  1. I can remember the Air Hostess pub being built on Burnside Grove. I was one of the first pupils at Tollerton Primary School when it opened with Mrs Gretton as the Head My brothers were at Plumtree primary long before it went private and remember the Forge Stores there before it became I think a solicitors. Dad used to play cricket at Plumtree. Always have to open the windows on my car and shout under the bridge along from there up to Bradmore as we used to. That’s a great road.
  2. Phil can you remember that mad Frenchman that used to fly upside down very low to the runway at the airshow at Tollerton ? Think he flew too low one year and then was no more. We used to walk down Tollerton Lane as kids to see the show. Maybe the airshow inspired my love of aviation cos that’s what I went into.
  3. Ooh David a “them” and “those” example.
  4. Phil, my brothers travelled from Tollerton to Mellish so that was quite a way.
  5. Those maps were fascinating David and helped you to “be” in the story
  6. I fell in love with Tolkien in my teens and passed my books on to my daughter who was also captivated. They can be a bit heavy going as they switch about a bit in different chapters as there are so many characters especially in the Lord of the Rings. If you want to read smaller fables of his try The Adventures of Tom Bombadil or the Farmer of Ham to get you into Tolkien. Love the films.
  7. The only problem with cutting grass now is if we get frosts, although grass is very tough stuff as we saw in our 40deg summer on the other end of the scale. I’m leaving mine for now as it’s quite muddy still but you could have a go on a high setting just to tidy it.
  8. Phil, did you get the book I recommended ?
  9. He would be off to San Jose if he knew the way
  10. Beekay, maybe buses, trains and bicycles are not everyone’s cup of tea but you guys like them which is great. I’m now into gardening although Mrs B doesn’t mean I’m Mrs Blossom but also that’s not everyone’s cup of tea and can be a chore for some people. Whatever rocks your boat is fine big bro. I think as well that people move on and have other commitments in life.
  11. Love that film too, Katherine Ross on that bicycle. The lady has been married 5 times and 34 years to Sam Elliott, he of the gravelly voice.
  12. My daughter works for John Lewis, they are so good to their staff so it must rub off and make them motivated to help customers. Great company.
  13. I see that the Syrians are now bombing the earthquake area as well. Unbelievable.
  14. Hope he’s ok. Met at the last get together, what a gent.
  15. I would love my mother to stop for the weekend. Sadly she’s not with us anymore.
  16. Alpha, the word “those” doesn’t feature in my husband’s vocabulary at all and it infuriates me. I never comment though as it stems back to his dreadful education, he has dyslexia which wasn’t recognised then and his parents never picked him up on grammar like I did with my own children. My father was an absolute stickler for grammar so we were corrected too which was a little annoying at the time but it worked! He has so many other great attributes that I’ve got past caring whether his grammar is correct or not. I’m lucky to have him.
  17. It always was a nice pub Phil. There used to be a post office opposite and I met up with the girl who lived there and I used to go on the school bus with last December. Have always kept in touch with her but we happened to be in the Lakes and they live in Glasgow so we met up at Gretna. Lots of chatting! Haven’t seen her since school bus days.
  18. The house I lived in at Cropwell Butler in my teens has just gone on the market for 525K. My dad bought it from new for 9 and 1/2. Maybe he should have held on to it. Looks as though the people we sold it to did keep hold of it as the decor is very retro 70’s on the pictures.
  19. Beekay, my brother always used to call me lil sis. Awwww. I do actually have a block of wood between the carpet and the floor in my car as I couldn’t reach the pedals when I first got it!
  20. Beekay, this was 15 years ago so maybe don’t look like the pic now, what do you mean about the “wanted posters “ big bro ?
  21. Phil, this is me in the Lynx helicopter simulator at Yeovil anbout 15 years ago. Unfortunately I crashed into HMS Marlborough. Maybe you need to try the sim before you go for real. It’s very different from “normal a/c flying.
  22. Loppylugs you are right in that as you get older you do lose your balance, particularly when you turn too quickly. Glad you’re ok anyway. Jill, I’ve fallen over a few cats in my time and trod on a few tails! We used to have a ginger cat that used to “snake” in front of you all the time.
  23. Isn’t it great to see all the bulbs coming up, I have some snowdrops and crocus out already. Hellebores too. I have had to clear some of my Vinca (periwinkle) out as it has taken over somewhat, one of those survivors and invaders but it does give some variety in the Winter and is flowering now too.
