  1. If you think about it.. it's hardly surprising that more of us have BP monitors and other devices. We live longer..survive heart attacks that would have killed us 40 years ago etc. etc. But to do that many of us need pills. It seems to be a 'numbers game'. For example., most of my heart meds are designed to ease the load on the heart and prevent future problems . My two latest meds are statistically shown to increase life expectancy in heart failure. Doesn't mean I'LL live longer but I might... Worth a try.... Incidentally, I don't normally notice any side effects from
  2. No!! Adjust the context! None of us is more than halfway to infinity...if that!
  3. But Jim, much as you have my sympathy, your usual rational stance would be to take the pills and research any condition the Doc is pointing to.. Pragmatism is your friend here..
  4. @mrsbThey had me on one of those things in hospital after a heart attack in 1996. Next morning my arm felt like it had been through a food mixer. They had me on one of those, plus a drip and a nasal oxygen feed last Monday and none really bothered me.
  5. My machine is a Braun Exact-Fit 5 which was about 70 quid off Amazon. It doesn't hurt.
  6. It's been an interesting 24 hours. There's a long 'back story' to this, going back to last years 'post op' meds which included Morphine and loads of Codeine, most of which is still in the cupboard. Last year I thought I'd found that codeine messes with my heart's pace and rhythm, which led to some scary symptoms. Yesterday, I used a tiny amount of codeine and again got alarming symptoms. A lot of googling revealed that 3 of my 4 heart meds can have an 'additive' effect on the effects of codeine and vice versa. No wonder I felt so rough.. And yet nobody bothered to tell me thi
  7. Seems we missed the worse up here in the Grand Duchy I hope everyone stays safe and dry. My congratulations to Mr and Mrs P P. I got out of hospital yesterday and so far it's going OK. Still not much strength in new knee, but it's only been 4 days. I'm getting by on a few paracetamol. Just need to keep on with the exercises.
  8. Indeed. Last time I was up and breaking all the rules in 24 hours. This time I couldn't straighten the knee enough to feel confident it was locked and wouldn't collapse. Also woke up in severe pain at 02:30 and had a few other issues. But improvement has been dramatic since and I may be home tomorrow. Presently in bed in my single room with ensuite. Prof Kay's Senior Research Fellow came to check on me today, as did someone from Enhanced Care just to make sure I'm OK. All seems very well organised.. So.. things still going OK.
  9. All done. Enhanced Care for a bit.then onto ward. Op was calm and peaceful. I was much more awake and aware than last time, but no pain. Still dead from the waist down which is better than from the neck up.
  10. Hi Marg, and thanks. They seem to have two 'intakes' daily..one at 7:00 a.m. and one around 11 ish. Last time I went in at 11 ish and 'went down' around 1:00 ish So I'm guessing I'll be 'going down' around 9 ish.
  11. A large ish spider came and sat next to me on the carpet yesterday as I was fiddling with the new gas fire. I re- located him over the fence to next door... Today I have been cutting the grass because it needed doing but also to keep busy. I'm getting 'wound up about my second knee op tomorrow. Not worried by the op itself as I know what happens now. It's just the thought of weeks of Rehab, physio and a fair bit of pain.. Still...has to be done..
  12. I'm not in favour of that sort of PC. However, re: our current discussion, we'll have to agree to differ, or 'suspend hostilities ' for a day or so. I'm in the middle of getting all prepped for my second knee op in the morning and I can't focus on much else ....
  13. Oz, I wouldn't be so presumptious as to claim any understanding of the subtleties of Australian politics, but what you seem to be describing is a deep polarisation of opinion within the electorate, being highlighted by a poorly designed referendum question, which gives insufficient detail of the proposal or its implementation, where a simple 'yes or no' answer will inevitably lead to a continuation, or even deepening of the rift, rather than a mutually agreed resolution. Sounds very familiar from here....
  14. A surprising red herring from you Jim! I did not use 'she/herthey/their'. I used 'she/they' simply to indicate that she said both that 'she' (I.E herself)and 'they' (I.E. The Tory Party) are 'kicking out Woke'. etc.. You are seeking 'political correctness' in my writing where it doesn't exist. Interesting that you should single out Buckingham University. It is a very small and only moderately successful Uni, often regarded as a bit of a joke in wider academic circles.. It was created as Britain's first 'Private' uni in 1973 largely as a result of input from Margar
  15. Yebbut.. you didn't say exactly wot I sed...
  16. I heard it on TV. What does that actually mean? Where is the evidence? The bottom line here IMHO, is that she started out by stating that she/they are: That, to me, is a very clear statement that in her/their view, 'woke ideology' (a vague and very unscientific term), and the 'steady creep of political correctness' (again, a very vague, non specific and essentially political/ideological concept) are ALREADY endemic within the scientific communty. In other words.. she has already made up her mind that these 'things' exist, are active within
  17. Spoke to my friend about printer drivers for Win 11. And by the way our printer isn't Canon..it's Brother. My DSLR is Canon. He says we had to get the driver from Brother's's website, but that the issue was to do with the order in which we did things and it came down to getting the driver onto the PC first and only then switching on the printer.. or vice-versa... If I did loads of prinitng I'd get one of those thinmgs with big ink bottles. .. they do seem to work well. As it is I got our last lot of inks from: https://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk/?msclkid=faf60a2053b11
  18. I should add that I don't see 'Aid' as the only, or even the major international strategy required. What's needed is a counter to the economic and therefore political influence of China, Russia and religious extremism in sub Saharan Africa and elsewhere. We took our eyes off the ball there, hence the current anti-French, anti Western and pro Russian sentiments which are now so prevalent.
  19. Correct. Sorry, I misread her Wikipedia entry. That said, I find it slightly disturbing that she apparently expressed an interest in being a politician from the age of six. 'Seeing things in Black and White', is simply a denial of reality. As I said above, human sexuality is overwhelmingly binary, but has always included homosexual, bi-sexual and other 'non binary' elements. That much is indisputable. Clearly, she is entitled to live and express her own sexuality according to her own proclivities and beliefs. That's not what I meant, or what I said. Sh
  20. Meant to come back on this... The thing is that although they were all competent singers and in some cases 'broader' entertainers in the old 'variety' style.. they were used shamelessly by the UK recording industry as 'vehicles' for 'covers' of UK hits. A good way to cash in on the popularity of a song. So Frankie Vaughan did 'Green Door' (Jim Lowe) 'Tower of Strength' (Gene Mc Daniels), 'Kewpie Doll' (Perry Como) 'Kisses Sweeter Than Wine' (Jimmy Rodgers) and many other covers. Humperdink's biggest hit 'Release Me, was also an American song done previously by lots, in
  21. Yep... we tried that for weeks but without success, until our friend fixed it. I'll give him a call and see if he can remember what the fix was.
  22. Many in the general population have picked the word up and bandy it around pretty much indiscriminately as a pejorative against anything they disapprove of, from perceived 'political correctness', through to anything remotely to the left of the current pretty right of centre and dominant 'consensus'. However, there are many others, especially in the political sphere, who know EXACTLY, what they are doing when they use 'woke', as a 'dog whistle' and basically a 'cheap shot', to try to draw otherwise sensible people into supporting their lunacy. It's way beyond that, a
  23. We got a new PC recently, with Win 11. It too refused to 'see' our ageing Canon DCP-540CN printer/copier/scanner.. but eventually, a friend sorted it for us. Sadly, I have no idea how...
  24. Rather a lot of assumptions there Jill. The major one being that due to the honest and upright efforts of the 'papperazzi', the Gutter Press rarely needs, or seeks the cooperation or permission of their victims.
