  1. I don't recall those Ben. But now you mention it, I recall that we used to walk some way from Henry Whipple to football fields somewhere up around Padstow school. I recall being very upset when I was dropped from the school team.. but there's no doubt that I was rubbish at footy. I had no idea of tactics and only barely understood the rules.
  2. Could be. I know the name Rozalex but can't be sure that's what the pink stuff was.
  3. For Brew and anyone else moved to take to the streets in defence of Parliament.. Here's a link to information about Anti Proroguation Protests all over the country and even in Amsterdam. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=126xVlyiCy5vkZhJFDVNJyMQFFuCuliV5&hl=en_US&ll=53.014163985843595%2C-4.137744119476565&z=6 Brian Clough Statue seems to be the venue for repeat protests in Nottm.
  4. I've just remembered a pink 'barrier cream' that I think was also issued by the Coal Board. strange smelling stuff.. probably based on Lanolin.. which is derived from sheep wool.
  5. If I recall correctly, one of my more senior colleagues at the Coal Board Labs did some analysis on Swarfega (the late 60s version). It was basically paraffin (kerosene), and water, in an emulsion of some sort, with a bit of added color and antiseptic. As I recall the coal board itself issued a simlar cleaner which was red in colour and called Centrex. As a youngster, I would clean my hands after fixing bikes or whatever, using soap, with a sprinkle of 'Vim' added. It worked. When I worked for a firm called 'Gunac' in Liverpool, applying multi layer paint
  6. I didn't really know who lived on Leybourne, apart from a few who lived between Padstow and Eardley Rd, whose names I no longer remember. I do recall that a girl I was at Henry Whipple with until 1959/60, called Valerie Benson, lived somewhere along the right side of Leybourne as you go from Eardley towards Hove. Mention above of the Leonardis. I remember Brian Leonardi, who's nickname was 'Pud, or 'Pudding' in school. I worked with him briefly on the building of the short lived 'Basford Flats' around 1970. Ben, you've mentioned an 'air raid shelter'. I wonder if you or Man
  7. Welcome Mandie. For what it's worth, Gainsford Crescent showed up on some maps as early as 1935, but not sure if any of it was built yet. I moved from Bilborough to Southglade road around 1951/2 and was told that the footings were down pre war, but it was not completed until after WW2. On the other hand, Andover Road definiteley had houses with SP still painted on their front wall, to indicate that a 'Stirrup Pump' was kept there for firefighting due to air raids. Proof it was built pre 1945. I honestly don't know about Leybourne, except that my late sister lived th
  8. Oversimplified Fly. 1. The argument which came to a head today is not about leave v remain..it is about deal or no deal and that crook Johnson's machinations to block Parliament in its legitimate efforts to prevent no deal. Nobody voted for no deal. 2. Whatever the leavers think, Parliament is the arbiter of Democracy in this country.. not the Govt, and certainly not a minority Govt, supported by a bunch of bribed Irish bigots, and led by a 'Prime Minister' elected by a tiny minority of the country's population.
  9. Phew!! A little late to tackle that lot tonight and anyway I'm not a blind follower of Corbyn. I just object to the way he is portrayed... especially by a press which does little to criticise the far right chicanery, dishonesty, sleaze, illegal campaign funding etc., etc., which is fuelling the current situation. As for the coup and the demonstrations.. They are already reported to have started in Liverpool, Manchester and Chester. Just wait till the shit really hits the fan....
  10. But to be fair to Madge, she has no choice but to agree to Johnson's advice.. unless it can be legally demonstrated to be wrong. Which it obviously is. Personally, I'm tolerant of the Royals as they are a bit of a money spinner.. but the alleged antics of some of them are not helping their image, or their case.
  11. What about the other parties' Manifestos Brew? Are they all 'sales puff' too? And if Labour's is just 'puff'.. how can you conclude that a Corbyn Govt. would be 'hard left'? What even is 'hard left'? Would you at least agree that we've basically just seen what amounts to a right wing 'coup'? Unelected Prime Minister supported by unelected crooks and chancers like Dominic Cummings, taking out the opposition of Parliament.. which is the true authority and seat of Democracy in the country, by making up some tripe about a Queen's Speech. FIVE WEEKS? Spontaneous demos in numerou
  12. He wasn't miserable in 'The Great Escape'.. just a bit pathetic. " Please take me with yooo. I can see paahfectly..."
