  1. RE: #28 If I knew what that meant I'd try to give a better reply. Hehehe. Cheers Stephen take care.
  2. You beat me Sir! I was at Scan security then, they changed their name to Securex... or had I moved to Sawley security? One of 'em anyway, and the wage was £3.25 an hour. I've a ton of stories from me security days, ghosts, guns, lose women, accidents, break-ins, the dog I was handling chewing away at me leg etc.... never a dull moment for me. Posted on munitions sites, retail, industrial, colleges, garages, just about everything over the years. But the 15 hour shifts passed wuickeer for me than the other lads - who never seemed to get a raid, attack or bother when they were on the same site
  3. Let fink now.... chippies I used... Hayes or Haynes of Kirkwhite St (excellent potato fritters and bits). Ryland Crescent: Great fish, but only had Corona pop. Waterway Street corner of Summerby? Not very good. Waterway Street nearly opposite the corner one above. Quick service, but the chips seemed a little underdone. Nice mushy peas though. Wilford Road near Maypoles. Not bad at all, first time I used wooden forks. Off Wilford Road, was it on Kinglake Street? Their pies were different to others, I think she made em herself. Arkwright Street, 'The Friary' Excellent all round! Arkwrigh
  4. Mornin' basfordred. Hope yer okay. I also managed the Co-op Fruit and wet fish shop on Aspley Lane, near the island for few years. Happy days (Wot wur they eh?) Congestion seems endemic all over at the moment dunnit? Cheers
  5. I'm probably a bit confused nowadays. My favourite chippy was the one on Ryland Crescent. Slow service, but worth waiting for I thought. Didn't like his 'pop' though - Corona, the one you could not put the cap back on to keep aerated. TTFN
  6. One of the first things I bought with the money earned from working on me paper rounds, chopping wood for business under the viaducts (Dave), Heasons, and the Grove cinema, was a wind-up record players. I got it from Bridgway Hall Methodist Hall jumble sale, but it was not cheap, as so many folk wanted to buy it, the held an auction, and I to up to 5/11d! I gleefully got home with it, and then started to save up again to buy a record to play on it. Huh... What a Wally!

    The Globe Cinema

By gum yes. But I would like to stress that I did not take a water pistol or pea-shooter with me. Also, I did not assist the gang in the distracting of the attendant as we hid behind the curtains of the fire doors and let in other member of the gang. Cough cough...
  8. Spot on Sir! I have similar memories. One worth a mention, was when I fell asleep in the waiting area, and Mam went home without me, When I woke up, I continued to wait for a few hours for her, getting a little confused, I bravely open the swing doors to have a look for her - my only view experienced of the great line of wash tubs, and gigantic airy poles used - before I was unceremoniously removed with a clip around the ear-hole for entering the ladies domain! Do you remember the Plumtree Arms pub nearby? Take care.
  9. I worked Sundays only for a few hours at Jack's Locomotion Pub (or was it the Locomotive?), The Imperial cinema often got my custom, cause they tended to show more of the old films. Perhaps they were cheaper to rent for them. But it suited me, even then I enjoyed the oldies films. On Wilford Street, was where my Dad used to house his cart horse every night (British Railways Deliveries), and later the lorry he used. And of course, the bridge I fell off into the canal was there... There was a hardwear store that must have stocked everything available to us - opposite the Maypole shop. Can't
  10. Ah... The Crescent. When I was in digs at 49 Wilford Crescent East (Mary and Jack Gavin) opposite the library and Dr Coopers surgery, I used to use the Crescent, Shipstones it was. The bogs outside were always clean I remember. Fred put in a juke-box, one of the earliest to do so I think, although not welcomed by the older customers. TTFN all.
  11. Nor do I recall one, although they had not started trading when I lived there. The food shops I can recall are Maypole, Marsdens, the wet fish shop, Sanderson's tripe/cooked meat shop and a bread/cob shop. Happy days! Cheers.
  12. My Mam worked in the kitchens of the Hong Kong restaurant. One day she was as usual, opening some tins without labels and as intstructed putting them into a gigantic pan ready for the evening rush. She came across a bit of label left on a can on this occasion - and identified it as 'Top Cat' cat food! It's true! Each time they were prosecuted and barred from running a food establishment, they told it on paper for a shilling to another member of the family and carried on as usual! As far as she rememberd, no one ever complained about the food. Chippy The one there I recall, was called 'Th
  13. Yes. me too over the last few days. As you say, it has occasionally been taking a couple of tries to get through.

    Heasons

I had a Saturday morning job at Heasons Sir. Sorting the waste out, not in the shop. Do you recall Sandersons Tripe and cowheel shop on Arkwright Street? The Pawnbrokers shop always fascinated me, I don't know why, we never used it. And the large Toy shop further towards Trent Bridge on the right - where I bought my model air-plane kits (Air-Fix?) and 2d lucky bags. Thanks for the memory prompting Sir.
  15. I've got an interesting story of the AC/DC mixed supply in Nottingham. At home we were on 240 AC I think. My gal friend came round, as I was changing an on/off switch on Dad's bedroom wall that has been fitted upside down and it was bothering him. I shouted down the stairs for someone to turn of the power, and proceeded to get thrown across the room as I got the shock, due to their turning of the wrong switch. (We had two, one for lighting and one for power points) Tsk! I took Suzie home on me motorbike to Lenton. When she told her mum of the happening, it reminder her that she needed the
  16. Re #2: Everything I'm afraid. Tsk! Keeps going off all the time tonight, on and off. Re #3: Thanks Sir.
  17. The GNCS as was, got themselves into financial difficulties through borrowing too much from the CWS. Eventually the CWS bought them out an took over as I recall.
  18. Re #23 Annoyin' innit? Re #24 Ta. Yer learn summat every day. (In my case, I forget something eveyday as well Hehe)
  19. I'm about to give up for the night - the internet connection keeps fading on and off... again! Wont say who the provider is but it's Bloomin' Terrible! Hehe, TTFN all, Tsk!

  23. I wus workin' in me first job as van-lad ut Whiteheads Robin Hood Confectionery (Bulwell), un we had a late delivery to Dancing Slipper one Friday night. I saw dancing together, rather tipsily John Winfield and Barry Lyons. The next day I went to Forests away game against Leeds - and they lost 7-0! Oh dear. TTFN
  24. No, I don't recall chasing after the elefants. I did chase after the milkmans, Shippo's, the scrap man, the coalman, and Georges horses with mi bukkit - and Dad selling it to people who had allotments or gardens though. When I wus very young, I remember me Dad coming home with a sack of horse-dung from work at British Rail. Take care.
