Regarding Edgar Hooley, he was appointed County surveyor to Nottinghamshire County Council in 1889. He developed and patented tarmac in 1902 and called his company Tar Macadam. Because all this happened while he was among the Nottingham people and breathing the Nottingham air he was a Honourary Citizen of Nottingham. So there.

Ok ok Michael. I'll apologise again!

I shouldn't have listened to my resident 'expert'. Mind you, if you want to know about airport runways then he's yer man.

There must be a multitude of inventions that we never hear of , such as the drugs, ointments, medicines and cosmetics which have been developed at such places as Boots, The University Hospital and QMC etc.

Also at Ericssons / Plessey, the fully all electronic telephone exchange. I worked on this in the early 60's and helped install the very first at Ambergate in 1966.