  13. Not keen on rioting either, but we are witnessing a right wing coup by those who have no respect for, and frankly see no need for, Parliament. The even sadder thing is that so many stupid people see nothing wrong with it because theres' been 'too much messing about and we just need it done'.
  14. Johnson just proved what a shameless lying crook he is by standing up on TV and trying to claim that his proposed 'prorogation' of Parliament is 'entirely normal' because he needs a 'Queen's Speech for his new Government and that it is 'nothing to do with Brexit.' Talk about stretching credibility. Everyone apart from him and his cronies has expressed outrage at this deliberate misuse of power and subversion of the rule of Parliament. Expect big trouble.
  15. Thought provoking article from Chris Patten: https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/britain-brexit-failed-state-by-chris-patten-2019-08?fbclid=IwAR39V2OuviZkSjGZ8ZRYM6-EHNwCvmxyaTbxN6W3PM8gRyLkkIe7nocC9ro A brief clip from the above:
  16. I'm going to split hairs here Phil. Corbyn is a poor leader.. no doubt about that, but not for the reasons trotted out by the Far Right owned press. Corbyn is not 'Hard Left'. None of the policies in the Labour Manifesto are 'Hard Left'. It's just that the Far Right owned press has chosen to portray Corbyn that way and he's been very poor at deflecting such lies. Meanwhile, the Far Right press are giving Johnson an easy ride.. when we all know that he is really a liar, a bully and a crook. Like I said to Brew. It's a complex situation, but much of the support for the likes of
  17. P.S. I am STILL waiting for any of our resident Brexiteers to present any sort of assessment of the 'benefits' of leaving the EU. Brexiteers of course can be sure vthat I'll disagree with whatever they come up with.. but I'd have thought they'd be able to back up their love of Brexit with something more than emotion and bluster.
  18. I think it's entirely possible that a different Labour leader would have had us 'enjoying a Labour Govt. as we speak. However.. we are where we are and it's all more complex than that. There seem to be endless permutations of possible alliances etc., and different interpretations of the actual position of HM Official Opposition. Much more pressing to me is that Johnson is now blatantly proposing to 'defend' the exceptionally flawed so-called 'democracy' of the Brexit vote, by 'suspending' the far wider and more established centuries old democracy which is legally an
  19. I can see that Kev. I went to Clifton via the tram from Boowul a couple of years ago.. just exploring. It was the first time I'd ever been to Clifton in my life and it seemed like another world to me... Clifton as I recall from that one visit was spacious and basically flat, whereas the north side of the city away from the Trent flood plain is much more hilly.
  20. There's a chap called Paul Kappa who plays the Cavern Pub opposite the Cavern proper every weekend. He and his band 'Kappa' do Superstition very well. I first saw them in a couple of pubs in St Helens 15 years or more ago.. Excellent band and worth catching if you're in the area.
  21. Here's a thread I started over on Pink Fish Media a few weeks back. Asking for people's 'Top 5 Motown Songs' .. https://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads/your-5-favourite-best-motown-songs.229219/ I was kind of joking because I couldn't even decide my own top 5 Motown songs and they would be different every day.. but it brought out some interesting discussion. There's some very informative history of Motown there.. especially from my good friend Dean... (posting as 'SCIDB') a science teacher from Sheffield, well known in 'hi fi' circles and the single pe
  22. We used to get the 28 to Trinity Square and walk round to the Empire Cafe for a spot of tiffin.. I Loved the place too.
  23. I don't think being a little suspicious of , for e.g., the Government 'line' on something.. makes anyone a 'conspiracy theorist'. As far as I'm concerned the pejorative, or maybe just adequately descriptive use of the term is, and should be, reserved for the more extreme loonies who insist that the Moon landings never happened, or that there is a 'cover up' of Aliens landings run from Area 51.. or that the Queen is really a lizard.. or whatever...
  24. I don't see it that way. The discusion of blood on the rails, or the absence thereof.. seems to me to be evidence, pointing to likely timings of events, against the known number of trains etc. A bit gory, but necessary for the enquiry I'd say.
  25. Here is a current section of Google Maps of the area in which poor Fred seems to have met his demise. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Randal+St,+Nottingham/@52.9681547,-1.1934994,1681m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x4879c192dd4f6dc3:0x6dec6cf50ed6713b!8m2!3d52.9666643!4d-1.1748556 Aspley is more or less west of Bobber's Mill and there is a Randal Street more or less due east of Bobber's Mill, though the housing on it looks modern. However, if it's the same place as the Randal Street where young Fred lived.. it seems odd that he would not just use the crossing at Bobber's
