  1. The funny thing about that tour list is how sensible it was geographically. With modern transport now you'll see a tour that goes Southampton, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Newcastle, Bristol, Leeds, London again then North again to Sheffield.
  2. That's really the Rag Queen from 1969???????
  3. What happens now is that freshers have a whole load of events during their first year. 7 legged race from pub to pub in town, snowflake ball etc to introduce then to the idea of Karnival. Then, many of the 2nd years do fundraising challenges such as walking up Kilimanjaro, marathons, cycling in Asia etc which is where most of the money is raised. Hence it now being about the whole year rather than a single week as in yesteryear.
  4. In 2001 or so I employed a medical student who was that year's chairman of the Nottingham University Karnival committee. They broke the world record for rag week fund raising with something like £440,000 if I remember correctly. They have continued to be the most successful 'rag week' in the country, year by year, breaking the record again in 2011 and then again in 2012 with £1.6 million raised last year. Karnival is a year round fund raiser rather than the older single week series of events.
  5. I'm not totally convinced that global warming/climate change is necessarily down to man's activities. Claiming 97% of scientists believe it to be so is a wild guess. Firstly, nearly all the research grants in this area are given in order to produce statistics that prove it to be so. that means that, irrespective of the truth, the vast majority of publications will be 'pro global warming'. That doesn't necessarily represent a fair view of where the balance of scientific proof is. All studies have been over such a short time (grants are awarded on a 1-3 year basis so conclusions have to be reach
  6. I didn't believe in global warming until I noticed something strange was happening to Marmite. Years ago it was really sticky and you could always find just one more scraping somewhere in the jar, time and time again. Now, and this must be down to warmer weather, the sides of the jar are clean when you run out as it seems to have a softer consistency. I've yet to see a more important or convincing change due to global warming than that.
  7. A couple of things spring to mind about the difference between vinyl and CD. Firstly, CD's are mostly mastered differently in a way that makes them more suited to playing over the radio. This led to the so-called 'loudness wars' where it was hard to pick out individual instruments. Listening for extended periods of time actually became tiring. Vinyl is mastered far more accurately with less added 'loudness', apart from having higher thresholds. Interestingly, despite the fact that it's impossible to hear above the 192kbps mp3 cutoff, there have been some interesting studies. One found, by meas
  8. If Mandela was a terrorist then so were the French resistance.
  9. A comedian the other night came out with a great line about the unemployed being forced to do unpaid work at Poundland to increase their self-esteem. 'How good is it for your self-esteem to know that everything there is worth a pound except you?'
  10. There's enough of an explanation on his website as posted above #24. Maybe you could look at that and explain what more you think you need to know and why you still think it's some sort of scam. Of course it could all just be an elaborate ruse to tie a few people's email addresses and ages to their postcodes. A lot of work inventing a whole, easily verified, persona just to get that I'd say. His credentials do suggest he has a slight inkling of what he's after and how to do online research. "Paul has over seven years experience of working with Geographic Information (GI) within academia. Dur
  11. There are underground car parks in Nottingham City Centre where you can park for free for up to 24 hours. I never pay to park in the City Centre.
  12. I'll tell you why. Because you're being rude to a newcomer and I think that should be called out. You can doubt whatever you want but IMO you should keep it to yourself. There's no need, or, again IMO, a place, for your behaviour. It's rude, unpleasant and unnecessary.
  13. If you were even slightly acquainted with the principles of such research you'd know that the last thing you should do is explain the methodology behind it before people have completed the questionnaire as it can influence the responses. Paul has repeatedly suggested that anyone wanting more information was free to email him. Have you bothered to ask him by email what you want to know or are you just happier sitting in a corner criticising the world? Your continued use of phrases such as 'If his research is genuine' are offensive. You must have been betrayed at every turn in your life to be th
  14. Do you not think it's rather rude to discuss Paul in the 3rd person and impugn his work and motives in this way? What exactly qualifies you to judge his methodology and the the aims of his research? Having a daughter at Uni? Well that makes me qualified to comment on astro-physics because I know a rocket scientist (genuinely, he lives in Blenau Ffestiniog now he's retired) doesn't it. The link posted above proves that he is genuinely involved in research at Nottingham Uni ( despite your immediate assumption that it was a lie) and his credentials suggest he has more insight into how to perform
  15. Bupa covers pre-existing conditions as do many private healthcare providers but it does cost more.
  16. Wasn't there one called 'strip the willow' or something of the sort?
  17. My first wife's father looked into buying the chip shop when the Meadows were re-built. His inquiries yielded the fact that there were once 13 chip shops either on, or just off, Arkwright Street. I also bought a fair bit of stuff from the Army surplus shop there back in the 70's.
  18. I wish I'd watched this years ago. Any other obscure films made in Nottingham I might have?
  19. There's one of these organic wholefood shops in West Bridgford. On a Sunday they pile all the remaining veg in trays neatly in their skip as they have new deliveries on a Monday. My daughter and I used to then fetch the trays of veg and take them to the Sumac centre for people to help themselves. An example week. 5 trays of baking potatoes ( still perfect), 3 trays of aubergines ( fresh as you'd like) and more trays of carrots than we could be bothered collecting.
  20. The one that sticks in my mind was a Disney nature film about the moose or elk or something.
  21. Anyone know what the building in the opening scene is/was?
  22. The film can now be downloaded from http://www.filefactory.com/file/1qhalfkr05kt/They_Knew_Mr_Knight_avi As it's not available to buy anywhere, I don't see any issues with copyright so feel free to download it.
  23. I have a copy on my PC taken from a VHS although I didn't know it was shot here so have never watched it. I'll put it somewhere online so anyone who wants to can download it. It's 850MB BTW.
  24. A guy called Chris Ketz who ran a Footlocker store in Wisconsin added to this email when it first did the rounds Chapter 1: How to Properly Line Up Your Fourth Putt Chapter 2: How to Hit a Nike from the Rough When You Hit a Titleist from the Tee Chapter 3: How to Avoid the Water When You Lie Eight in a Bunker Chapter 4: How to Get More Distance Off the Shank Chapter 5: When to Give the Ranger the Finger Chapter 6: Using Your Shadow on the Greens to Maximize Earnings Chapter 7: Crying and How to Handle it Chapter 8: Proper Excuses for Drinking Beers Before 10 a.m. Chapter 9: How to Rat
