bamber 128
Who can give me the name of the well known Nottingham company that used to put an advert in the Evening Post just before each and every Christmas? It would list all their employees and how long they'd been working for the company: Alf (38 years), Terry (29 years) ... They would also ask their customers not ring/visit on Christmas or Boxing Day but that they would back to work on the 27th. I ask because I visited them this morning and , as usual, the service was top notch.
rob237 89
...Midland Magneto... Cheers Robt P.
bamber 128
I used to love that advert in the clasified section of the EP - it confirmed that it really was Christmas. Midland Mag rank alongside Reliance Electricals as great examples good old fashioned customer oriented companies. Any more suggestions for great companies to be a customer of? Beefsteak 305
The company you speak of used to do a lot of the electrical work for a firm I worked for years ago, I am suprised that in this day and age of fast everything (Food, Tyres etc) that they have still survived .Just goes to show what proper customer relations can do.Are they still on Canal street/Castle Boulevarde?) I can never remember which is which)

Certainly so...a magnificent reputation. Specializing in a potentially contentious area too! The next complaint I hear about them will be the first... Cheers Robt P. bamber 128
No, they moved to Traffic Street a few years ago. Reversing off their Canal Street forcourt (well bit of pavement) was one thing I always did with trepidation. Ooh er. I 've just found this http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:H7ZGd...lient=firefox-a

bamber 128
I guess they must be victims of: i) the increasing complexity of engine electronics and the need to have specialist diagnostics ii) the death of the British car industry with its cr*p electrics. The Japs and the Germans make cars that are generally reliable iii) the decline in after-market add-ons such as alarms now that security is built into the basic design of new vehicles
mick2me 3,033
I cant see why they should fold, they should have found a niche with battery sales alone. They refurbed my 1974 Morris Marina (1.8) Pre engaging starter motor. It came back like new. When I worked at the Co-op on Meadow Lane, a big old guy used to come down and work on the Milk Floats and Chargers. I think his van might also have been electric? Another company I remember is an electric motor Rewind company on Park Road at Lenton. Can't remember the name?
Limey 242
The air filters I buy here for my 74 MGB are made in Nottingham - could it be the same company?

Beefsteak 305
Glaisedale drive is in Beechdale or Bilborough not far from the Harvey Haddon stadium The filter people is something like C.M. filters ,like I said before green and white boxes and they also make oil filters

Limey 242
Yep - green and white boxes. You guys are good! I do remember driving past Midland Mag, many times! Seems to me there were a lot of auto related businesses in that area. Wasn't there a motorcycle dealer around there too? Also down on Arkwright Street was the Vespa dealer - who got a lot of the money I earned riding the order bike at the Co-Op! Wow - just looked at a map and Arkwright Street is but a dim memory of what it used to be!

Frank 13
It was Crossland Filters on Glaisdale Drive but they are closed now I believe.
Beefsteak 305
Thats it Crosslands. I knew there was a 'C' involved somewhere
Terry Sadler 27
Nope Definately Lenton, 'Something Rewinds'? Wasn't it ARCO Rewinds? I think it was a Birmingham based company with workshops all over the midlands. I recall that they did a lot of electric motor refurbishment for the N.C.B
Ayupmeducks 1,730
J. Jones and Wilson Ford were the Nottingham companies who did most of the NCB's work locally. ARCO only had a small workshop down Beeston on the main road just a little past Beeston Boilers turn off. Crap company, very low standards in workmanship. They weren't authorised to repair flameproof equipment. I worked for Arco just before I got a job with Wilson Ford, only stayed with ARCO a few weeks, poor company to work for too. J.Jones was the premier rewind company, pioneered epoxy sealing of motor windings and pre coil forming so as the Coal Board could use semi skilled labour in winding motors at Bestwood workshops. J.Jones was at the bottom of Daleside Road, and Wilson Ford on Parkside Road Basford.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
I forgot, there was another small rewind company, Ranby and Keys of Commerce Square opposite St Mary's Church.
Ashley 288
think theres still a rewind company at lenton, near pub that used to be 17/21st Lancer or whatever castle blvd / abbey bridge island, is that park rd ?
Ayupmeducks 1,730
I never knew of one in Lenton, Park Lane is in Basford, Wilson Ford are still listed at the Park Lane Works in the Yellow Pages It runs roughly from Radford Road to Hucknall Road.

Arco Ltd - Nottingham PO Box 3 Glaisdale Drive West
rob237 89
Arco Rewinds...as Terry Sadler inferred. Long established company...certainly operational in the 50's. Cheers Robt P.
