  1. I never had them as a child either, but they were rife in my childrens school and I would spend hours combing them out of their hair and treating their heads and then I got them, even though I would keep my hair tied back. I realised that when I was combing their hair, some of the nits were landing on my sweater and when I took it off over my head......... On the plus side they do say it's a sign of clean hair. Nits cannot grip onto greasy hair. Tip of the day for anyone needing to know: Teatree Oil is very good for getting rid of the pests and for then repelling them.
  2. As long as it comes up at high tide it might get as far as Cromwell Lock as long as it keeps to the centre and away from the hidden islands at North Clifton.
  3. Possibly to do with the mining subsidence mentioned in the above article? We moved up to Watnall in 63, but I was only 5 at the time.
  4. Here's a bit more about the Hall. I didn't know about Hollygirts association with it, but that was way before my time (well 3 years!) and although I must have been there when it was still standing I don't remember it, however I do remember my brother and our friends playing up there, particularly down the old air raid shelter that we found in the grounds.......now that was spooky! http://www.nottinghampost.com/Home-Boer-War-veteran-fell-victim-mining-problems/story-22710654-detail/story.html
  5. Yep it was and probably still is haunted. Several occupants saw an old lady in grey in the house and in the back garden. I used to know one of the owners, but cannot recall her name at this moment, and have been in the house. It definitely has an atmosphere that affects the area just round about it too, having said that it's not bad, just noticeable. But then again Watnall has an awful lot of history and the house is very old so it's not surprising really. My grandparents house next door had its fair share of unexplained happenings, for example one night while we were staying there the dog su
  6. It is awful to watch the ones you love going through this slow process of degeneration and all we can do is be there to support them and each other. Thank goodness it is now recognised and support is there in varying forms. Perhaps through the darkest hours it helps to remember the good times and remind ourselves that they were not always like this.
  7. The farmhouse, was right next door to the Queens and is still there, with Stone Cottage on the other side (very haunted and still there) and then the Police house. Next was the jitty and then the row of cottages the first of which was occupied by the Baumbers and their neighbours being the Hazledines. The space at the side of the Queens used to be their veg garden and orchard, and was sold off to make way for the houses that they built down there, but no houses have been demolished in that area. I know as I lived there myself from 1963 until 1980, and still visit regularly as my Mum is a resi

  9. Welcome richonmc1. Was that Stone Cottage that you lived in? My grandparents lived in the farmhouse between Stone Cottage and the Queens Head,
  10. My grandma had Alzheimers in the days before it was recognised as such. It was very difficult for us all as a family as she lived next door to us so we were regarded as her carers with no other help offered. She would wander off, even in the snow wearing very little, she was incontinent usually in our house as she would come across when she needed the toilet. She fed the birds by putting whole loaves of bread out and so attracting rats, and she managed to set fire to her house. The only way we had any help was when she fell and broke her hip on one of her wanders in the snow. Then Grandma was

  17. Well an up date of sorts: Went over to clear up the mess they had made, one curious bizarre thing was that they had very carefully moved two old dolls out of the way to somewhere safe. I had fully been expecting them to be damaged as they have a seat immediately beneath the window which was smashed in order to gain entry! Also had a chat with the police as they phoned while I was there and apparently an image was picked up on one of their cameras (which were fitted a month ago following a previous incident where the man had walked in through the back door) and it seems he is known to the pol
  18. No tin peas either! Thought they were vegetables not metal!
  19. It's your profile piccie Sue, I have to do a double take sometimes, yours and Carnis are so similar
  20. Hmmmm I daresay in this crazy world if Mum had hit them with her zimmer frame she would have been done for assault regardless of the fact they shouldn't have been there in the first place! I suppose she gets her spirit from her dad, he always maintained if he caught anyone in his house he would go in for the kill (he used to be a boxer in the navy)!

  22. Thanks everyone for your concern and recommendations. Mum used to have a dog, but now looking after one would be too much for her (I did suggest it last night, but know it's too much for her now) She is very stubborn and doesn't show her feelings, and will confront these gits when they come into her home, it really worries me that one day someone will clobber her. We suggested she come to live us on many occasion. We would give up our job and convert the garage on our bungalow into a granny flat for her, but no, Mum is insistent that she wants to stay in her own home, and to be fair althoug
  23. Just come off the phone to my Mum, having had a call from my brother informing me that her house has been broken into. This is at least the fourth time since my Dad died last year. On all occasions Mum has actually come face to face with the scumbags. Today one of them met her in the kitchen as they came through the house having broken in through a bedroom window (I say house, she lives in a bungalow) They muttered something, turned round and went back to one of the bedrooms. Mum uses a walking frame so by the time she got there they had scarpered through the window, but not before ransacki
  24. What a shock. One very talented lady. RIP
