bamber 128
Courtesy of google here's a short(ish) article about Nottingham City Police's Captain Popkess. Hard to think of any his modern counterparts arousing the interest of the press down-under. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1301&dat=19590503&id=LYNWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=6uQDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6403,7650309

bamber 128
From memory it was on High Pavement. It was a typical piece of movie makers' geography. I do wonder if the City Police chose the location for the demonstration because it was almost directly opposite the Nottinghamshire Constabulary HQ at the Shire Hall. City Police at the time referred to their shire counterparts as "sheep dippers".

ValuerJim 277
What was the make of the car? It looks like something out of a 1950s NYPD movie?
philmayfield 6,140
I remember back in 1959 going to a protest demonstration in the Market Square to get Popkess reinstated after he had been suspended by the watch committee. He had launched an investigation into corruption by labour councilors. His suspension became a national scandal and he was subsequently reinstated. He retired not long afterwards and never set foot in Nottingham again. Details can be found on the Internet.

Geoff _Sleath 1
Captain Popkess's son was at Henry Mellish school in Bulwell at the same time as I was though he was probably a couple of years older. That would be early 1950s (I left in 1956 at 16)
