  1. While searching for Beth Neilsen Chapman.. I came across this.. from Kate Wolf..who I'd never heard of.. Sadly she passed away in 1986.. but what a talent! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsXGzblg7Ws
  2. In the sites I frequent.. 'Just Sayin'.. is used sort of jokingly, to indicate that you are throwing something in.. but don't want to get into a major debate about it...
  3. Although I don't agree about the Turtles.., I do think it's a gem of a thread. Examining, panning or loving song lyrics in a thread like this is a great idea. This could turn into an epic thread! If you want an apparently inane 'pop' lyric.. how about 'Zabadak', by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch. Most of the lyrics make no sense, but it's a great tune with fab percussion.. and the lyrics do include a little explanation. 'Look for meaning not in words But in the way you're feeling If it's love we'll understand For love is all revealing'
  4. Totally agree with Kev on this one. The Turtles were a 'good time' band who wrote some great pop songs. There's no requirement for the lyrics to be erudite, or otherwise 'classy'. If I recall correctly.. the Turtles had some sort of association with Frank Zappa and his ilk, as well as many of the well known US West Coast bands of the time. They also worked with Ray Daviies of the Kinks. Those guys spent much of their musical lives satirising anything and everything. Also agree about Mc Williams. All pretty obvious stuff.. in similar vein to 'Excerpt From A Teenage Opera' by Kei
  5. Regarding earthworks.. Below is not a map from Nottm, but does show a former munitions depot near Rainford Lancs, now used for warehousing. It has similar odd looking earthworks. (Raised banks between each brick building..to direct any blast upward. It was a WW2 construction and it is still just possible to see a curved 'crop mark' showing a former link to the railway, which in turn goes to Kikby near Liverpool, which had a large munitions factory in WW2. https://www.google.com/maps/@53.4983731,-2.8096792,1927m/data=!3m1!1e3 Just sayin'
  6. Shaggy Ink Caps which seem to grow every year in a local field. II took this with my phone a couple of weeks ago. Also known around Nottm as 'Cocky Lads'. Latin name is Coprinus Comatus. Edible when young and firm, though the only time I tried them I wasn't keen. They quickly 'deliquesce'..or turn to liquid.. which is basically a mass of black spores and has been used to make ink. Not to be confused with the more tan coloured 'Common Ink Cap', (Coprinus Atramentarius) which is not 'shaggy' in appearance. Also nominally edible but causes very scary symptoms if e
  7. Was never a fan of surround myself. Doesn't seem right hearing 3D sounds linked to a 2D image. That said, I do think that adding a decent stereo sound set up pays dividends.
  8. One of the first things a true audiophile learns, is that volume.. like size.. isn't everything. Clarity is clarity. Garbage is garbage. Turning garbage up just gives you louder garbage.
  9. Today I will mostly be fitting a new radiator fan to Mrs Col's ageing shed of a Punto. This was ordered from Eurocarparts on 19th Sept. Originally promised in 2-3 working days..which became 5-7, days then 'whenever we can get it.' Finally advised on 7th Oct that they had got one which would be with me 'in 2-3 working days'. After 4 days I got an email from DHL promising delivery next day. (Friday 11th) It didn't arrive. Didn't arrive Saturday either. Check up on DHL tracking site showed they'd picked it up from Birmingham on Tues. 8th and sent it to East Midlands. From there i
  10. It's a known issue that the speakers in flat TVs can be pretty poor. Most if not all of them also 'fire' out of the back and are meant to reflect off the bachk wall. Some very new TV's do actually fire sound through the screen. Don't ask me how. Basically, you can connect almost any sort of sound system to the TV via the assorted 'outputs', on the back. Some devices can also connect via wi-fi or blutooth if the TV ( and owner) is suitably 'smart'. As Beekay correctly points out, even a small 'hi fi' system connected to the TV can help. Might also be worth exploring
  11. Raining , breezy.. overcast and miserable.. Today I shall make Hummus.. for consumption with thinly sliced bits of carrot.. for lunch. I'm due an 'alternate days' session on the weights a bit later. Then I think I'll spend the rest of the day 'ripping' vinyl to digital and adding it to the music store on my music server. Much as I actually love listening to vinyl on my posh record player.. it is so much more convenient to be able to just pick a few tunes from the server and listen on headphones while the boss is nodding off in front of the telly. If it stops raining between now and De
  12. More power to 'em. There is no law against being naked in public. At least in England. It all seems to depend on whether they can 'get' you for 'Indecent Exposure', 'Disturbing the Peace' etc.
