  1. It looks like a fob for a pocket watch chain to me. I assume the initials would be that of the wearer.
  2. I read that Germany refused to supply Italy with equipment it had, facmasks and the like so understandably Italy were not best pleased. I think that is what RR was referring to. Odd how China stepped in and sent the equipment that Italy desperately needed.
  3. Welcome YeOlde. My mother’s family were from the Arnold area. Grandmothers family was Ellis and the family ran Ellis bakers which was where Birds now is. My grandfather was the youngest of 5 having 4 sisters. The family name was Clarke and they were a Daybrook family. My Great grandfather was a van driver, horse drawn of course for Jacobees lace and eventually became head of the stables for the firm living in a company owned house next to the stables. My mother was born over her parents shop on Front Street now a hairdressers. In about 1983 shortly before his death Grandad was staying at
  4. On the 13th March I posted ‘Boris didn’t look well to me. I’d get checked out.‘
  5. I received a letter today informing me I have to renew my driving licence. I knew it was due. You can do it on line costing £14.00 or at the post office £21.50p. Seems quite a price hike for not using the internet.
  6. I intend having my 2 grandsons over to stay with us. They’ve finished school and will be careful in the next week or so with contact others. Mums working from home so assuming they’re well they’re coming to us. Maybe for a few days or weeks. See how it goes. I’m in a rural location and there are nice walks over quiet footpaths and the river nearby. Easy to avoid close contact. I’m being careful, wearing gloves when out, washing regularly and avoiding close contact but until ordered to do so have not locked myself in and don’t intend to. I spoke at length yesterday, face to face that is fr
  7. Assuming it’s true 750ml Dettol £19.99 500ml £14.99. We need ration books. A few years ago I walked into a certain shop in Sneinton. The 2 guys behind the counter had the charity donation container, one of those tube ones, on the counter shaking and poking with a knife. They clearly hadn’t noticed me walk-in and looked very furtive. Went on about needing some change for the till and would put it back. I used to call in for samosas. I told them it was a disgrace, illegal and have never been back there again. People will always take advantage of adversity. Old as time itself. Spivs, bl
  8. My wife and myself have not bought a single extra item. Nothing. We refuse to be drawn into the current idiocy. It may be a mistake we regret but at least our conscience is 100% clear. I am not the least bit worried about the current situation. I have some health issues and ‘chronic pain’, the by-product of an injury and woke up one day with the realisation that no amount of worry, stress, sulking, depression etc made a jot of difference to the situation. It will remain exactly the same. Common sense and follow advice. Concern yes but I won’t worry. Que Sera sera.
  9. LizzieM. This must have been in the 1970’s when my mum was a smoker. She said to me one day that she’d sent her zippo lighter back for repair as it was still guaranteed and was a bit miffed it hadn’t been returned several months on. After some investigation it turned out she’d sent it to Boston in Lincolnshire not USA. Never saw it again.
  10. The serious rumour squad has told me today that one of the Doctors and a receptionist at my local surgery are positive for the virus. I assume you use the same surgery as me Phil Mayfield. Get well soon but stay away from the Docs.
  11. Not only were the beams brute force jammed but also engineers worked out how to bend the beams, the fear was that simply jamming them then the Germans would change the frequency and it would take time to find the new frequency and readjust the the jamming equipment. Professor R V Jones book ‘most secret war) details the battle with the beams.
  12. My daughter in law is Slovakian, been here a long time but makes frequent visits to family. The family are close to the Hungarian boarder so she flys in and out of Budapest which is her nearest airport. She’s just returned here yesterday from a family visit and had a hell of a job as anyone crossing the boarder out of Slovakia (Slovakian subject that is) can return but must self isolate for 2 weeks and failing to do so results in a fine. Her friend could not drive her as she has to work so couldn’t afford 2 weeks off. In the end she borrowed a car and left it near the airport and a friend who
  13. You have a fair point there AG. I am in the danger age, just, but a long term underlying health condition with my immune system means I really need to avoid this virus as I rather like Christmas and would like to see another. We look after grandchildren and pick them up from school a few times a week. So if I isolate either voluntarily or forced what happens if my wife carries on. She could potentially infect me. she has already cancelled going to a concert today due to this very reason.
