  4. Here's a cracking song that plonks me right back on the dreaded Bowers Avenue...i lived like Billy Fisher in those days'Ambrosia' was a buffer from all the crap.Waterford man excels himself here. Bonaparte Shandy always stuck with me.
  5. When Brew mentioned it..i thought they had been taken with a special lens..could be a bit of trickery!
  6. Colin i know they were deep..was a shooting range in there?.was never down there..but apparently the ale was always the right temperatureThis stood on Peacheys St.before Sandfield House. You can just see Amplitones Shop.
  7. Indeed Rog...and a snooker table. My first days pay after 'bottling up ' i put it on Red Alligator in the '68 Grand National..doubled me 1/3 !!
  8. Thanks for that Jill. I wonder if there are many other photos available?
  9. No matter how you dress it up..my Mother refusing to cut my wavy hair don't warrant a week of penance on my knees! Twisted..that's what they were! A bad piano is a bad piano..no matter who's twinkling the ivorys. I am only speaking for my 12 years of Nottm Catholic Education.
  10. Nah! Grew to dislike those frustrated nuns...and learnt that they were as about as far from God as Hitler with a can of zyklon B in his hand! Wicked and cruel place ...and they knew my Parents had split up..and did sod all in the way of comfort...what i did realise in kneeling for a week at 11 years of age is that many hide behind God to inflict cruelty to those less able than themselves! My way of living has bugger all to do with Letters to the Corinthians!!!!!
  11. Pray..why Phil? I'll get back on topic in a bit and post a WW2 photo.
  12. Strange what an old photograph can do....not thought about this area for a long time-When i left my junior school (1972) this above photo evokes a strange period in my life..recalling the most trivial thoughts: I bought a Matchbox beach buggy from a shop pictured near the Morris Oxford. The shop sold those spit tattoos of the Harlem Globetrotters. An elderly man who was a POW in Burma used to get the 31 every Tuesday ...he went to Mapperley Hospital for treatment. After my confirmation in the local church.. i was given an orange Aero bar..(today the kids get £100's). I
  13. The singing is very nice..my friends house is right behind the Church .and last time...even though hung over i listened to the Gospel singing whilst out on the deck. I seldom go to mass anymore...i pray when i feel like it..and often light a candle for a particular person or purpose. Many of the churchgoers here are -cliqeuy and look down there noses.. Whatever the denomination...no matter ..peace & love.
  14. That explains it then phil . Had just left a lady friends house on St.Christopher St.after a heavy session and a bad bonce...talk about juxta....drifting across Colwick road the serene singing and me limping towards Sneinton mkt for a £5 breakfast to get some soakage!
  15. Nottingham was messing about with this area for 30 years. The garage next to the co-op, hotels and pubs demolished , along with cafes and restaurants. City Gate was built and The Strathdon Hotel and Toll Bar. Underpasses were built and banks. Now its an Hotel a new cop shop (hardly open). Also pedesrian crossing has altered umpteen times.
  16. A series of photographs documenting the County during WW2.Staff and nurses from Vale Brook Lodge and City Hospital fill sandbags..just off Hucknall rd.after war was declared. This poiceman takes the hand of a child who has been evacuated to Nottingham..pictured in 1940 at the bus station.Bombed out children arrive at Bingham Station to be billeted safely.
  17. I can see Catfans point and Jills...but when you come from a home that is damp..can't hold wallpaper..outside loo...friend embarresment...pokey slum...a flat like that was a fine home. I offer..if they were built exactly like they were..but gated and sold as private apartments...they would be still standing...they were just 12 floors or so lower than vic centre flats. Nottm City Council have always been guilty of lumping folk together and creating ghettos..quiet and working tenants apply for transfers- so they can get some sleep ..to get up and pay the rent . Not saying everyone
  18. Bought some Signal Red in there for a job on Albany Rd. Morris Wallpaper & Paints co. on Angel Row, think on my 345 bus days to Mansfield...there was one in Hucknall..the High st?
  19. I'd say so oz( happy easter mate). When did Queen Vic get moved to the embankment..'53-'55? That area was known as the plate market. Used to walk to school in those fogs. Remember the TV ad? "Don't dazzle..dip your headlights". Edit:jonab...was the kodak place near the Badger Box pub,
  20. The DER telly was installed. And no slot TV for us! This song etched in time for me ...and i still am in touch with Jackie Lee and she is in great health..poptastic!
  21. Hasn't changed at all..finished school there in 1972..floored 3 lads on Corporation Oaks. Brings back memories...most of them crap..the chase pub gone Malcolm? Nice job-cheers.
  22. Did we find a postable map..the one of Butlers Hill kept vanishing.
  23. This was a toe-tapper and recall Jimmy Young giving it a whirl in between the Shifting Drifting Sands. Formed by Johnnie Pearson: Sounds Orchestral.
  24. Love it Catfan. I hope i was the total opposite..knew a driver had to get off. Only once did a driver cross me..the late Don Green from BFI...taking a box to Greenwich..his trick was to back under hard whilst i was in the trailer with a small lift truck Once too often... He was a 'regular' man when it came to going to the stalls..so i removed the light bulb over trap one...stretched pallet wrap over the bowl and put down seat... and waited...saw the overalls draped on the deck...under the door ..and i rammed a brush handle in the door handle! Came back after lunch..he was 'in tr
  25. Yes it was that tight! One evening i had to run up Wilford Lane..we were doing The Ruddigore and a lorry had got stuck..talk about "The Ghostly White".
