HI MARZIPAN

JUST LEFT YOU A THREAD ON CHANDOS BOYS SCHOOL YES THERE WERE A FEW PATS ABOUT WITH THE CARLTON ROCKERS PAT LIMB BEING ONE OF THEM. IS THE MICK FEZZ IS THINKING OF MICK FISHER ALSO A ROCKER MARRIED JANET THRAVES THEY ARE STILL TOGETHER LIVE ON CONINGWORTH RD CARLTON THERE WAS ALSO NOBBY AND LEON WHO ALSO PALLED ABOUT WITH CHARLIE AND ALL WENT IN THE CARLTON REGULARLY. ANOTHER PLACE THAT WAS A GREAT PLACE FOR ROCKERS AT THE TIME BUT NOT ONE I DID NOT GO IN TOO OFTEN AS TOO MANY PEOPLE IN HERE KNEW MY FAMILY AND WOULD GRASS ME UP IF I PUT A FOOT WRONG. MY ELDER BROTHER WHO CAME ACROSS AS ALL NICEY NICEY ON THE OUTSIDE WAS ALWAYS A REAL BULLY TO ME AND WOULD OFTEN HIT ME IF HE SAW ME DOING THING HE THOUGH I SHOULD NOT DO OR I GOT IN LATE UNTILL I LEARNED TO STAND UP TO HIM AND WAS NO LONGER SCARED OF HIM BUT I AS IN MY LATE TEENS BEFORE THIS HAPPEND. BUT KNEW A LOT OF THE CROWD FROM WHITEHART LENTON WERE I USED TO GO ON A REGULAR BASIS 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK AND STILL GOING IN THERE KNOW REGULAR BIKERS NIGHT ON A THURSDAY NIGHT HENCE SEEING LESLEY LAST NIGHT..

AS I SAID IN MY EARLIER POST I WOULD ADD SOME OF MY MEMORIES OF MY CHILDHOOD IN NETHERFIELD AND TRENT PONDS SO MANY MEMORIES WERE DO I START AND NOT BORE YOU ALL TO DEATH AS I COULD GO ON AND ON AND DONT ALWAYS KNOW WHEN TO STOP.

WELL I DONT THINK THERE WAS EVER A TIME WHEN WE DID NOT GO DOWN TRENT FIELDS FIRST WITH MUM AND DAD THEN LATER DAD WOULD TAKE US WHEN HE WENT FISHING USUALLY NEAR THE VIDUCT BRIDGE . ON TRENT CONCRETE MAGGOTT FARM SIDE THERE USED TO BE A BIG SANDY BAY WERE WE USED TO PADDLE AND BUILD SAND CASTLES WHILE DAD FISHED SAME AGAIN ON RADCLIFF BEND WERE THE CARRAVAN PARK WAS ON THE OPPOSIT SIDE THESE BEUTIFUL BAYS HAVE LONG GON WHEN THEY REENFORCED ALLTHE BANKS WITH ROCKS IN WIRE CAGES .PARTLY TO STOP EROSION BUT PARTLY TO DISCOURAGE PEOPLE FROM SWIMMING IN THE RIVER. RADCLIFF BEND WAS WERE I FIRST LEARNED TO SWIM WITH MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND OF COURSE OUR BEUTIFUL BIG BLACK NEWFOUNDLAND DOG BLACKIE ,HE WOULD SWIMM BESIDE YOU AND IF YOU GOT INTO TROUBLE YOU WOULD JUST GRAB ONTO HIS COLLAR AND HE WOULD TAKE YOU

TO THE NEAREST BANK AND PULL YOU ONTO THE SAND AND HE KNEW YOUR WERE OK.

LATER AS WE GOT A LITTLE OLDER WE WOULD BE ALLOWWED TO GO WITH OLDER BROTHER AND SISTERS AND BY THE TIME I WAS ABOUT EIGHT I WOULD BE DOWN THERE WITH MY OWN FRIENDS OR EVEN GO FOR A LONG WALK ON MY OWN. NEVER WAS FRIEGHTEND DOWN THERE ON MY OWN. USED TO LOVE WALKING UP THE PATH THAT USED TO COME OUT ON EMERIES RD OFTEN YOU WOULD NOT MEET ANYONE ON THIS PATH SO WAS GOOD FOR WATCHING THE WILD LIFE KNEW WERE SEVERAL RABITT WARENS AND BADGER AND FOX DENS WERE ON THAT PATH. THINK THIS IS NOW PART OF THE OFFICIAL LAGOONS WALK NOW IS BUT HAVE NOT BEEN DOWN FOR ABOUT TWENTY YEARS.