  14. I got carried away on another thread but that prompted me to recall, among other things, the record player situated in the top hall at Berridge during my time there 1960-66. This was used to play music when going in for morning assembly and also dancing, drama etc. I still cringe at drama and having to be a tree in the wind getting stronger to the tune of ‘in the hall of the mountain king from the Peer Gynt suite. A bit of research and it was I’m sure a Coomber and Sons model made specially for schools.
  15. Point taken Jonah but turn on the tv or radio, bbc news etc etc and you’ll find an abundance of information probably more relevant to specific locations.
  16. Surely one of the joys of this forum is the way it drifts and takes diverse directions. It soon comes back to the topic heading so does it matter. I think every thread on here drifts. I’ve recently been told off for quoting now this. The joy is going.
  17. I will agree wholeheartedly with your remark about being careful what you say about people. You've clearly taken offence at mick2me's comment but I didn't see the remark as malicious or offensive but almost an attribute. I did strongly complain when someone made allegations of abuse by a named teacher as if these allegations had never been proved in a court then they were libleous but real names are fair game I'm afraid.
  18. The noun virus has a Latin root, but is one of the few nouns that has no plural in Latin. It occurs only in the singular. The English plural viruses (which adheres to the standard rules for forming plurals) is the only way to make the noun virus plural. You were correct first time Col.
  19. Do you know Jill, I cannot recall for certain who accompanied the Hymns in morning assembly. I know there was the very large book, at least 4 feet by 2 of a thick paper sheets hanging on the right hand side of the stage with all the words on it. I sometimes got the job of going first thing to change it to ‘that’ mornings hymn. I have a vague recollection that a woman was bought in to play the piano some times but it’s a bit of a blank. I’ll think on it. I know you don’t recall the stage at all. I remember there was a record player in light coloured wood with a large round speaker covered in br
  20. Beekay. If you look on eBay, there’s a Raleigh Roma scooter on there, item number 164084502474. £1800 if you fancy it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raleigh-Roma-scooter-Bianchi-Orsetto/164084502474?hash=item263432cfca:g:FgkAAOSw8dJeSVkZ Also a Raleigh Runabout currently bidding at £1300+. Seems silly money as there are numerous non original parts fitted, lights, saddle etc. Should have kept mine. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raleigh-RM6-Moped/283804149974?hash=item42140ba8d6:g:wHcAAOSw-B9eX4Aj
  21. Can’t really say why they fetch such high prices other than perhaps the relative rarity or owning and riding something you either had when younger or fancied but couldn’t afford at the time. The Raleigh Runabout I had wasn’t that bad really. The weak spot was the transmission which was poor. It consisted of a V belt drive and standard chain. It needed greasing up weekly, even every time out which of course most people didn’t bother with. The rest was nothing more than a beefed up bike really. It even had a cycle type calliper brake on the front. Rubbish but they weren’t very fast. The eng
  22. Like DJ Col as far as religion goes, live and let live. Im total atheist but love church architecture and hymns. Berridge to thank for the latter. Personally I think the ‘anything political’ thread was a mistake on this Nottstalgia forum. It’s just not the venue but I see it amuses some so just skip it. But if they bring in an ‘anything religious‘ heading I’m off.
  23. A half decent Raleigh or Mobylette (same thing) will sell for £500 plus. A decent Raleigh Supermatic nearer a grand. NSU Quickly will fetch even more. The Raleigh I had was previously my sisters and when I was working there in 1970’s they were selling off the remaining stock to staff at £45 including purchase tax. I kept it until well into the 1990’s.
  24. You’re quite right CT. My error. I thought the world had turned upside down for a minute. I ran a Raleigh Runabout for years. I had 3 in fact which was necessary to butcher 2 to keep 1 going. I got stopped for speeding descending Derby Road from Canning Circus.
  25. Boris didn’t look well to me. I’d get checked out. Do you think a few sacrifices might appease the God(s). I got a list of candidates I’d like to nominate. I have a long memory, nasty streak and unforgiving nature and if I do get the virus I will visit them. For old times sake you understand.
