  3. Death announced today. Age 89.
  4. Brian Can't died 19th June aged 83. Remembered by a generation of kids in the days of steam television. RIP Brian.
  5. Still in Summer Wine mode, also sorry to read of the passing of Jane Freeman ( Ivy from the cafe) on 9th March 2017 aged 81. R.I.P. Ivy.

  9. Hank was a creation of Francis Coudrill, and shared a spot on the Saturday morning programme Whirligig. It was hosted by Humphrey Lestocq, and among the contributors was the lovely Patricia Driscoll.
  10. Re: Ian's query #392... Shonky pit closed in 1945. We lived at Back Cottages back then and the nearest air raid shelter was on the pit compound. The shaft was used for pumping for a couple of years after.

  12. I remember Bridgett. She lived in the first house on Coventry Road, immediately after the Red Lion pub. She had a friend Collen Rose who lived next door.

  14. I remember the New Town Inn. The landlord was Sam Abthorpe. His younger daughter Beryl was a classmate at Quarry Road school. In your post #9, there was mention of "chobbers "sweet shop. As a youngster I worked for Les (Chobber) CHEETHAM in his ice cream factory situated opposite Thames Street. Lots of other names are coming to mind as I write.
  15. Hi Radford. I used to live at Back Cottages between the "Top House" and Shonkey pit. Then moved to Mersey Street. Attended Quarry Road school. This was in the 40's. Left Mersey Street in 1952. Sorry, but your names do not ring a bell with me. Maybe after my time?

  21. With respect to Catfan's contribution #30. As a youngster I worked for Cheethams. His shop. Was indeed on the corner of Commercial Road / Latham Street. The ice cream factory was situated on Commercial Road, opposite Thames Street.
