saturday afternoon telly

Recommended Posts

IIRC, wrestling was exclusively ITV (Kent Walton etc) and Rugby League was ditto BBC (Eddie Waring).

Scrambling was Sunday lunchtime ITV territory "(Arthur Lampkin leading...")

Certainly a much wider variety of sports were seen than on today's terrestrial channels.

Wouldn't Saturday ITV wrestling be followed by the Dickie Davies led football updates/results?

Cheers

It definately was the Final Score, with the much copied by football supporters everywhere ,music , that went

duh duh duhduhduh duhduhduh DUH DUH

With the typewriter /teleprinter clicking away in the background. And ofcource the Malham streaked Dickie Davies (Frank Bough/ David Coleman on the BBC )

I concur with Rob,,,, we used to get 65 mins of wrestling,,,, then in the latter years we only got 45 mins - 4:00 to 4:45 when it was “shh – the pools are on,,,,".

We also had an hour on Wednesday nights for a while,,,,, that dwindled to 30 mins of what they called "highlights" - load of c************ & finished altogether after a while.

Kent Walton was rumoured to have one of the biggest & best porno collections at the time,,,,,, I did hear other stories too,,,, but maybe not for here,,,,,,,,

Was anyone at Vic Baths when Billy Two Rivers almost broke his back ? He was out of action for about a year after that - cancelling all engagements.

I acted as 'second' down here in the 70's,,,, our local 'timekeeper' didn't keep time ! He was so engrossed in the spectacle that a round could last anything from a minute to ten ! Caused havoc with the script !

I was the barman at the hotel where the lads stayed also, so got to know a lot of 'em well.

anyway, after the 'results' was the start of Saturday Teatime viewing,,,, which was the gateway to the evenings *** Spectaculars***

We used to love the wrestling in our house ,as it always finished with a play fight with my dad ,(Me and big sis v my dad ) whilst mum made Ham off the Bone and onion cobs for tea . Sometimes we would have a crab , which my dad 'cleaned' expertly, and placed on a plate the way a top restaurant would do.

AHH memories

Dr Who started in 1963, the first ever episode was unfortunately broadcast on the saturday after Kennedy's assasination, it had to be repeated the week after because the BBC felt that most viewers were too upset to watch it.

It must have been Grandstand, The News, Telegoons? Dr Who. Of course later in the evening it was the inevitable Billy Cotton Band Show.

Lets not forget 'The 6 5 Special', Juke Box Jury, Thank Your Lucky Stars, usually on when we were having tea, when the old man had come back from watching County.

On Battle of Britain Day, ITV used to have live coverage of an airshow on a saturday afternoon, which I gather was shown at appropriate moments between wrestling bouts.

My wife’s old man would spend the whole time while the wrestling was on perched on the end of his armchair living every throw and blow, woo betide anyone who spoke to him, then as you say “quiet the pools check. Then after that it was ether ham and tomoto cobs or cheese and onion cobs…. later it would be to the club in Arnold.