BUT I THINK MY FAVORITE MEMORIES COME FROM THE BIT IN THE FIELD WERE THE BIG POND WITH THE ISLAND WAS A LITTLE STREAM ALSO RAN HERE WITH A LITTLE FOOT BRIGE OVE THIS PART OF THE OUSE DYKE AT THE SIDE OF THIS WAS A LOVELY GRASS BANK WITH A NICE FLAT BIT AT THERE BOTTOM WERE WE WOULD HAVE OUR PICNICS AND FISH FOR TIDLERS AND NEWTS AND TADPOLES FROGSPAWN.

I WILL LEAVE IT THERE FOR A WHITE AND MAYBE COME BACK TO THIS A BIT LATER IF PEOPLE WANT ME TOO.

Slightly off topic, but since Babs mentioned Trent Fields, to us on the south bank Trent Fields was the area between what is now Lady Bay Bridge and the then gavel pits, now the Water Sports Centre.

In the late 50s we would go down there trying to hit hares with sling shots, and later chasing them on old bikes. girder forked Ariels and Nortons etc. It was good practice for dodging cars and pedestrians when we got to 16 and could get a license.

On Sundays in Summer lots of Lady Bay folk would hear the speed boats racing and would go down Trent Fields to watch. The boats would come within inches of the large rocks which strengthened the banks.

Cattle grazed the fields then and their cow pats attracted lots of insects, these in turn fed the skylarks.

Pinders Pond hosted reed buntings, yellow wagtails, sedge and reed warblers, I went down there a few years ago and all the old wildlife was missing. I put that down to the farm closing.

Myself, Howard Stuckey, Keith Saunders and John King were the sling shotters, the bikers included Vic Moore, Dave Coburn, Bob Amphlett, Bob Foster, Baron, Tony Whiteman Bob Simkins and others.

Lady Bay had aot of Bikers in those days.

Are there any of you out there?

Well, we were bikers too! but a different kind. Push bikes.

Built my own back in 1960 and joined the Sherwood Cycling club. I think they are still going. At that time they met in a building at the side of the Chesterfield Arms in Gedling. Also very handy for getting re-fills on club nights. At that time we used to do time trials from Lowdham up the bypass to Oxton and beyond. It was supposed to be ten miles. Seemed more like a 100 sometimes. Sunday club runs were out to Kinoulton and other villages. Sometimes into Derbyshire. You really knew when you'd been riding up there.

Great days. Wonder if any of the old guys are on this site?

Maybe I should just start a knew thread for that. Thoughts?

WELL HERE A LITTLE MORE ABOUT LIFE IN NETHERFIELD AND I THINK I WILL START TODAY FROM THE BEGINING WERE I LIVED AND WAS BROUGHT UP FOR THE FIRST 12 YEARS OF MY LIVE THEY SAY THAT THE FIRST EIGHT YEARS YOU LEARN MORE THAN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

THE PLACE 14 ETHEL GROVE OFF DEBIL ST NETHERFIELD THESE WERE THE FIRST HOUSES IN NETHERFIELD TO BE DEMOLISHED IN THE MID SIXTIES. THIS BLOCK OF 18 TERRACE HOUSES WAS AT THE TOP END OF DEBIL ST WALKING DOWN FROM VICTORIA RD.

ON THIS SITE NOW STANDS A BLOCK OF NEW HOUSES BEEN THERE ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW BEFORE THIS IT WAS A CAR PARK AND FROM BEING DEMOLISED TO BECOMEING A CARPARK IF WAS A SMALL PARK WITH FLOWERS AND SEATS.