  13. Reminded me of this song. We used to sing it in Henry Whipple and I can see the school hall in my mind. Bare walls except for a couple of pictures of bewigged old composers like Bach and Handel.
  14. This is a public service announcement. In all seriousness, there are at least 40 species of 'Agaricus' mushrooms growing in the UK. These are mostly white, with gills which start out pinkish and turn to brown. Most have a strong resemblance to the white mushroom from the supermarkets, and the 'Field Mushroom', Agaricus Campestris. Most are edible, some aren't, and a couple will make you very sick. If you don't know for certain what you have got, DO NOT EAT IT! If it stains yellow on handling. (Agaricus Xanthoderma) DO NOT EAT IT. Just to add to the confusion, the w
  15. Yesterday I decided to go for a walk up the hill, but by a different route to normal. So, I walked in an ever decreasing circle. Uphill to the top of the village and left along through a little hamlet called Longshaw Common and big views over to Winter Hill, Rivington Pike etc., to the north. After a mile or so, left again and uphill past a local pub called the Holt Arms, but known to locals as 'the Foot of the Causeway', the 'Foot'... or the 'Fewt'. Despite the proximity to Liverpool and more than a few refugee 'Scousers' residing locally, the predominant accent is pure Lancashire.
  16. Welcome Peter. Whereabouts in Bestwood were you born? (We don't mess about here.. the interrogation starts immediately.... )
  17. P.S. I should add that I've not eaten biscuits regularly for years, and none at all since I started being all healthy..
  18. I have a wife who is very proficient at breaking biscuits..and the chocolate coating on Magnums, before she's even got them out of the car.
  19. 'Cow and Gate..Farmer's Wife..Double.Devon..Cream..' Amazing what rubbish gets stored in our brains.. Dreams about work after retirememnt. They seem to be very common.. Just look here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Dreams+about+work+long+after+retirement%3F&t=ffnt&ia=web The common thread seems to be things going wrong, like Ben leaving food all over the country, or whatever. Those of us who've met Ben know he's a snappy dresser and very tidy. I reckon it's that.. nightmare failures of his natural tidiness.. But there's probably a deeper psychology
  20. Well it's technically Monday, but I'm on the end of Sunday. Slowly sipping a second small glass of wine and off to bed shortly. As it happens I've not had a drop of alcohol for three weeks till just now. I must be ill.. Been on a bit of a 'health kick'. Mostly 'low carb' meals..especially lunchtime and mid week. It's not really difficult.. just replace things such as spuds, rice etc., with loads of veggies such as cabbage, cauli, green beans or whatever. No snacks. 16:8 diet, which means you eat your day's food in 8 hours and fast for 16. Not much effort for me to do that as
  21. Yebbut.. Ben... The school pathway is still clearly visible next to the Community Centre. The one I'm on abaaht is closer to the houses next along to the right.. Here's a street view. https://www.google.com/maps/@52.9950332,-1.1666075,3a,75y,24.96h,84.11t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sPTnk8r6aPvsJ-lKziUbKLw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 You can see the school path on the left, with the safety rail to stop Kamikaze Kids from running out under buses. To the right is the old gate leading to where I think the mast may have been. Still some evidence of something there. A few old posts etc.
  22. Ooops!! Sorry to hear it Ben. It's a trifle vexing when that happens.. Or so I'm told... I rarely write gret long pieces..
  23. Another one for Ben. I recall that somewhere just below the 'bottom' entrance to the Whipple-Padstow complex, along Gainsford Crs., there was a small hill, or bank, on which stood a mast of some sort. It was often referred to as the Rediffusion ' aerial. I assumed it received the TV signal that was then distributed house to house as cable 'Rediffusion' TV. I doubt it's still there. Edit. Looking more closely.. on this link you can clearly see the land between the Community Centre and the next house down. There's evidence of an old gate and some sort of accessto a small patch
  24. Wasn't the hill on which Padstow stood actually called Sunrise Hill? That would be OK too. I'm now thinking about access. 350 homes could generate a few hundred traffic movements per day. I've just looked on Google Maps and was surprised to see that the only 'vehicular' acess to the site is still the one from the top of Padstow Road. Those who know the area will know how difficult that can be in bad weather, and it's really not suitable for much traffic. Maybe a new access from the bottom of the hill somewhere along Eastglade? That also would generate even more traffic along Southglade an
  25. Can't see them. I woldn't call myself a 'Mycologist' but I have a decent laymans knowledge of a few fungi. Sadly, not many spruce forests round here.. From what I recall all Entolomas are at best 'inedible'. Aslo from memory 'Gomphidius' tend to have a pointed gap. Here are images from Google of the species you mention.
