  1. Remember William Wales signature on the Blue Bell ceiling Ian? Bet he had a pint of Greene King while he was in there. Love the Royals, always have always will and rule Britannia, God save the Queen Rog
  2. Never thought of that Ian, what about another theory whilst on the subject of a good mystery, It could have been Fritz looking for his 500 pounder that he left behind one night along with 7 others, spooky!!!! Rog By the way there's a book out called "Ghost Stations" about strange goings on at old airfield sites, I wont tell you about RAF Metheringham I'll leave that till our next aviation day
  3. Strange this but here goes, Last winter when I was leaving work at about 17.00hrs I locked the main entrance gate and got in my pickup truck and drove to the end of the drive, about 20yrds my headlights were on as it was dark there is also no street lighting there, i stopped at the junction to turn right when something caught my eye just on the edge of my headlight beam, to the left of me about 6 ft in front was what i can only describe as a pillar of steam, about 5ft tall and maybe 2ft across, not solid but definitely a moving, see through, pillar of steam, it didn't take the form of a human
  4. Snow drops,Daffodils, Hyacinths (sp) poking through the ground , buds/new shoots starting to appear on the goose gog bushes and the grass is still growing, Good news from Louth church, they have decided to leave the Peregrines alone, read about it on the "lincs bird club" website Rog
  5. Pete, Check out the "lincs bird club" web site, click on "forum" all the info is on there Rog
  6. It was only last week I wrote about the Peregrines on Louth church were looking interested in each other and that we were hoping they would breed this year, well the church authorities have put paid to any of that, they want the Peregrines gone, the reason, it would mean stopping the tours around the tower for a couple of months whilst the birds raised their young, the tower tours mainly occur in August (the holiday season) but the birds will have flown the nest by the beginning of July, anyway the church people are going to destroy any nest building activity to prevent these wonderful hawks b
  7. Thats great news for you Ian, I will expect a few thousand pictures then. Roger's just turned green Rog
  8. It's great to see these names back on the threads, welcome back Rog
  9. Might be a coincidence Pete but aren't most of the buildings we are losing Christian, ie churches, chapels or just christian establishments?? Rog
  10. Was Pugin responsible for the interior decoration of the houses of parliament? Rog
  11. Woodpeckers drumming at this time of year is a good sign, it means they are marking out their territories, later in the season when they start drumming it will be for food, only seen one Great spotted woodpecker in the back field and he was drumming on our electricity pole, a couple of Green woodpeckers dashing about from the village pond to the small copse down the lane, was told yesterday that the Peregrines on Louth church are starting to look interested in each other so who knows, the Peregrines on Lincoln cathedral should breed again this year but I'm a bit worried for the Redstarts that
  12. Hi Pete, plenty of fieldfares and Redwing in the next field as I saw earlier this morning while on me trike ride, but could'nt see them from my garden because of hedge alongside the field so I dont think they count, did notice this morning that the local mole has been busy during the night and there are plenty of new mole hills in the field alongside my fence, the blackbirds are dancing on them looking for grubs and worms, is this a case of nature working together? Rog

  14. Quite right Limey, Turdus migratorius, American robin, 10" long from beak to tip of tail, has the character of the blackbird with uniform brick red breast, dark grey head and back, bold white markings around the eye and white tips to outer tail feathers, a vagrant to England, Ireland and across Europe as far as Yugoslavia, very similar to Naumanns red throated and eye-browed thrushes. sorry for being a bore, info from Birds of Britain and Europe by Roger Peterson, Guy Mountfort and P.A,D, Hollom 1954 Rog
  15. Ah Mr Robin, that iconic British garden bird, last weekend I bought a 500gram bucket of dead meal worms to feed our local pair of Robins but they get bullied off the bird table by the pheasants, Sunday afternoon there was 17 pheasants tucking into the meal worms while poor Mr robin looked on from the fence, guess I'll put another pot of worms out nearer the fence or put the pheasants in a pot Rog
