In 1774 The Duke of Newcastle was made the Recorder of Nottingham.To celebrate his appointment he held a banquet for 90 guests at Thurland Hall.

This at a time when Nottingham saw cheese riots and protests from the Framework knitters and other workers who were finding it impossible to feed their families on the pittance paid for their labours.

'On the white tablecloths being drawn back,the tables were seen to be covered in a huge variety of fruits and a magnificent selection of wines and spirits.'

The civic dignitaries and noblemen then sat down to the following...

Where on earth did they get all them tureens of turtle from?

Same place as the Ragout of pullets, I expect..................way past 'best before' date....................

Didn't see any 'booze' on the menu,that would have been interesting.

The 'elite' still throw bashes like this,they just keep them quiet.That is untill it's a 'royal do' and they really stick it to the 'peasants'.
