  1. I love Stilton cheese, especially the Coston Basset variety - they do differ. I also enjoy a fine port but could never pour port into a hollowed out Stilton. Some years ago, when I was in Sweden, I discovered that they drank white port. That's the only time I've ever tasted it.
  2. Not me. I've only had my banjo for three years. I sit in my rocking chair on the veranda and play.
  3. Yes, there's nothing like a few beers to make you start talking gibberish. I'd love a pint of beer but since my gout's under control with medication I won't even look at it. Back in the days when you could go into a pub it was always soft drinks for me.
  4. That sounds just like the Waggon & Horses!
  5. ‘An uncouth or obnoxious person’ as defined by the dictionary. Sounds a lot like me actually!
  6. The enjoyment of food and wine is one of life's pleasures but only when taken in moderation.
  7. I used to be in the Young Conservatives many years ago so I do know what it was like to be ebullient!
  8. Have you never been to Leicester and driven down the Khyber Pass?
  9. ......but would you rather be in a comfortable lounge sipping a G&T with elegant people or in a spit and sawdust quaffing ale with a bunch of oiks?
  10. Meet a better class of people there though!
  11. Apologies. Ely is a city but Southwell is just a large village. It does have a Southwell City football club though! Edit: It does have a Town Council so I guess Southwell is a town.
  12. The thing about Ely is that it’s a largish town in the middle of nowhere. You never pass through it or go anywhere near it if you’re going anywhere. That’s why it’s retained its unique charm.
  13. I’ve only ever been there once and that was to look at a boat. The cathedral is very impressive. I like the bleakness of the fens especially in winter.
  14. ‘Is Ely a sinkhole?’ No it’s quite a nice town really!
  15. Looks like a 2 stroke but not sure of the model.
  16. National Provincial was around until 1970 when it merged with Nat. West.
  17. The beauty of ‘Prime’ is the rapid delivery. When my wife’s hairdryer broke I got a new one on the same day! I suppose it depends on how close you are to the shops. Out here the shops are too far away for minor purchases so it makes sense and is cost effective to pay £79 pa. Obviously if I was buying a car or a large domestic appliance I would want to view it first but for the more mundane everyday stuff, online for next day delivery is great. We get a weekly delivery of foodstuffs online from Morrison’s. We are already booked in for a pre Christmas delivery.
  18. I first joined by ‘accident’ and had to call them to get it cancelled. It was easy. They seemed to have have a department that dealt solely with such matters! I rejoined at the first lockdown and paid for a year upfront. I don’t use the other services available on Prime as they are of no interest. It’s been a godsend during this ‘difficult’ year. I sometimes wonder if we really need two cars now. I am becoming very much of a hermit though and I sometimes think it would be nice to go to the pub for a chat with friends. Two of us around the Christmas table will be very odd!
  19. I was just checking the things I bought on Amazon over the last 30 days and relating it to the amount of shopping trips I would have had to make. All very mundane household items, no luxuries. Batteries, door mat, spray paint, electric plugs, wool, wi fi extender, tap connecter, greenhouse vent opener, storage hooks, air filter for lawn tractor, spark plugs, kitchen canisters, electric kettle, toaster, light bulbs, pencils and a tweed baseball cap. When I look at the mileage I would have covered, the time wasted and the parking costs it just makes so much sense to shop on line considering
  20. If it's me you're alluding to I pay an annual fee of £79 for Prime. I use Amazon extensively now for just about anything except food. It's 10 miles round trip to Southwell, 20 to Newark and 26 to Nottingham so my car use this year has been negligible. Last month I spent £500 with Amazon on basic household needs which was much higher than usual. Today we received a front door mat and a pack of batteries, yesterday was an aerosol of paint. I've saved considerably more than £79 in fuel this year to date. I don't like going round shops so to have regular deliveries from Amazon is wonderful. I will
  21. That’s dreadful news Carni. My very best wishes to both of you for a rapid return to good health.
  22. They're big round bales now BK. Not the sort you can sit on. The Lincoln Red cattle at Fiskerton are eating them now. Their beef is superb. We did use the old style bales for seating years ago when we organised barn dances but that rural pursuit is no more sadly.
  23. I do have a banjo and I can play the theme from ‘Deliverence’ - but rather slowly. I do dress like a hillbilly though as Ben suggests.
