  1. Had a conversation a couple of years ago with a lady in old traditional sweetshop in southwell and although she stocks some old favourites that I remember as a child (white mice, chocolate daggers etc) that they weren't the same ingredients????
  2. Absolutely loved caramac and would you believe it in our local choitrams (supermkt) they have it!!!!!! and yes it is really sweet!
  3. Radford red..... quite a lot of my books make for a 'depressing read' as told me by OH... praps you might like these Journey to hell - Donald macneil (inside the worlds most violent prison) Welcome to hell - Colin Martin (bangkok Hilton) Both good
  4. Actually yes, Frank.... I do have very few fiction books but one book I have that is very large and read twice to date is stephen kings The Stand, absolutely love this book, I think that although it is clearly fiction I could imagine it happening. The other King books that i have read is IT and Misery - both really good.
  5. With regard to 'bad' performances and those who clearly can't sing/dance or whatever...... any spotlight is good for these people..... I think, rather like x factors 'bad' performers that were brought back on for finale show that these people don't care what they have their 2 minutes of fame for as long as they have had it ... and lets face it so many people have done it in recent years and still doing it, Jordon, kerry kat., jade goody, all the pilocks off celebrity big brother etc etc.
  6. As the title says, presently I am reading for the 3rd time (love books so had most shipped out) is called The Long Walk. It is about a polish officer who in 1939 (war) was sent to the russian 'gulags'(war /death camps) and his escape. I believe after the war he resided near nottingham? I also read that it was fabricated? How true I don't know but love it just the same. Anyone read it? Views? Any opinion/reccomendations on any other books (not keen on reading fiction)
  7. Ibought his autobigraphy a few years ago and although I love autobigraphys normally his was awful. I have never read about anyone who is so conceited. He bleats on about Sinitta.... I mean come on, she was a one hit wonder and even that was crap in my opinion. He got where he is today through luck and where he grew up and who he mixed with (family home right near studios). Obnoxious man who I cannot abide
  8. Precisely why Susan will probably win - cos she is the underdog
  9. Sadly only get to watch it myself through youtube..... sadly I say? You hear about it everywhere which makes you watch it cos you think you're missing out otherwise. Its nothing new really though is it ? Remember opportunity knocks, new faces etc? Some of those were pretty dire as well were'nt they. I thought Susans first audition was good, however the last one singing 'memories' was not that great.... but I reckon she'll win it with all the hype she has had!
  10. Stan, you never replied to my question on modbury, adelaide (lived there in 68)

  13. Thankyou to the above posters...... without going into too much detail, we had little choice. Life is what you make it and to be honest as much as I miss certain aspects of the uk, I have been really happy here. Yes it does have its downsides (like everywhere) but I can go anywhere at any time of day and night and be safe in the knowledge that no one is going to attack/mug me. (before anyone brings any cases recently to light, these ARE isolated) My daughter will get a fantastic education with a understanding of different cultures and values, and no not necessarily muslims - australians, amer
  14. I clicked on the highlighted red - pictures and cannot be accessed here
  15. Bu***r me, my internet provider won't allow access to "flicker' Stupid as I'm sure your pictures aren't xrated?????
  16. Yes we all have families that had done their time during the wars..... We can't all get excited about the same thing! I think you are focusing too much on my 'arab home' MATE!
  17. Praps I need to go to a show - if only for the beer tent lol.
  18. OOOOOh..... are we getting all bitter and twisted???? Here for one thing and one thing only and no it isn't the desert...... WORK! I wasn't saying that there was anything wrong in your chosen pastime.... just cannot see the fascination????? a little like train spotting?????
  19. Forgive me but WHAT is the fascination of watching planes?????? The only time I like them is on one to somewhere nice and even that is boring....... Now being in a helicopter is good as you actually feel like you are in the air.... but watching one? No I don't think so... Praps beefsteaks wife is being 'a good wife' for his sake?????
  20. [Thanks Terry, yes I think that that house was the one... I say 'think' as it was30 odd years ago! I looked at it through google street view and it looks like it has had an extension, which I'm sure wasn't there when old family friends had it. To be honest the old 'garages' at the side I remember more! Wonder if its still haunted???
  21. I remember my gran shopping for food everyday as in very early part of my life she only had a cold slab in the cellar. She would shop at greengrocers for veg, bakers for bread etc..... and knew all shop keepers. My grandad used to take me to old central market every saturday.... vaguely remember this as very young. This has all changed since the onslaught of the supermarkets......One of the reasons I think is, a lot of women/housewives have cars now and want to go to one shop, park up and load the weeks shop in.... think we are all guilty of that these days. My mum, who is now a pensioner can
  22. You were posh weren't you????? Gordon scott in broadmarsh was still there 2 years ago, however it has been took over by someone else who kept the name!! They did nice shoes for adults when I last went in.... good brands like gabor (yes, I know German).
  23. Re. shops on the dales..... my grandfather (amongst many other shops) had a shop on the corner of I think Lyndhusrt road. This was a general grocers and according to my uncle was a big mistake as he lost money as he couldn't buy stuff cheaper than what the first 'supermarkets' were doing. Not sure what time frame this was without speaking to my uncle (some time in 50s I imagine) I have looked for it on google street view but the property looks like a house now so they must have filled in shop windows...... quite sure it was opposite school?
  24. Who mentioned 'slums'? I was taking about the quality/look of the buildings in st annes!!!!
  25. Didn't know that beefsteak.... what year was it filmed? What was the film about? God I hated that school.... judging by the performance on the league tables it has got much worse!
