  1. Thanks Cliff Ton for your response. The garage that I said was not there back in the 50s was the one shown on later photos directly at the side of the Transport Cafe/Indian Restaurant and now on Google seems to be a car wash and valet centre. The waterway between Danks and the Hicking building was the Tinkers Leen. I have found a photograph of the waterway as it is now, courtesy of the photographer John Sutton and whilst the picture is copyrighted, it is also licensd for further reuse. Back in the 50s, as I said in my earlier post, there was a structure across the waterway between the two
  2. Hello Ashley - how's things? Trust the wife is OK now. Think you are right about the colour of the neon sign. Definitely remember the waterway between Danks and the old Hicking building being flowing; not stagnant as it appears now. Again you are right about the factory being Turneys but the petrol station was never there back then, to the best of my memory. As for the sex shop, well, don't think those places were about in the 50s. If they were, never saw them or heard of them. You can see your 'Gentlemens Urinals' on PTP under London Road. You and your father would have been going t
  3. The posts re the Globe/Greyhound and the old Arkwright Street School and their various links brought back memories of London Road back in the 50s: 1. Coming out of town at night over the London Road Railway Bridge towards Trent Bridge, there was a large neon sign up high on the side of a building(not sure if the old Hicking/Hooters building or one that has been since demolished nearer to the bridge. Neon sign was coloured, in the shape of a Martini glass which was slowly filled up and when full, coloured bubbles went up in all directions. This repeated itself and I think it may have bee
  4. Re the bonfire........Did they once use to have a massive bonfire and fireworks display at Wollaton Park on Guy Fawkes Night? Remember going there when a young one with parents and other relatives. Recollect an embankment overlooking the fire and display, together with a stone wall and an old dry moat at the top of the embankment. Closest I can place that now is on PTP at the site of the 1970 Balloons Special.
  5. littlebro, Nice shots of the Square. The grey skies, reflections on wet pavements and a proud lion remind me of my old Nottingham back in the 50s/early 60s. Shame about what has been done to the square IMHO. Two questions???.....Is that Kev and Martine with their backs to you near their wedding chariot? and what caused that bloody great crack around the lower part of Leo?
  6. Ashley....the front number plate no longer being required?
  7. All black and white squares down here Compo.
  8. Followed with interest the various posts and views on the subject of the Diamond Jubilee and the role of the Monarchy in this present age. For a number of years, this country has had calls from politicians, business people and the community for us to drop the Queen and become a Republic. However, on every visit to this country by various members of the royal family, the crowds are unbelievable wherever a royal goes and the public demonstrations of love and respect are amazing. But, when the Queen visits Australia, the crowds are even greater and the feeling for the Queen is clearly visible
  9. It will count, Fynger..... Unfortunately I am out of a pure malt but I have a very nice blend Scotch Whisky that has got my taste buds going already!
  10. Hello Babs...........the names do not ring a bell, sorry. Re the toast time; think I will still have a drink to them this evening. 2pm GMT would be about 2-3 am Monday morning down here and methinks I may be sleepy byes.
  11. Kev and Martine....Best wishes for a great day and a long, healthy and prosperous union. It's 9.35am on Sunday the 3rd of June 2012 down here so there is not long to go now. Will raise a glass this evening. Trevor S.

  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9pfUwbsKAk Interesting connection to Notts!!
  16. Morning Gents. Perhaps one or more of you miners/retired miners would have worked alongside a tall Notts lad who would be in his mid 60s now by the name of Dave Allen. His middle initial was G and therefore his nickname was Gall. Gall went to school with me at Arnold and had an Aunt living in Arnold. He left school and joined the Army. After that, he worked the pits but in what capacity I cannot tell you. He was on Friends Reunited some years ago and that was where I saw his posts re the army, marriage and 'workin down t'pits'. Unfortunately Gall has disappeared from FR and no one
  17. Roy Rogers. Michael Booth...Cisco Kid was the first show I saw on that danged, ornery newfangled TV.
  18. Evening Mick....Just going on your post re the clues are in the photo....1. A Bed (or part) 2. A Ford across the stream 3. A car Park (parking bay on road. Didn't read your reply to Compo so I will go to my room now!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Want to know something really funny? I got the same joke that Michael Booth posted via e-mail some two weeks ago from a friend in Tampa, Florida. Down here, you are called a bastard at least once a day, with every type of descriptive word or verb in front of it by friends and family alike. It is a term of endearment (providing it is said in the right context). Deaf, dumb, blind, stupid, drunk, fu*&^%g, slow, fat, thin, tight, slack, stuck-up, pommie, yankee, scottish, welsh. Fat.........I went to the Hospital a few years ago and they wrote on my admission chart the word OBESE! St
