  1. I too saw them at Basford but New Basford, corner of Rosetta Road. both my dad and uncle saw them too, not sure where Karl the german pow was? probably by then liberated. As regards the Ural Mountains have heard the same thing said re the area just after the turn off to Kirby in Ashfield (Shoulder of Mutton Hill) 0n the A611, a plaque high on the wall of one of the cottages there states that point is the highest in Nottinghamshire or something like that, no idea if it is
  2. I think that flypast was a couple of years (or more) later as it (surely there was only one?) is my earliest memory
  3. The Bagthorpe Curve seen on the left in that photo led from Bagthorpe Junction which was actually just 2 sets of points connecting the GCR to the GNR, Not sure if the "rathole line" had an official title, but that did the opposite connecting the GNR to the GCR
  4. Does anyone know why there is ? (or was till about 10 years ago) an old single decker tram in the grounds of Nottingham City Hospital, as I recall the later buildings had been sort of built around it, was in the area east of the outpatients and north off the long corridor (I think)
  5. "Somewhere" I have a photo of that turntable, will have a look for it later, What that map doesn,t show is the differing heights of the various lines nor the massive embankments, those mentioned sidings leading to the bridge over Arnold Rd were on such, at least 8 tracks there so you can imagine how wide that was, on the map I have it was labelled The GNR Bagthorpe Curve, assume that referred to the 2 lines going over Arnold Rd? That bridge was in 2 parts with a gap between them over the road, (can be seen) local daredevils crossed the road one foot on each span, till one slipped and fell to
  6. Some years ago it was a youth club/community centre, not sure if still the same
  7. I think I,ve related this before but met an old lady 40 years ago who had lived as a child in a pub called The Gate Hangs Well http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/tts/tts1909/brewhouseyard1.htm She told me they lived in caves at the back, she also told me she remembered the Great Central Railway being built and after school would go to the site of Victoria Station to see what progress had been made
  8. Yes, could it be the quiet no ex England player (or manager) or big name approach has been the answer? I'm certain the era of Sven and post then must have set every other team determined to beat us? I also sense Derry is a clever plotter and planner? not only in his choice of loan or other players but in tactics, varying such to each game?
  9. Well we did it, easy in the end! Promotion to Div 1 (same difference, lol) Out with the shirt on tonight (are Home Ales still their sponsers?)
  10. I know the brewery in old basford was called The Prince Of Wales, but who owned it? am I correct in thinking the one on (or just off) North Gate in the Palm St. area called The Nottingham Brewery before bought up by Shippo's?
  11. this is getting daft! but the jimi hendrix experience live, Glen Miller, V1 doodlebugs, air raid wardens, the home guard, saxondale asylum, viking long boats on the trent
  12. it's only 2 weeks ago local (to me) forest fans were still predicting getting in the play offs, with the usual "Too good for this league" talk, and I agree, they should be, what with the crowds, stadium, history etc, maybe it'll all work out next year? but I'm left with a feeling that something is seriously wrong behind the scenes? I'm also wary of clubs who rehire a failure, a past player, or a "name" manager, Maybe it's just me as Worthington is having a roaring success! I really did think this year they were going to do it, makes you wonder what would have happened if Davies had stayed?
  13. No indeed, 2 out of the 3 here at 68, and when I finally make it as a rock star the 3rd should follow? Back on topic The NSR stations close July 13th 1916 (as a wartime savings) St Ann's Station never did open again, but Sherwood and Thorneywood did , but only for 1 day! July 10th 1928, for the visit of King George and Queen Mary, Sherwood Station being the destination of 13 special trains carrying 6,550 children and 284 teachers from Basford and Bukwell, Thorneywood and Nottm Low Level, where they "met" the King and Queen on a sort of Gala Day on Woodthorpe Park. The NSR Stations having be
  14. even more of an anorak is knowing which line ran on that embankment! (guilty as charged) the pub in one picture was The Ginger Tom? and the bridge there was unusual in so much as one track crossed on the level and the other was rising or falling (forget which without looking it up) I liked The Suburban, a total failure of course but then again I'm a Notts County fan as well! Never saw it in use and missed seeing some features "in the flesh" but in less than 4 miles it had 3 stations,3 tunnels,, that unique bridge, a quite complex junction at Trent Lane, 2 (if short) viaducts and 8? other brid
  15. even less same sex shotgun weddings
  16. In view of the events at Man Utd today do you think we should be starting a "Hands Off Derry" petition? we don't want any poaching going on, I suggest they go for Paul Ince, talking of failures how ironic would it be if Forest got in and won the playoffs with the set up they now have!
  17. We all seem to be ignoring Hitlers Reserve Plan? he knew the common market/EU would take time before all of europe became part of the 4th reich so from his bunker he set up a fifth column to infiltrate and destroy our nation of shopkeepers, ALDI !
  18. I am not a number I am a free man
  19. And heres me thinking all these years brainwashing and slavery had been abolished
  20. Yes it was some right bitch on the telly who (more for the series and her own good than any charity) tarted the shops up got rid of the volunteer "old biddies" and set managers and staff on, hence prices going up, maybe they are making more money for the charities? but now theres a generation walking round in years old clothes and holey shoes as their supply cut off,lol We'll be getting Paul O Grady pleading from his 200 acre stately home for £2 from us all next
