  1. HI Chrissie, how's it going? Yes, I remembered you like the Alley Cafe. One of those little Nottingham 'Best kept secrets'.
  2. There's also Cannon Court of course, situated between Hurts Yard and the West End Arcade (apologies if already mentioned on this thread though I don't think it's relevant to the thread question). The pleasant Alley Cafe is tucked quietly away up there.

    Why ?

Yes, doesn't sound like 'upspeak' in the least (which I agree is somewhat irritating). Begs the old questions, Loppy... Q: 'How do you spell Canada?' Q: :C eh N eh D eh' etc.

    And a Notts fan.

Agree, Gibbo. He was the one to stick to and let him grow with the club I felt. Notts fans don't seem to agree generally I notice. He has his faults like everyone else but I felt he had integrity, was a good guy with some ability and potential and should have been given time. Slightly starved of funds - unlike the last manager - it would have been interesting to see what might have happened if they had persevered with him.
  6. It's got some nice features, yes, not as fancy as some with the cherubs etc. Built in 1853, former Institute for the Blind. The plumbing is showing its age mind!
  7. #24 Sure is if you mean this one? I spy it from my desk every day. Lots of characterful T C Hine buildings on Clarendon Street, a very nice part of town I think.
  8. No indeed! It's funny you should say that - it's the road I work on (not Carnaby Street!)
  9. Gotta have the right tie with it, mate. I think Steeples has been talked about on here before, especially as a supplier of school uniforms. I got took there as a kid by mum and came out looking like Stevie Marriot though!
  10. Something like the below, Ian? Didn't know there were branches in town, thought it was a Daybrook business, obviously not! Recall being bought my first 'cool' clothing at Steeples.
  11. I hadn't realised that Steeples were in town too. The one I remember was in Daybrook Square.
  12. The same to you, Michael, Happy New Year when it comes. I'm happy to hear that your wife is doing so well, that's great news indeed. I'd like to send Happy New Year wishes to all and to those who celebrate, have a great time tonight .
  13. Cuba looks interesting. Was it a restaurant offering Brazilian food previously? I was actually quite sorry when The Hard Rock Cafe closed on that spot. used to enjoy a pint and a glance round the memorabilia in there.

#12 Iain McCulloch was a terrific player for Notts County, a great finisher from any angle, dogged, wily and pacy. He could put it about a bit too! I attended the Anglo-Scottish tie against Kilmarnock when he played against Notts. Jimmy obviously could spot a player. http://killiefc.com/DoYouRemember/IainMcCulloch.htm
  15. Can't make it to Edinburgh this year but I will be celebrating in town right enough - oh yes!
  16. That sounds like the Nelly! You'd have to go some to get banned from there.
  17. #192 I think they should have renamed it as the Lord Nelson, Lizzie. Everyone in Arnold would know where that was! Think another 'Organ Grinder' would have been preferable, Coffee Grinder seems to give off the wrong message to me. Faither was a regular in the 'Nelly' - I'm really not sure what he would have said about all this!

Seems to me like many of the candidates are much of a muchness. It's not rich pickings but there'll never be a shortage of candidates - just those of real quality or promise. Notts need to 'get lucky' with up and coming guy. Personally and I don't expect too many to agree, I'd have gone for Nigel Clough whilst he was still available.
  19. A few weeks ago the former Lord Nelson on Front Street, Arnold reopened after being closed for a period. It's last incarnation was as a daytime coffee bar with the 'Nelly' having closed some years ago. It's now been christened 'The Coffee Grinder' (rubbish name I think) and is owned by the Blue Monkey Brewery. During the day it serves largely as a coffee bar I understand and in the evening a real ale pub. It's pretty close to the Robin Hood and Little John so a couple of real ale choices in close proximity for punters in Arnold now.

I think stability is not a word that could have been used at Meadow Lane in a very long time, mate. They should put a revolving door on the manager's office in that stadium. Point of fact, both city clubs have an abysmal record in this respect over the past few years. I really don't understand some of Ray Trew's managerial appointments, Keith Curle, Chris Kiowmya? Ricardo Moniz may have good coaching experience but he seemed a square peg in a round hole in this job. Probably many won't agree but I liked Shaun Derry. He had his faults but I thought he was a good 'fit' for Notts in many ways.

I'm not terribly surprised to read this. Chairman Trew has a trigger-happy reputation and Moniz has not covered himself in glory, nor engendered much confidence in his time at Meadow Lane He's signed around 20 players (?) on a top-end budget for a League Two club and clearly has found it difficult to get those players to perform well together. He has made some classic errors, particularly with changing the team wholesale and playing decent players out of position. Ultimately, as Brian Clough would have mischievously offered, the Chairman should look at himself. He has made some truly poor ap
  22. It's well worth a visit. Owned by Everards/Lincoln Green Breweries, it's focused on real ales and a wide range of ciders. The pub is ancient - probably the oldest pub in a town of some quite old pubs. I thought the old place was dead and buried after some hard times but like a phoenix, it has come back to life - hooray!
  23. Absolutely, see you at the next get-together!
