Nottingham Air Crash - Nuthall Road

Recommended Posts

Is anyone able to recall an RAF trainer (possibly and Master or Magister) that crashed in Nuthall Road near the junction with Western Boulevard somewhere around the mid 1940's? I believe one of the pilots may have been Polish.

I found the details on a website which, unfortunately, appears to have disappeared.

Just one report of the crash in the E.P. 10th June 1944.

NOTT'M PLANE CRASH
Crew Killed And Child Injured

Many people narrowly escaped injury when a training plane crashed in Nuthall-road, Whitemoor, Nottingham, yesterday,
missing a row of houses by the width of the road.

The plane came down in a steep dive and buried itself in the pavement as far as the cockpit. There was a small explosion and the rest of the machine disintegrated, pieces being scattered over the roofs and gardens of surrounding houses.

The occupants were instantly killed.

A girl of 6, Evelyn Atkin, of 24, Raydon-drive, was standing a few yards away. She was hit by some pieces, and was taken to hospital by American military police.

RESCUE IMPOSSIBLE.
An R.A.F. officer, who stood near the junction of Whitemoor-road and Nuthall-road, said the machine came down full bore, with the engine on.

Ernest Ball, of 59, Ambleside-road, who was working in the garden of Mr. F. Stanley's house, 157, Nuthallroad, said that a few seconds after the crash there was a small explosion, and the rear part of the machine simply disappeared.

He and Mr. Stanley started to run across the road to try to extricate the occupants, but the R.A.F. officer told them that it was useless.

Miss Bloodworth, of 155, Nuthall road, had a narrow escape. One of the pieces of flying debris struck her on the wrist, and another piece smashed
a panel in the front door behind her.

It's possible that Evelyn Atkin is still around. Age 6 in 1944 would make her mid-80s now.

We were living at 210 Nuthall Road during the time. Having looked at the impact site (on Google Earth) outside 155 Nuthall Road there appears a slight depression in the road surface with surface cracks in the tarmacadam. Could the impact site still be evident with subsidence following the reinstatement of the impact ares all those years ago?

I know that this is a bus lane but the surrounding road surface appears free of surface cracks and minor depressions.