THESE HOUSES WERE TWO UP TWO DOWN NO BATHROOMS AND TOILETS AND COAL HOUSES AT THE END OF THE YARD I SURPOSE THESE YARDS WERE ABOUT 10FT BY 10FT WITH A PATHE SERVING THE WHOLE SIDE OFTHE TERACE BEFORE YOU GOT TO THE TIOLETS SMALL FENCES ABOUT 3FT HIGH BETWEEN THE YARDS SOME STILL HAD THE GATES OTHERS DID NOT AT THE FRONT WERE GARDENS ABOUT THE SAME SIZE AS THE YARDS MOST OF THESE HAD PRIVET HEDGESAGAIN SOME HAD GATES OTHERS DID NOT I KNOW WE HAD A GATE ON THE BACK BUT CARNT REMEMBER IF WE HAD ONE ON THE FRONT .

MY FAMILY

MUM DAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS I WAS NEXT TO YOUNGEST THE NEXT ONE UP FOR ME WAS KATH KP NUTS ON THIS SITE SHE IS 6 YEARS OLDER THAN ME AND MY BROTHER JOHN IS 2 YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME.

AND OF COURSE MUM ALWAYS LOOKED AFTER ROBERT RAVEN WHO ALTHOUGH HE LIVED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF DEBIL ST WAS LIKE AN EXTRA BROTHER TO US. ROBERT HAD DOWNS SYNDROME AND WAS TWO WEEKS OLDER THAN ME MUM LOOKED AFTER HIM EVERY WEEKDAY WHEN HIS MUM AND DAD WERE AT WORK. AS THERE WERE NO SPECIAL SCHOOLS IN THOSE DAYS AND ROBERT LIKE MANY DOWNS AND DISABLED CHILDREN IN THOSE DAYS WAY NOT CONCIDERED ABLE TO ATTENED SCHOOL ROBERT STAYED ALL DAY WITH MY MUM AND SHE TOUGHT HIM TO READ A LITTLE FROM OUR BOOKS HE USED TO LIKE COMICS . THIS WAS WITHOUT ALL OUR OTHER FRIENDS AND NIGHBOURS IN AND OUT OF THE HOUSE BACK DOOR NEVER LOCKED AND VERY FEW PEOPLE WOULD KNOCK JUST COME IN AND SHOUT ANYBODY THERE MUM WAS USUALLY IN THE BACK KITCHEN SMALL ROOM WITH A BIG BLACK RANGE COPPER BOILER IN THE CORNER. ON THE SIDE OF THE RANGE WAS A GAS COOKER BUT MUM USED THE RANGE MORE THAN THIS TO COOK IN,AND ON ALWAYS A BIG BLACK KETTLE ON TOP OF THE RANGE.SINK INFRONT OF THE WINSI BIG BELFAST SINK BUT ONLY COLD WATER NO HOT THIS CAME FROM THE KETTLE OR THE COPPER THE WASHING WAS ALSO DONE IN THIS AND THE DOLLY TUB AND PONCH KEPT OUTSIDE DONE OUTSIDE IN THE SUMMER BUT BROUGHT IN WHEN COLD AND WET.NEXT TO THE SINK WAS THE BACK DOOR AT THE SIDE OT THAT THE DOOR TO THE STAIRS WITH A PANTRY UNDER THESE. THE ONLY OTHER THING WAS A BIG KITCHEN TABLE AND SIX CHAIRS USED FOR ALL KINDS OF THINGS COOKING BAKING EATING ON AS WELL AS PAINTING DRAWING PLAYING GAMES CARD NIGHTS AND THE ODD BAR ON PARTY NIGHTS.

SO OUR HOUSE COULD BE A BIT OF A MAD HOUSE AT TIMES IF WE WERE ALL IN ESPECIALLY WHEN COLD AND WETAND WE COULD NOT GO OUTSIDE TO PLAY HENCE WHY WE OFTEN GOT FIRES UPSTAIRS IN THE BEDROOMS BUT WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES AS DAD WORKED ALL HIS LIFE DOWN THE PIT SO WE ALWAYS HAD PLENTY OF COAL TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS.KNOW OF PLENTY WHO HAD TO GO AND PLAY IN BED ROOMS WITH OUT ANY HEATING TO KEEP THEM WARM.

Well Bab's!

I think you are really good! Good deal would for you to write a book! Sure!!!

I think it's just amazing, and as I already said, I can just read and read all your stories without getting bored! :)

Stephen said to me, that all of this was up to now, like ghost dancing in his head...and everything just woke up!!...I just told him to keep in the memory his experience, it's part of life...good or bad...but made him what he is now! :)

Well, looking forward to further story! :)
