  1. I remember this girl so well as I used to catch the bus on Long Row where her newspaper pitch was outside the pipe shop. She was a lovely girl and extremely well spoken, quite posh in fact. "Post...late extrarr". Before that time I remember her pavement art. I also remember that bearded guy and am sorry to hear that sad story. What a lowlife.
  2. Agree with the general concencus here. The New Welbeck was pretty well opposite Pierre Victiore restaurant (or whatever it's called now). Swing saloon style doors and a few steps down to the bar. Not particuarly well patronised as I recall. I do remember it as a Berni too. The Milton's head had upstairs and downstairs bars. Downstairs could get pretty busy on a weekend upstairs considerable less so. It was a home Ales bar and latterly some of the clientel left a little to be desired. The Prince Albert was one of the first pubs I ever went into. It got very tired after initially being really
  3. Yep, I was quite a regular at The Thurland Hall at that time. It was very typical of some of the best things about town pubs at that time in that it was used by all ages groups and types of people. A shame that seems to be a thing of the past largely these day. Nowadays it has to be a student pub, a trendy bar or whatever. Old fashioned pubs with their mix of folks were much more interesting in my view. They tended to be self-policing as well. Doing that route I'd normally call in at the Lion, The Fying Horse and The George amongst others.
  4. That place was then called The Sherwood Rooms. Used to have a few gigs on in those days. Rod Stewart and the Faces appeared there!
  5. How nice to see a picture of Mary from the George Hotel! That face is so familiar to me I had thought it was an actress at first. In the late seventies/early eighties I was a regular in the The George. I'd agree with the fact that she didn;t take any nonsense. She was very pleasant when you got to know her a little and she got to know you though. I remember one night being in the George and there had been a bit of a rough football crowd in there. I'd gone to pay a call and apparently a gang of these lads had started verbally picking on the girl I was in there with, her neding up in tears. Ma
  6. Hello there, Eric! Oh yes I know Lodge Farm Lane, I'm just half a mile down the road quite near the cemetary. When did you leave the area?
  7. Yes it was definitely held on The Croft which for those that don't know Arnold is where the health centre and car park between Front Street and High Street stands. I stand to be corrected on this but I seem to remember it being held one year on the land behind the Flying Horse pub nearby on High Street too. On memory, Arnold Wakes would have ended around 1965-ish with the health centre being built shortly afterwards. There is now a fair on the recreation ground on Coppice road in Killisick.
  8. I've always loved that shop! Any visitor to the area who I know is into music I take them there. There's nothing quite like it. I chatted to Rob a a few months back when I was in there, it was a Saturday and he had three gigs that night - the final one an all-nighter. You can take it that he is still very much involved in the scene!
  9. Hello, just thought I'd introduce myself in here. I live in Redhill, Nottingham and have a keen interest in all things Nottingham, particularly history and sports. I'm not originally from Nottingham but have spent the majority of my life here. Just caught this excellent site whilst browsing around and am looking forward to a natter and just generally reminiscing about the area. Stu
  10. That nightclub was called 'Annabelle's', Mick. Right next to and downstairs from the pub on Victoria Street which just escapes my memory right now. You'd think I could remember the name, I spent enough time in there!
  11. I do vaguely remember this. I'm pretty sure that local band Gaffa were one of the bands appearing. Certainly the song First Teenager on the Moon was one of their well-know numbers. It used the Fireball XL5 theme as part of the tune! IIRC Gaffa appeared on a TV music programe one midweek early evening and played the song as one of their two allotted. Anybody use to see Gaffa at The Imperial Cooler Bar like I did? Happy days.
