  1. Similarly I bought @RadFordee a Gucci copy in Ensenada Mexico over 30 years ago which still runs. $8 as I recall
  2. In 1975, aged 13, my best mate bought one of the first digital watches for the Kings ransom of £30. It was the Sinclair Black Watch, which appeared to be completely black, no numbers or other detail visible, but when the case was pressed the red LED numbers appeared. Everyone wanted to have a go pressing the case in different places to activate the two different displays, hours & minutes or minutes & seconds. After a week or so of being constantly badgered to show it he got really peeved to the point where he flat out refused everyone. As I understand it now they really were rubbish w
  3. Dirty old town... Written by Ewan MaColl, and made famous by the Dubliners, about Salford summing up the soot and grime from the mills and the dirty canals
  4. Low Bell End Farm http://Low Bell End Farm, 3 Bell End Grn, Rosedale Abbey, Pickering YO18 8RE
  5. We used to call the one opposite The Greyhound the greasy Greek's and if I remember correctly it was the first chippy in Arnold to serve saveloy The one opposite Wood St. was Eat Out, it had a green sign with yellow writing and again if I remember correctly it was the first to serve in polystyrene trays. We always went to Hatter's and if we had pie and gravy we used to take a bowl and they'd put paper over the top with an elastic band round it
  6. @CompoJust been reading your old posts about Arnold. To me Hatter's was always the best chippy in Arnold and as a small kid I was always desperate to see over the high counter. I used to try to pull myself up enough to be able to get a good look but could never manage. I remember what an experience it was to sit upstairs, the dumb waiter that the plates of chips would come up on and how steep and noisy the stairs seemed. Can't remember the names of the owners but I recall he was always quite dapper and the lady always seemed quite glamorous to me!
  7. @DJ360 Two great articles, thank you. I know many of those named but didn't understand the sheer depth and breadth of their contribution to Motown's phenomenal success
  8. Being cheeky and brave (and daft as well) in my last year at Kingswell Juniors, if the bus going down Gedling Road was slow enough, we used to try to hop on the back and ride it to the bottom where it stopped at the crossroads with Brookfield Rd & Hallams Lane. God help us if the conductor caught us, we were off with a thick ear....
  9. On the A166, on the way to Bridlington is a very picturesque village, small place with a green and pond, which looks lovely. Unfortunately the name of the village is Wetwang which sounds like an affliction of your nether regions!! Anyone know of anywhere else similar?
  10. Hey @Beekay I'd forgotten all about him rolling the coins up but as soon as I read your post it came back to me like a flash
  11. I'm sorry @mary1947 unlike @Beekay I'm not quite old enough to remember pennies and tanners for the meter only being born in 1962. For me it was shillings and two bob
  12. Can you imagine gas men nowadays walking up the street in uniform with their cap on, leather bag across their shoulder bulging with their collectin's.........Then some hoodie wearing youths would pounce and have it away with the lot on mopeds!!
  13. When the gas or electric man used to come round me mam would always put newspaper on the table for them to count the two bobs and shillings out on to, I can still see the stacks of coins now. When he'd read the meter and took the money they'd hand what was left to me mam. I used to think they were giving her free money in the same way as when she got change in the shop!
  14. Similar sort of plan for the Harriers, when we had them that is, in the event of war. They would disperse from airfields and use bridges over the motorways as hides and the road as runways, moving frequently to avoid detection
  15. Billy Connolly tells a fantastic joke about his mam putting a heavy overcoat on the bed in winter but calling it an eiderdown whenever they had visitors. I can't stop crying with laughter every time I hear it because that's exactly what my dad did putting a coat on my bed!!
  16. Hi @DJ360 I've seen from a couple of your posts you live near St. Helens. My father was from Sutton and my Auntie Mary still lives there. When he was alive, even though he hadn't lived there for over thirty years, he still referred to it as going up home when we visited. I still remember being out on the streets with my cousins and their friends laughing every time I said anything because I "talked funny"
  17. Unfortunately Britain's motorway network was conceived in the 1950s based upon a volume of traffic and vehicle design that was already out of date when the first section, the Preston by-pass later M6, opened in 1958. The problems built in to the expanding motorway network by this flawed planning were further compounded by the Beeching report when 4000 miles of rail routes were lost forcing more traffic on to the roads. Subsequent decisions to prioritise passenger travel on the railways rather than freight also led to further congestion. In a nutshell our road system is hopelessly out of
  18. Can't go far wrong with Bosch or Makita in my experience, both solid dependable tools. Like @Oztalgian I also had a small Karcher hoover and recognise everything you've said about it When it finally gave up the ghost I bought a Titan hoover from Screwfix and have been impressed with it. Only niggle for me is the dust bags tend to split when they start to fill up covering the filter in cack
  19. The track paralleled Cross Street for a 100 yards or so coming out on Cherry Close. I used to walk along there most days to Redhill school with my mate Stef who's parents were the steward and stewardess at the Labour Club
  20. @mary1947 Thanks for your reply but it was my dad who knew The Wheatsheaf and the landlord well through his job as a managed house stocktaker for Home Brewery. I went to school in Arnold
