  1. Thanks for that info Brew, I couldn't think what they were called......... Been thinking: The tram uses 750 volts DC, the overhead wire is positive & the grounded rails are negative, I'm presuming some of the DC current leaks into the ground & there is the free din-dins for the electric bugs, aren't we kind?
  2. Been reading in New Scientist about 'electric bacteria.' These are bugs that feed on & excrete electrons, they don't need oxygen to survive, they're found in very low oxygen environments. They have been found on electrodes carrying a low voltage. They're speculating that some of them live off ground currents that flow through the earth. I'm presuming the ground currents would need to be DC & not AC like you'd get from earth leakages from electrical power distribution systems & the SWER (single wire earth return) power line systems they use in some rural areas of Australia & Ne
  3. Our water here in West Hucknall comes from the river Derwent dams & is soft according to Severn Trent website, our kettle never furs up. When I lived in Kirkby it was hard & the kettle did fur up. Father in law used to bring a bottle of Hucknall tap water & a camping kettle with him when he came to visit us as he said he couldn't drink tea made with Kirkby water. I can tell the difference when I visit friends in Kirkby....
  4. Was on the belt staff down Hucknall pit...... I was sent to the pit bottom to collect a length of chain & a flight for a panzer & take it to K6's face main gate lip as the face was standing, they'd be belt staff waiting for me there. So off I went with them down the drift to the Black Shale seam where K6's face was. When I got to K6's main gate junction the K6's main gate belt was running & discharging coal onto the east intake drift belt, I asked the belt button man if the face had been standing? He said "no, it's been coaling for ages, they don't mean A'6's face do they?" I phone
  5. SWMBO bought me a pair of Sennheiser HD 205 headphones, & I listen to my music on them while she's watching her load of old tosh soaps...
  6. I'm using a Celastion Ditton 44 on the right channel & the smallish speaker that came with the cheapo Panasonic stereo on the left... I'm using odd speakers as SWMBO wont let me have two 44's in the lounge as they're too big. When Mother-in-law gave me the two 44's a decade or so ago I wired them both up to the Pana & they sounded fantastic, SWMBO comes in & says "they're too big, they have to go." I pleaded & groveled & she said I could keep one. I said "oh no you can't gave odd speakers, it'll sound awful." To prove it I played Bohemian Rhapsody over the two 44's which so
  7. Parents... Install double glazing so the kids can't hear the ice cream van so saving £££'s...
  8. After seeing the antics of Miley (next doors spaniel) I think we can assume dogs won't be running a parallel universe, she's outsmarted by their cat Shadow & our cat Pix, & he's totally brainless, lol..
  9. In New Scientist mag that there are hints of a mirror universe = a parallel universe where everything is - er - reversed. They think, if true, it could explain dark matter & dark energy. They're carrying out further experiments to prove or disprove the mirror universe hypothesis...... I've a funny feeling that on further investigation the mirror universe hypothesis will turn to dust in front of their eyes & the dark matter/dark energy mystery will prevail & it'll be back to the metaphorical drawing board so to speak..... I feel for these scientists when they think they've made a b
  10. Agree shame she pulled out, would have been nice to have a working class PM... I think Starmer will win it & Long Bailey runner up...
  11. I used to have a Rolls Canhardly.... It rolled downhill but could hardly get up... I'll get me coat on the way out...
  12. I used to like those candy fags you could get when I was a kid, I'd think I looked cool pretending to be smoking..... When I actually tried proper smoking when I was 14 on the school bus I took 3 drags & coughed & coughed & coughed & coughed then boffed up on my crush's shoes, I've never touched a fag since...
  13. John (Ayupmiducks) I'm expecting Greta Thunderburg to blame us baby boomers for the universes expansion, lol....... Jill Sparrow, you sound like my wife, she'll say "get to sleep & stop thinking about things," lol...
  14. Till 1998 they thought the universe was slowing down it's expansion & would eventually go in reverse. But then they found out through several different ways that the expansion appears to be accelerating, they have zero idea how or why. I lay in bed thinking how the universe will be in billions of years time... Been trying to work out the power source that powers the earth upwards at 32 feet per second per second all the time?
  15. Been reading on a flat earth site that gravity doesn't exist. They explain the reason we stick to the earth is because it is accelerating upwards at 32 feet per second per second & this goes on forever. I'm wondering what happens when the upwards accelerating flat earth eventually gets near light speed ? Looks like things could get interesting on our flat earth in the future...
  16. Thanks for that link Stuart C, very interesting reading. Also reading about the Blackpool & Tramways museum systems as I've been on both of them..... When I worked down Hucknall pit on the diesel loco's if we'd got no sand (often happened) we'd use stone dust, but if it got wet it seemed to make traction worse, but not usually wet as Deep Soft was a fairly dry seam...
  17. I've had the same mobile phone number since 1999 & still can't remember it, I know it starts "0771" & that's as far as I get, I expect a lot of numbers start 0771 though, lol...
  18. On hols here in Tenerife & noticed taxis have blue number plates at the back & white at the front, can't remember seeing this last time I was here in 2007 or in Gran Canaria last year. Wonder if only here or all over Spain/
  19. Little Jack Horner, sat in a corner, eating his Christmas pie, he put in his thumb, & pulled out a plum.... Then his Mam saw him, biffed him round the tab hole & shouted "EAT YOUR FOOD PROPPER YOU BRAINLESS LITTLE BO**ER!"
  20. I got in my car, put it in drive, released handbrake, pressed the accelerator & nothing happened = I hadn't started the engine. I'm sure I'm going daft, lol...
  21. My Hyundai i10 has 4 gears, you can change manually if you want & also keep it in a low gear for long downhills by moving the shift lever to the right when in drive. I just leave it in drive most of the time unless going down long hills like that one going into Whitby through Sleights...
  22. I've drove automatics since 2010 & wouldn't voluntary go back to a manual. I'd always had manuals because they were cheaper but my wife developed arthritis in her left knee so we went automatic. We're now on our 2'nd Hyundai i10 automatic & very happy with it. Used to drive in-laws automatic Hyundai Santa Fe & Citroen C4 Picasso, most of the time towing a caravan...
  23. I used to take my pupils on fast dual carriageways & get them up to 70 MPH so they wouldn't get such a shock when going on the M1 after passing their tests, of course learners can go on the M1 now but couldn't back then. I'd also take them over Clifton bridge & get them to change lanes while at speed, that made a few sweat, lol...
  24. Where the white lines have worn away people have to make their own lanes & white lines up in their minds to decide where to go, however people have different ideas on where the imaginary lanes & white lines should be & that is where confusion is possible. Someone who passed their test last week will react differently to someone who passed decades ago, & you have illegal drivers who've never passed a test. I used to advise my ex pupils to display a green L (new driver) or P (passed) plate so other drivers would know they've just passed their test...
  25. Our road always floods when there's heavy rain as the drains can't cope, our drive slopes up from the road so house a few feet above road so safe from flooding. Moaned to Ashfield council many times but nothing ever done... Wife was staring through the lounge window during the heavy rain yesterday: I eventually let her in...
