  1. Things are getting bad, Hank Marvin has released some 1960's recordings, Lonnie Gonagain's son was murdering "World Cup Willie" last night on The One Show and Multi Millionaire Pauline O'Grady is again asking for your £2 so kids don't have to eat toast and sleep under old coats, think I'll emigrate
  2. Can anyone explain how to hire a van! maybe it's me? but can't make head or tail of the charges, fee's etc, All I want to do is drive to a yard/depot, park my car, pick up a van drive to destination, put motorbike in the back drive to my home drop bike off then take van back. All in same day.Simple? Not till you come to do it! before I find out the charges I have to give date of birth, grandparents names, whether I've had any infectious diseases, bank pin no. etc! Ok, I exaggerate a bit lol but how do they charge? so much a day + mileage etc or via fuel used etc? looks a right minefield to m
  3. According to The Ring magazine approx 2000 professional boxers have died as a direct result of a loss in a specific bout since Queensberry Rules were introduced in 1884 with the worst year being 1953 when 22 died, many others have been maimed inc Michael Watson (confined to a wheelchair) and an opponent of Nigel Benn (total loss of sight)
  4. I well recall a pro boxer coming off far worse in a local pub fight, (glassed)
  5. Is the Ariel Mot'd? or old enough to not need one? lol
  6. Where is the tram stop on Alfreton Rd ? Until I saw that map I had never heard of Skottowe or Scottern but that area was well known as Scotholme and probably still is? I know there is a Scotholme Primary School but there used to be a large Victorian Girls School of the same name, a pub The Scotholme Hotel (building still there) and more than one factory or industrial yard etc called Scotholme Works, quite a few of the old victorian streets remain with the tram running through such but alot have been demolished. On that larger/clearer map part of New Basford can be seen, running from what
  7. The Locarno in earlier times was called The Victoria, iirc?
  8. It'll all be worth it, soon you'll be able to get the tram to clifton everyday, assuming you want to? and live near the route? When we get in power we'll stop that as too european
  9. Whilst not really Hyson Green it's interesting to note Forest Rd appears to just have run from North Sherwood St? with nothing to the east of Mansfield Rd there but Redcliffe Rd looks well established, The Mansfield Rd/Hucknall Rd fork is there, and Nottingham Rd. Would that be Noel St running "through" the words Hyson Green? with Berridge Rd joining it to Radford Rd?
  10. so was the de Havilland DH 106 Comet for awhile
  11. Not sure of exactly when she was referring to but recall my great aunt telling me when she and my grandmother having moved to Basford from a "posh" spa town Harrogate went looking for Hyson Green expecting some pleasant village setting and being most disappointed with the truth
  12. re the forest, a certain football team played there, in the late 1950's/early 60's (and of course before, but not sure how long after) the the banked steps of where the crowds stood were still there, not sure if they dated from horse racing days? anyway were very bumpy to go down on a sledge having started from virtually forest road
  13. Yes happy times, none of today's worries, cept of course for the luftwaffe flying over!
  14. Once had a homosexual say to me "it's the only way to be" my reply was "it's a good job your dad didn't think that"
  15. Can't recall exact year (early 1960's) or which St Ann's Well Rd Cinema it was (if in fact it was still a cinema?) but me and a mate went to see a wrestling bill there, only bout I remember was top of the bill Farmer Johnny Allen v some big blond "german", Hans or Heinz something or other, bearing in mind this was only 16 or so years after end of WW2 (like 1997/8 now) and St Ann's had suffered in our one night of the blitz with quite a few killed the fact he entered the ring wearing a peaked hat and swastika armband didn't go down well at all with the locals! Nor did his hitler salutes and sho
  16. Yes know what you mean lol, there was/is a beer off near top of Nrth Sherwood St with such, My lad went to the golden temple a few years ago
  17. You're right Stan 1958 it was, goes to show I was recalling (wrongly) from memory and not googling it lol, confusion or rather mistake made as my then best mate came with us, had forgotten despite us going to different schools after our 11 plus we remained mates, Can't really say I've noticed this unlimited immigration of eastern europeans, cept for a couple of cracking looking barmaids at my local, an MOT tester and a team of car wash guys, all Poles and and all very nice people, given the choice would sooner have those living next door to me than a great many "English" people I know, so
  18. Think the real race riots in Nottingham, the ones that made national newspapers were a few years earlier? they started/happened when I was on holiday at Mablethorpe with mam and dad 1956 or earlier as 56 was last year we went there
  19. Hi Cliff Ton have been looking on google map, this shows Barlock Rd then the reduced embankment to left (looking north ) of Rani Drive, next is the large warehouse & carpark then Fenton Rd and finally Heathfield Dive leading to Harmstone Rise. I have a section of a 26"? to the mile old map, this shows 2 lines that are approx double the width apart from normal going over Arnold Road on that "double bridge" The line of the left bridge section is "straight through" probably all the way from bagthorpe jcn points? the one on the right section however comes from 7 long sidings plus 2 head shu
  20. I'm not sure Cliff Ton? when I follow your link I am took further UP Arnold Rd? Memory defeats me for certain, it's over 15 years since I explored that area, but on the south side of the road the embankment of the GCR to GNR branch was far wider, originally carrying 6 or 7 lines, ( though only 2 crossed the bridge) and was still wide enough to later build the warehouse/factory c/w with massive car park on top of it wheras the GCR main line had only 2 lines, what's needed is a real life visit? Thinking about I cant find any photos of the bridges on Arnold Rd either?
  21. if you reverse the street view you'll see the remains of the embankment (south side of Arnold Rd) and that little road you see takes you up to a warehouse car park built on top of the embankment
  22. Thanks for that, Comparing the photo and the map side by side those carriages would be on the siding off the turntable line, and the signals above them for the bagthorpe curve joining the GNR? the trucks on the latter would be on a moving train and they hide the line to the rathole, To find such on street view go on Arnold Rd just past Barlock Rd, one of the embankments of the lines over the former can still be seen, both in real life and aerial view on google
  23. As promised in post 150 have found and uploaded to photobucket a picture of the turntable at Basford North/ Basford and Bulwell, only since I last used photobucket they have meddled with such and I can now no longer send to Nottstalgia without access to every other photo I have on pc! any ideas how to place just that one photo here? or I could send as email and someone else post it in the topic?
