  1. Thanks Mick but still haven't got it.?!! They are two separate establishments. Why put Trent in brackets when the Portland Building isn't at Trent Poly? It's Portland Building at Nottngham Uni. You know - that big place on UNIVERSITY Boulevard. Lots of big buildings on a large grassy campus between Dunkirk, Lenton and Beeston. Trent Uni was Trent Poly and is in the BIG CITY. At the end of Shakespeare Street back then anyway. Another place. Is it Me? Must be the Virgo in me . . .
  2. I'm jealous Hippogirl - I was going to ask if anyone went to the Wings gig on 9th Feb 1972! Not me :-( I understand it was at very short (hours) notice, and word rattled around the campus like wildfire. How did you get to hear about it? How was the gig?
  3. Good idea giving the Portland Building it's own thread but it should read NOTTINGHAM Uni not Trent. Anyhow, I remember many gigs there: Beefheart, Kevin Ayers, Supertramp (pre- Crime of the Century), Stray, Caravan (several times, Rennaissance (also several times), Mott The Hoople, Curved Air, Suzy Quatro. I'm sure I'll remember more in due course! I also saw Wishbone Ash and Roxy Music but they had to play in the Sports Centre cos they were too big for the Students Union. I saw Vinegar Joe too but that really was at Trent Poly. 10cc too.
  4. Brighton's West Pier is a great place to witness a murmuration of starlings. There are thousands of them!
  5. So sorry to have read this. He was a great manager and also a great honorary Nottinghamian. Much respect to him, his family and all County fans. SR
  6. I was there that night, and many others. That was also the stage where I got kissed on the cheek by Sonja Kristina :-) Good posting Firbeck - love the Portland Building memories.
  7. I don't think so. The Rose Grower was originally mentioned over in Aspley etc Estates/Pubs Closing Down as Bill the landlord came from the Cocked Hat. This is a more specific thread.
  8. Hi baldrick, Thanks for the info and keeping us up to date. From your posts I think I must have been drinking with you (and Malc & Brian) in the early days of the Rose Grower. Where did you come from on your bikes? I used the pub from it's opening (I was 17) and I too played darts and the fruit machine for tanners. I lived in Bankfield Drive when the pub was planned but had moved to Arundel Drive by the time it opened. I guess you are in Bankfield or Sandringham if it's at the end of your road? Chrres, SR
  9. Well I suppose they could do it in the middle of the night when there's nobody around . . . ;-)
  10. Yeah - for some reason people think that if they put their single headlamp on full beam the candlepower makes them legal. Can't believe you don't wear a seatbelt. I mean, what's there to lose?
  11. It has to be purchased first. Does anyone know if the for sale signs are up still? Any name on them?
  12. And I can't see it in Savills auction history either: http://62.105.94.133/Nott_previous_auctions.asp
  13. I haven't been able to find out any more about the future of the Rose Grower apart from these links which indicates it went for auction by Savills in May. It's no longer advertised on the Savills site. http://www.egpropertylink.com/Assets/GetAs...x?ItemID=857844 http://microsite.businesslinksolutions.co....vertID=10668018
  14. I used to go to the Musters in the mid 70's to see pub rock bands: Bees Make Honey, Ducks Deluxe and Brinsley Schwartz spring to mind. Also Kilburn and the High Roads which was Ian Drury's band pre-Blockheads.
  15. !clapping! I only he were English . . . .
  16. One thousand and one cleans a big, big carpet for less than half a crown!
  17. And pinched later still by the Magpies in exhultation of Jimmy Sirrell, probably for avoiding having to apply for re-election to the league!
  18. Shouldn't this be moved to the Nottingham Smells thread? ;-)
  19. Hi Val, Thanks for the photos. Of course we were well behaved! Here is further confirmation on closure from another site: Rose Grower on Beerintheevening It would seem that not all landlords were as good as your Mum and Dad. I wonder how many others there were in between. Following all the local opposition to the pub being built in the 60's, I emailed the current chair of the Bramcote Hills Community Association to see if they are opposing the change of use and want to save a valuable local resource. There has as yet been no reply . . .
  20. I remember that lake well. 4 of us took out two boats. I was in a boat with Alan Carter (who lived in near Beeston Station, went to Bramcote Tech and later Plesseys) who insisted on trying to rock our boat to it's limits. I tried to counter his rocking and of course the inevitable happened and we went in. We pulled the boat to the side and did a runner, soaked to the skin. His suffering was greater though as he lost his glasses for good in the lake. Happy days! Are you out there Alan? Do you remember?
