We have just got back from an epic valentines champagne afternoon tea on Great Central. I couldn’t fault it in any way. So much cake we brought some home with us. nice to do something a bit different.

nonnaB our family had 3 wedding breakfasts at the Chestnuts - ours, my brothers and my auntie. They were very good and at some point your husband must have been the manager. We used to get our meat from the very good butchers in Radcliffe or steak from the farm at Bassingfield where they used to hang it. Until one day we found maggots (yuck) and then stopped going there.

Nonna what was the restaurant you had in Radcliffe called ? Think it could have been where I had my wedding reception to my first husband in 1977? Maybe not but worth asking the question.

On another note West Bridgford announced as the 13th poshest place in England. Always called bread and lard island as you couldn’t afford to eat anything else after you had bought a house there. I had some really happy years at school there but we weren’t residents.

I wonder if the space under Burtons is still there? Used to love Burtons as a child and always had our turkey from there every year. Remember my father forget to order the Christmas Eve pick up one year and all they had left was an unplucked one. We must have spent hours that night sorting it out. What was the furniture shop near there on the Poultry called ? My brother worked there for a while.

Jill, my daughter was there from 1997 onwards so yes the teacher v nun teaching ratio was very different to the 60’s. It is now a part of the Loughborough Endowed Schools and consequently has more varied subject opportunities. My daughter was very lucky to have some amazing teachers who encouraged her love of art and history which she subsequently took a degree in at Nottingham. Now I have my own tour guide whenever we go on holidays anywhere. Good news about the cats.

Jill, my daughter went to Our Ladies Convent in Loughborough. I think during her time there they had mellowed a bit. Personally I don’t think she would have coped in a bigger establishment as she was at a very small primary school before and did have anxiety even about going there for the first year although some of her friends were already there. As a caring environment it was ideal and she still sees long lasting friends from those years, even her recorder teacher still keeps in touch. The fees crippled me as a one parent family at that point but it was worth it. It’s difficult to gauge how

I think this is a common trend this year, my son who is 39 paid £400 + last year and his renewal quoted over 1K this year. Even with shopping around he couldn’t get it below £700. Not good.

I agree totally about Monty Don, not exactly charismatic although I enjoyed his series of gardens in Italy. Think that was more the affection for Italy that I have though! Barnsdale is definitely worth a visit and Geoff’s son Is a lovely guy. It is nice that he has carried on the legacy. The cafe is good too. Didn’t get my onion sets planted in modules today. Tomorrow is another day as they say.

Please remember we are only at the start of February peeps and the weather will undoubtedly change to being cold again shortly. Broad beans are pretty hardy and I am going to put my onion sets into modules tomorrow to start them off and then they’ll be in the greenhouse till they start sprouting and rooting ready to plant in my polytunnel. Jobs to do for now will be preparing the ground and adding compost or fertilisers if you can actually get onto the soil, it’s so wet!

This is a Cessna bird dog that my friend and her partner lovingly completely renovated a couple of years ago. It was a lot of work but definitely worth it. Pictured at Bidford Gliding Club where we always have an annual reunion with fun things like target flour bombing.

Phil, you made me laugh when you said that the insurance company paid up over the odds. Never mind the fact that you nearly killed yourself! In the face of adversity there’s always a bonus. We had an a/c go off the runway at Dinard once, apparently it was at the time one of the longest runways in France.

Widnes station is supposed to have been where Paul Simon wrote Homeward Bound. Love that song, on my playlist along with lots of others of his and Art’s.

Phil, didn’t one of the scholars of St. Hughes college throw himself off a turret back in the day ? I can remember walking past it with Mum down to the farm past St. Peters church to feed the pigs and going on a guide camp in the grounds of Tollerton Hall. I was in the choir at the church and can remember doing maypole dancing at the church fete behind the old rectory. Tollerton will always be home to me, funny how you think about the places that mean so much to you in later life eh.

It were all fields when I lived there. Grrrrrr
