  1. Apologies: Regarding the above Alms Houses : Cliff Ton wrote: 'painted in several shades of blue'; I might add plus purple. I pass them by frequently on the bus. I'm sure they would look more attractive - of historic interest - painted magnolia, each house displaying a window box of red geraniums
  2. Crickeys! this lot on 'ere ud mek a vicar swear.
  3. Sod off, bleddy nuisances!
  4. 'The Army Game' in the fifties, spawned lots of good actors: Bernard 'I only arsked' Bresslaw - he was what was called: 'gormless' (not heard that word for a time, perhaps there's no such thing as 'gormless' people in the world today - due to political correctness!) Michael Medwin Norman Rossiter Alfie Bass Bill Frazer Clive? William Hartnell Charles Hawtree; I came across his place of abode on the South Coast - it had a blue plaque on the wall - apparently he used to throw wild parties in the tiny place, lots of his showbiz friends were invited down from London.
  5. He did lots of commentaries during the war years didn't he? Plus, didn't he commentate on Pathe News? He was a common tater!
  6. 'Take Your Pick' was definately on Friday nights at eight o' clock and 'Spot the Tune' was definately on Wednesday nights. If I liked something then I'd remember.
  7. Great for you to put this on mick, made me laugh both times. As a kid I loved this show: Friday nights at eight o' clock and was it 'The Army Game' on after? There were lots of quiz shows on back then; my favourite was: 'Spot the Tune' with a male quiz master, Jackie (?) and the bosomy Marian Ryan. My sister and I loved to play our version of the show when we were later in bed.
  8. I'm with poohbear on this one; I could never understand Bill Haley's popularity - not being ageist here but he did look rather old to be singing the songs that he did. 'Rock Around the Clock' wasn't that good, 'Get Out Ta That Kitchen And Rattle Those Pots and Pans' was much better. Wasn't there a film with 'Rock Around the Clock'? which would have ensured the record's success.
  9. Hi Michael Booth, welcome to 'Nottstalgia'. A beautiful little cameo you've written above of the music scene and how it thankfully changed during the 1950's. At the moment I'm writing an article on the 1960's and coming across your posting on 'Nottstalgia' has certainly helped as a pre-runner to this decade. I'm both pleased and proud to say that I have awarded you your first tick; Congratulations.
  10. So you guys got ticked off for wearing Brylcream, the way we girls got ticked of for spraying mirrors with our hair lacquer!
  11. Making us jealous mudgie; all I can say is don't sleep too tight in that hammock of yours because an alligator might just steal its way into your pond. Ouch!
  12. What a rotten trick!
  13. Love the light and shade on the photograph (courtesy of Cliff Ton) of 'Skinner and Rook' and the shops down Clumber Street. First shop at the left - double fronted - is Timpson's Shoe Shop; back in the 'Swingin' Sixties', Clumber Street was renowned for the amount of shoe shops to be found gracing its narrow pavements. Looks like the streets have become deserted because of a recent downpour but now the sun is out and business will soon be back to normal.
  14. You're right mudgie, regarding foxes: 'We harassed them in their natural environment'; that is why we should take the responsibility of caring for these beautiful creatures within ours.
  15. TAKING THE P. . . . (sorry don't want to get thrown off) FELLAS! No these were the days when the true Romanies camped in the meadow, made their pegs and came round later selling their wares at the back kitchen door. Makes me sound ancient doesn't it? But would rather have these memories than the modern ones you mention.
  16. Babs, I think you did right to mention your Uncle Joe and his tragic death: we'd never think that anything as awful as this could happen within one of Nottingham's past Industries. It must have been a terrible time for your family.
  17. Remember how when word got round at school that gypsies were in the meadow and we rushed down after tea and stood in awe and watched them around their camp fire making pegs?
  18. Brought up with it weren't we Kath? - Nature - Broxtowe Woods in the Frying Pan down the road: on up to the stream where the newts thrived and then on to the stile and into the meadow . . .
  19. RGR, your mum looks happy - when we are led to believe that it was tough being in the Land Army.
  20. I'm picturing you Compo watching the seals but I bet it was a bit of a shock to have the deer jump out . . .
  21. Hi Fiona, I've experienced lots of sightings of foxes around where I live. Once there were fields and woods around: I was lucky enough once to witness foxes sparring but then man sold the land and houses were built and the foxes were forced to enter suburbia . . .
