Nice bike ride down to the upper river Witham yesterday where I have permission to fish to see if the river is fishable yet

at normal levels the river is about three feet deep and fifteen feet wide but yesterday the river was at least ten to twelve feet deep and fifty feet wide and really fast flowing, So might be able to have a go at fishing it next week, (weather permitting)

I’ve just been over that Witham bridge on the way to Navenby this afternoon Rog. I don’t think there’ll be much fishing there for a while!  If it’s fishing you want I’ve got a 100yds long pond at the end of our field which has appeared over the last few days. I’ve just got to stock it! Last time that happened we sailed model boats on it.

Scotwater bridge at normal level, I think this is the bridge you went over Phil near Norton Disney, private fishing there, you need to be a member of Collingham AA to fish it and it's one of those clubs that aren't looking for new members at this time (or any time from what I've been told) the stretch I can fish is about a mile upstream from here at Stapleford

Did you buy any antiques from Navenby or just visiting, have you been to Mrs Smiths cottage yet for a look around or called in at the tea rooms for a cuppa and a slice of cake?

Went to view the antiques Rog. Came through Stapleford and your village. Also went to see the church at Temple Bruer which always fascinates me being in the middle of nowhere.

There is a Temple Bruer winery on the Angas Plains near where we live. It specialises in in preservative free and low preservative wines.

I wonder if there is any connection?

The main connection between Lincolnshire and Australia is the sailor and navigator Mathew Flinders. He came from Donnington near Boston so I doubt he ever went to the obscure village of Temple Bruer. I used to go green laning with my son in that area in my Landrover until it was nicked as so many Landrovers are!

The original Temple Bruer was a Knights Templar 13C church of which only the tower remains in a farmyard. The nearby church of John the Baptist dates from 1873 and stands in the middle of nowhere. It used to serve a population of around 200. I’ve been exploring the area for years as my family has roots in the villages around Sleaford. It’s typical bleak Lincolnshire countryside but with lots of history.

(Update on the new venture) Went down to the river this morning as a try out, tied the rod and landing net pole to the bike like I used to when I was a kid, few bits of tackle and a reel in my back pack and set off, twelve minutes bike ride to the river, lift the bike over the locked gate and climbed over hinge side, walked along the bank for about thirty feet and started to set up, problem 1, I need a bank stick with rod rest on, 2, be good to have something to sit on, 3 take an old towel to wipe my hands on, 4, forgot to take the landing net (doh), as it was the river is still too high and fast flowing so more or less unfishable but the point of the exercise was to find any snags in my setup which I did, happy with my efforts though so looking forward to lower river levels and get some fishing done

For fishing our nearby canal and the Trent, in decent weather, I use my Elephant bike. The front carrier is big enough to carry a folding stool and cushion. Large rear panniers carry tackle, flask and lunch. Rods etc,. carried in a holdall over my shoulder.

I used to tie my wicker fishing basket to the frame of my bike that carried the rear wheel, all the gear you need and a seat.

I used to do the same with my basket and rod holdall but all I want to do now is set up the gear, do a bit of fishing for half hour or so then move down stream to another likely looking spot and fish that for half hour or so then move again, at the moment I tie the rod and landing net pole to the cross bar of my bike and put the tackle in a backpack, taking a full size seatbox would be too cumbersome so I'm  going to try one of these

I could chuck all the gear in the car and drive to the river with all the specialist tackle you see on the big rivers but all I want to do is roam the river bank and fish in likely spots like I did as a kid on the Fairham brook

The river level has started to drop now so if the weather stays dry for a few days I might be able to have a couple of hours fishing next mid week, fingers crossed

(Waterproof skin Phil) and yes I have waterproof jacket and trousers but with only being twelve minutes bike ride from home is it worth taking waterproofs with me?