  16. Fantastic pictures Ian, most people only see spectacles like that on the TV or in books, I don't know why when all you have to do is look out of the window or travel a very short distance, Last year on Spring Watch they did one show from Bempton cliffs in yorkshire, looked great so the following weekend we drove up there and what an experience the sights, sounds and smells that just don't come through on the telly. good on yer mate ps your wildlife photo's are getting better as well Rog
  17. Most of the snow has cleared now but our feathered pals still need a helping hand, the ground is soaked and so is what little food is lying about, the only wildlife that appears to be doing well at the moment is the predators, foxes, raptors etc so keep feeding the birds, today I bought some mixed seeds and a small bucket of meal worms and put some of them out on the bird table along with the fat balls and some pieces of fruit I also raked over a bare patch of garden to expose and insect life that might be about, I think there was because the bare patch was covered in blackbirds and a couple o
  18. I'm really enjoying this series and warming to Mr Portillo (although I was a bit of a fan before) at least we are getting a variety of steam loco's, I also think he is beginning to lighten up a bit and look a bit more relaxed among us common folk. Carry on Michael Rog
  19. Just finished building a couple more nest boxes out of old pallets, checked the spotting scope again that's trained on the bushes and old tree out in the field and there is a nice flock of Brambling in with the Chaffinches, Long tailed tits went along the bottom of the garden not long ago so they will be coming back the other way later today, Just one Blue tit at the moment on the feeder station but no Sparrows, might take a trip to Pennels in Hykeham in a bit to get more bird seed for the week and maybe some mealworms. Ashley, my gun is never far away, got to keep my eyes open for the Rats
  20. As I look out over the field at the back of our place there is a flock of about 50 Gold finches flying from the bushes on the left out into the field, maybe 20 yrds from the back fence, when they fly back to the bushes a flock of about 100 Chaffinches go to the field, maybe 40 yrds from the fence, 2 Cock pheasants are strutting their stuff in front of 8 hens (possible pairing up?)Beefsteaks favourites "Wagtails" are playing "tag", A pair of Robins keep visiting the feed table along with Blackbirds, Starlings,Jackdaws, and Song thrush, one worry though is a lack of House sparrows, not seen one i
  21. That is the actual bomb Pete, the front end was cut off after the detonator was removed, it used to be 2ft longer, I think the real length was just over 5ft, the casing is 2" thick, the tail was found about 10ft from the bomb, somewhere in these posts is all the spec for the bomb and detonator, I think I sent a photocopy of all dimensions and defusing instructions to Ian but if he can't find them I will have a look at work to see if I can come up with the originals Rog
  22. The whole area around the Blue Bell was part of RAF Woodhall Spa, in the wooded area you spoke of Kev there are several buildings all to do with the site, If you get the chance on one of your visits try to go to Thorpe camp there are maps and models of the site and you can see how big it was during the latter part of the war, later it became a missile site housing the Bloodhound missiles, the bomb that Ian spoke of was a 500 pounder and I think there may be a picture of it on this site, if not let me know and I will put one on, As for them being buried Pete, it was only at a depth of about 3 m
  23. It's a shame that the sniping that went on before Christmas in "members blogs" has spilled over into the new year in the "crap cars of the 70s" section, is it too much to ask the members to keep the site friendly and forgiving as it once was? after all they are the main reasons I joined this site in the first place Rog
  24. Nice one Pete, Just as I remember Drury Hill, I see in one of the pictures the much discussed Beecroft toy shop and the doorway to the hosiery manufacturers, (had some goodnight snogs in there I can tell you) I must buy these books as you suggest next time I'm in Nottingham Rog
  25. Yes I too saw that embarrassing performance by Big Boy George, absolute rubbish, thankfully most of his warblings were drowned out by the clot on the drums, also Tom Jones looked older than his years with his grey beard and hair and mahogany skin. Happy new year to everyone though Rog
