Hubby worked at Hall's from '67-'74. He used to walk up flights of stairs to come out the top in Commerce Square to go to the little cafe you mentioned. He would always buy a sausage sandwich [or cob] which were wonderful. During that time he said the only business on the top 3 floors [empty floors between Halls and this business] was a clothing company. He thinks Ranby's was at the top of the building next door. He said that building was empty from Ranby's all the way down to Cliff Rd. Halls were the only agents in Nottm who supplied York Refrigeration. They did the cold rooms for restauran

Hi Frank My hubby worked in the office of JS Hall, on Cliff Rd. The storage place on the ground floor went back into the cave system. We remember Anthony Hall well, he lived at Bingham at that time. [may still do] Pete Quinton worked at JSH before going out on his own and starting Watnall Refrig. I think he lives in Ruddington now, or thereabouts. Didn't know he'd sold it, we haven't been in touch for years. Kath

Hi Caz, hope you are feeling better soon. Sounds like you need some goose grease on yer chest! We left Nottingham in 1977 to move to Surrey. We thought this was a huge step at the time, little did we know we'd be moving even further away. Hubby worked at the National Water Sports Centre at the time, and applied, and got, a job with the British Canoe Union then based in London. This office moved 3 miles from our home eventually. I remember that place but not sure exactly where it was. Was it just past the pit on the right as you went to Nuthall, about opposite the Broxtowe Inn? I remember the pit houses at the bottom of Bells Lane, was it Holden Square? There was another square just the same behind the Barleycorn, Harpenden Square. This was all my stomping ground as a kid, we'd wander all over the 'oppit from morning till night, nary a worry for our parents. I used to fish in Fowlers Pond nr the Miners Welfare. Happy days. Bill Frame was a well built man. He used to play goalie for Leicester City before becoming a landlord, first in Leicester, then the Hat. He kept his strong Scottish accent. I remember a big room upstairs for functions, and a garden in back.

My school friend lived at the Cocked Hat. It was a very nice pub then, but boy did it go downhill in latter years. Fights, fires and mayhem. Bill Frame wouldn't have stood for any of that [he was my friend's dad, the landlord]

I remember going to a cinema on Market St in the 60's and you came in upstairs. There was a half wall immediately infront of you on entering. The seats were off to the left. If you looked over the wall, you could see seats downstairs to the left, and the screen to your right. Is this the old News House? Kath

Hi there. Now I've requested this forum, I'd better start the ball rolling. Heard from my brother in Rise Park, that the Barleycorn and The Red Lion, both in Cinderhill, have or are going to, close down. My mother would turn over in her grave if she knew her watering holes were gone! Brother also said, that lots of pubs are closing at a rate of knots. I know the Cocked Hat in Aspley had gone, also the Duke of Newcastle in old Basford. Sad goings on.

Must admit, I'm partial to a frapaccino mesen, usually in an airport, flying out. Our local Safeway recently installed a Starbucks, it's the trend here, to put them in other businesses. Don't know about the UK?

I've put me thinking cap on, and remembered a few of the coffee bars that were around in the early to mid 60's. Capucci's on Parliament St was a well known one. Kardomah on King St, and Lyons cafe on Long Row, and a coffee bar on Bridlesmith Gate were 3 I went in quite often. The latter was on the left if you were heading towards Drury Hill [ah memories] and if you sat in the window and looked across the street, the single storey building opposite had a sign on the roof that said 'Ancient Lights' I guess it meant no one could block the light by building a tall building there? Mick. first of all, thanks for all the old pics of Nottingham that you post, both you and Rob237 give me lots of enjoyment seeing these old pictures. Can I ask you if its possible to get a print of the picture of the Shipstones dray outside the Council House? I have been looking for such a picture for ages, and the only ones I see aren't as good as this one, ie, they don't show the whole dray. I don't know if it's from Picture the Past, but I can't find it on there. I know you can order pics from that website. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kath

Crikey, they'd think they'd come to the Bronx! We did take them to Nottm in 94, and did a pub crawl round Nottm with of course, the Trip included. We stayed at, what was, the George Hotel to be nice and central. We didn't sleep a wink, talk about noisy, all those club goers cut along George St between clubs. When they finally quit walking/yelling, the dustbin men came, then a construction crew started up. Can laugh about it now.
