  1. Anybody got 'Novel Coronavirus' A.K.A 'Covid-19' yet? Very low infection rates in UK so far.. but it is very scary for anyone in later years with 'underlying health issues'.
  2. Ok Mick, I'm sure it is. Still puzzled by those roofs though. I must have a look next time I'm home. What I do recall is that there was a blackened passenger coach in the sidings on the St Alban's Rd side for years. We always thought it was left over from the crash.
  3. Hi Willow. That's the same report I found some years ago and posted on Stuart Frew's blog.
  4. Right.. excitement coming up!! 1. A fellow member of the pinkfishmedia site ( D.I.Y. Section) has already posted some shrink sleeving to me. @letsavagoo Will wait to see what arrives and whether I need to take up your kind offer. 2. I've just made a three egg and cheddar cheese omellette, using a touch of olive oil and a little butter. It was nice. 3. I've just exchanged heated words with 'Er Indoors'.. It seems that I NEVER wipe work surfaces.. and ALWAYS leave the lights on. Such certainty and statistical conviction is impressive, especially coming fr
  5. Ahh.. you say that.. but .... Willow.. I'm shocked.. . Such cynicism is unbecoming..
  6. Because I've bought fabric wrapped 'antique gold' 'retro flex' and I'm paranoid about the cut ends fraying. It looks old fashioned.. but has plastic colour coded insulation over the cores. Also, since I'm ( in my view) a competent, but unqualified person, I always try to do a very neat job. I've searched the B&Q site endlessly but can't find mention of heat shrink sleeving. I'm going into town shortly so will have another look. In other news..oddly, they do seem to stock round pin plugs.. (though not the sockets) There was a school of thought in hi-fi that they had more contact area th
  7. ??? Wigan North Western, which is about 5 miles from here and on the West Coast main line. But we go to Birmingham New Street and change there for Bristol Temple Meads.
  8. Not really Phil as I only need a few inches and would just be stuck with a nearly full reel. Yep. But they charge about 3 times what it costs on Ebay and again.. I'd be stuck with most of it. Hi Letsav.. I've worked out that I need 12 pieces each about 1/2 inch long, to wrap the ends of three cores once in the lamp, twice in the switch and once in the plug...So, about 6" maximinum in total. Short bits would be fine. Or it might only be two cores (4 pieces) in the switch as its double pole so I assume the live and neutral 'break' but the earth
  9. I was told it was Lidl, but it seems very much a lottery as to when they have them.
  10. Since I went to the Bristol Hi Fi Show on Friday.. I've been recovering.. I was already knackered from two very early mornings ( by my standards..). so getting up before 5:00 am for a 06:26 train to Bristol and arriving home after midnight was bound to leave me a bit drained.. I did nothing yesterday and not much more today. Tomorrow I need to seek out some electrical 'shrink sleeving' so I can finish the rewiring of 'Jane', who I've already mentioned. Amazing how hard this stuff is to find.
  11. And yesterday.. at the Bristol Hi Fi show, I was reminiscing about the time I played this tune VERY LOUD at a Hi Fi Show near Chesterfield about 1997. I played it so loud via wardrobe sized Tannoy Corner Horn speakers and massive valve amps.. that the chap in the room next door shut his music off. I apoligised later and we laughed about it yesterday... Worth playing loud though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy8dZEpEYrA Bloody Youtube isn't playing tonight... you'll have to click on the link!!
  12. Hi, I too discovered the same thing from a 10 CD box set called 'We Were First', which is available from Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/We-Were-First-Original-Versions/dp/B00QXYWAQE/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2CCI03QMG6MTH&keywords=we+were+first+cd&qid=1582239864&sprefix=We+Were+First%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-1 Check it out.
  13. Hi Mess, It's a complex subject as there were numerous pressings of the Beatles LPs once they really 'kicked in'. As I mentioned above, some records were pressed by 'rival' companies such as PYE and Decca on a contract basis, just to meet demand. Apparently some of them actually look red when viewed in strong light. Then we get into the 'digital' era, when who knows what was done to the original masters, in terms of 'digital re-mastering' etc. As a general rule I try to avoid most 'digital re-masters' as they generally don't improve things and often make them worse. There are excepti
  14. I think that many of us had a Dansette or similar. In the popular consciousness (Which included mine...) ..the only thing better was some sort of 'Radiogram'. I was just vaguely aware that there was better stuff out there, but since I'd have no chance of owning it.. I pushed it out of my mind. Through the 60s I became a little more aware of the real 'quality kit', such as amplifiers made by QUAD, Radford, Leak and a few others, 'Transcription' turntables from Garrard, Goldring-Lenco or Thorens, and speakers ranging from massive Tannoy 'horn' types, to somewhat more modest offerings from Wha
  15. That troubled me too. A 'large number of Trombones' is likely 76. 'Old LP's' is likely to mean the old 12" 78 r.p.m. discs of which you needed several to replay a decent symphony. (As distinct from the 'standard' 10" 78 r.p.m. 'single'.) I know of no standard record, either from the 'shellac' period, or the 'vinyl' era, which ran at 77. And ohhh.. no fault of anybody here.. but I am becoming increasingly exasperated by so called 'experts' on TV antiques programmes, who.. when confronted with what is clearly a 78 player, or a 78 record.. go on to say 'Ahh. Goo
  16. P.S. Old 78 records could be easily softened by placing in a 'moderate' oven for a few minutes, whereupon they would become pliable, and could.. if you were a Philistine, be turned into a short lived plant pot or similar receptacle. I personally took the view that recordings were 'social documents' and didn't do such things. I've always valued records of any sort.. except for a large consignment of James Last LPs all in mint condition, which I was given. I have always regarded James Last's conception of 'music' as an offence to humanity, and gave them away to a charity. I still feel
  17. Hi Beekay. Most 78s were made of 'Shellac' (q.v.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac ..which was mixed with ground slate, and usually 'carbon black', to make it.. err black. Some early records were also made of things such as vulcanised rubber and other materials.
  18. Hi Brew. I checked in the garage where the consumer unit lives. First, the fuse 'upstream' of the meter is 100A as I thought. Next, I recall there was originally a 30A rated feed to the kitchen for an electric cooker. I'm not sure if that is now used for the Induction Hob which is in the same place as the old cooker.. or if it's redundant. The new kitchen has two NEFF ovens a NEFF hob.. and a cheap nasty cooker hood. (I plan to change that..), plus 6 worktop sockets. Also 5 under cupboard lights and 6 ceiling spots. I've lost track of what is supplied by what. The
  19. I'm not getting into an argument between two electrically qualified people! However my understanding for what it's worth is that the big mains fuse between the street and the consumer unit (I think mine is 100A.. but can't be bothered going to look), protects that section of wiring. Thereafter, each of the main circuit breakers protects sections of the house wiring, such as 'upstairs lighting', (5A) 'downstairs sockets', (13A) etc.. with a separate higher rated feed ( 60A) for ovens. There are now also as I've mentioned above, assorted Earth Leakage devices which I believe are
  20. Very diplomatic Brew! I've just ordered a couple of metres of 'antique gold' 3 core 'retro' flex and a matching torpedo switch. The flex is modern plastic insulated stuff, with a fabric covering. I'll post a pic of the restored lamp when done.
  21. Depends if you use them Beekay. How do you normally log on?
  22. I had a few issues Sat night and at odd times through Sunday, but all seems well now. I've not changed my bookmark.
