  1. Stu, the site where you got the info about the Virgin shop mentions The Beatles and The Stones making regular appearances at the ABC and The Odeon. Now, other Nottstalgians correct me if im wrong, (but do post proof here!) The Beatles came to The Odeon once, and The Elizabethan Rooms, at the "Big Coop" on Parliament st, once In fact, my mum sent off a postal order for a ticket for me, for the Odeon gig, which got returned as they had sold out! They also played in Mansfield, but id hardly say made "regular" appearances here! As far as im aware, and ive just asked Rob Smith too, The Sto
  2. I think you're right there, I know it wasnt Redifusion, as mentioned, was elsewhere, Granada is favourite.
  3. After a fair bit of research, mainly from one of the longest standing Virgin employees that i know at the Nottm store, i still cannot get any confirmation of the original "disagreement" that Virgin ever had a shop on King st, however, there was one on Clumber st, so i was wrong there! As for Dixons, when they moved from King st, they went to Broad Marsh Centre, where the Works? shop is now, never detouring onto Clumber st, i worked for them at that time, so am certain of that. It was the time that Dixons closed King st as a camera/audio shop, but i was installed as the manager at number 7 shor
  4. AH! That confirms it! Bamber says about Virgin being at 7 King St from 73 onwards, i know 100% that that is definitely not true, as i managed the store that Dixons owned at number 7 in 1974! Apart from that PJ states " I could be wrong............" And Bamber asks " Wasnt Virgin at the bottom of King St......?" He wasnt saying they were...he was asking! The shop i managed at number 7 in 1974, sold tapes, lp's and indeed 8 tracks, could it be you are mistaking it for a Virgin shop? After all, it wasnt called Dixons....? Btw, i was pulling your leg about the spelling. Didnt you see that
  5. Confirmed above in the thread, Craig. There most certainly was a Virgin record store on Kings Street. I used to visit it a couple of times weekly It's the premises that became the 'Pen Sense' shop. I don't recall there being such a thing as a 'Virgin Megastore' at that time of day. It was a small shop with a basement I and can definitely tell you it was there. Stu, i was looking for someone else to confirm it, not the guy im disagreeing with! And just to be Mr Pedantic, its King St, without an "S" Come on other Nottstalgians, someone must know the shops on the street! A photo woul
  6. Beefy, the name of the sports bar was RKO, where i also worked, at the same time i did Love Shack. It was always ram packed on a Saturday night, and it was at this time i was also doing pitch announcing at Forest, and would get some light hearted heckling from some of the supporters who would use the place after the game.
  7. Virgin were never there, they were always where they are now, not opening a retail store in Nottingham until the 80's i actually did an outside broadcast from the shop when it first opened, fronted by my then colleague Erica Hughes, and his highness Richard Branson was in attendance As for a record shop in that area, i actually managed what was my former workplace Dixons, as a shop that sold off all the old records, cassettes, and 8 tracks that the other Dixons couldnt move, could that have been it? Well its in this thread ?? where you told us you did the "outside broadcast from the sho
  8. It certainly had an effect on my partner who was attacking me with it, i remember side stepping him, grabbing the offending arm, doing a very hard downward attack on him, and almost breaking his arm! Those were the days before the nanny state had martial artists wearing safety gear, i ask you, if youre in a street attack scenario, you cant ask the attacker if you can nip home to put your protective stuff on!
  9. Dunno if its the same one, but when i was on Radio Trent, there was always a fortnight during early (ish) summer, that loads of stuff took place in The Market square. Usually, Radio Nottingham did their week first, and then our lot at Trent the 2nd week. Before i was with the station, i remember doing a karate demo on stage with a number of karate ka (fellow karate folk!) where we did a routine against a knife attack, unfortunately, we had to do it straight after some clowns had drenched the stage in water during their act! Wet wood and bare feet make for dangerous goings on, especially whe
  10. When i/we were kids, we had bonfire night on whichever November 5th fell on, apart from Sunday i recall, so, can someone tell me why we now have almost a week of it? This year it falls on Monday, but so far have had fireworks going off almost non stop since the Friday before. Im not against it at all, its just that ive been lumbered with a number of cats, and trying to keep the buggers in has become a pain in the arse, especially as its spread over so many days!
  11. I wondered what was going on when i was in there last week, lots of empty shelves etc, and a notice saying about "improvements" PS. Red, whats that got to do with Goldsmith street?
  12. I know this is a late reply, but, a l couple of interesting facts here, first, me and Dazzer go back a long way in our radio careers together, we were both at Trent, Gem, and then Century together...just ask him about how i stitched him up like a kipper with an old school mate who had become a detective! And secondly, i was working with Stan at a venue at Weekday Cross, it wasnt "an audience with" thing, but similar, when, during the earlier part of the evening, which wasnt overly busy Stan says to me that he'd left his car back at the City ground, and if he didnt retrieve it before a certain
  13. When i first went there in the 70's, they had an Italian guy who used to wash up and do the menial chores, in exchange for a place to sleep.....it used to be under the sink!
  14. I was in there a couple of thursdays ago, they make curry the way it used to be 30 years ago, which i really like! I notice though, that to say its hardly the "poshest" place in town, the prices arent exactly in line with the, shall i say, slightly less posh surroundings! Having said that, id sooner eat there than most places in town!
  15. Just bought " A Cellarful Of Motown" vol3, these are songs that never saw the light of day back then, there are a couple of storming tracks on it, best one in my opinion is The Spinners, " Memories of her love keep haunting me" A typical Motown Monster!
  16. Not playing sure i said that..............................yesterday Hmmmm.........well RR, the sentence certainly contains the title of the song.............. even tho'\it only looks like you were asking him for a clue...............Mick?
  17. Sorry Mick.......................shame on me !!!
  18. Tavares "Whodunit" I had the pleasure of working with the guys, along with Rose Royce some years back.
  19. Sorry to be Mr Picky, but our Edwin was not a reggae singer..........
