Woodhouse

I'm just being curious but puzzled too, and cannot find anything like a decent meaning on this woodhouse thing on this site or on the steam search engines.

 

There are lots of Woodhouses in Nottinghamshire, but not a lot elsewhere to my knowledge. I dont think I need to give a list, but Annesley is the closest to where my parents lived. I never knew that there was a Wollaton Woodhouse *  

 

Why are these places called Woodhouse? Could the word Wood have more meaning? Wodehouses where everyone was painted blue? 

 

If anyone knows, you lot do.

The most common explanation I have heard is that the house or houses were made of wood - but surely many houses would have been made of wood in olden days? It would not have been that unusual even in towns.

 

Could have been a house in a wood, I suppose?

Then there's Woodhouse Eaves in Leicestshire.............Mansfield Woodhouse.........pronounced Wood'us.......by the locals..........did a bit of 'Courting' there and Blid'uth.........loved Blid'uth bottoms...............lol.

As I understand it, it is something to do with the old English 'wudu' meaning house by the wood.

 

This would fit with Mansfield Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves, but like you I cannot find a lot of evidence one way or the other.

Yes, it seems the most likely. All the various Woodhouses were situated in what would originally have been Sherwood Forest, which came right down to the edge of old Nottingham. This would also have included the ones in Yorkshire. Woodhouse Eaves is in Charnwood Forest.

 

Never heard of Wollaton Woodhouse before, Radford Woodhouse nearby of course.

According to Ancestry website, the origins are from Old English - wudu meaning wood and  hus meaning house.  So not much change really

There's also a Woodhouse on the outskirts of Sheffield too.

Old English - wudu  - That is wood in the sense of forest or woodland, I guess? If so, that makes sense.

 

...or is the word the same for wood as in plank of wood?

From what I understand it will translate as both but by adding house it translates to house near.by the wood. But it is only my opinion
