  2. Sorry Poohbear, West Bridgeford and Sheffield with Sneinton and Birmingham the next generation back on the mother's side. Got a good ( ) education at the old Arnold County High School if that counts?
  3. Nothing to what the bargies called us! Not even close to what the local Constable called us when we let several rockets go from the Rec whilst using the slide as a launching platform. Low angle of trajectory x distance resulted in the rockets exploding over the centre of ROT one night. Main crossroad of Bingham and Shelford Road, shops and police station 3 doors from centre. Apparently everything cascaded down around the place and of course, there were a couple of aerial mines as well. Should have paid us for the show as we heard it was quite spectacular and the Constable said dang
  4. Back in the early to mid 50s, there was considerable barge traffic going up and down the Trent. I am not talking of your yuppie, floating homes or narrow boats but the real thing. Big, long and wide low lying barges carrying freight and sometimes towing another one. You could feel them approaching with the deep throbbing of their motors through the water and the drop in the water level along the banks as they approached and then the wash from their wakes. Now, for ROT boys with nothing better to do, we found it amusing to bait the bargies with name calling and throwing stones at them.
  5. A map of the old Holme Pierrepont gravel pits (1957-1962) is at ...http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html
  6. Just a side note to this topic if I may? The original gravel pits at Holme Pierrepont were situated on the river side of Adbolton Lane at a point approximately where Holme Lane intersects. I have included a link to the Old maps UK site which will show them. The gravel pits between Adbolton Lane and the A52 had not even been thought of when we left ROT in 62 and the Water Sports Centres etc were not even on the horizon. Back in the mid to late 50s, Adbolton Lane was a dirt track full of potholes and virtually impassable in winter, especially if the Trent flooded. Adbolton Lane would eve
  7. That sunset over your garden was magnificent - well done Compo.
  8. Thanks barclaycon - Can place your picture now but the view is not familiar as that area was not built up in my time, just wasteland and low hills. This pic from PTP made me feel old! Bramcote Lane in 1953 at the intersection with Wroxham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.pictureth...M012606=
  9. Thanks Cliff ton re Post #88. That map shows the old Wollaton Vale that intersects up the top of the hill with Ferndale Crescent. It was a dirt footpath from there to the canal embankment. Interestingly, although the map is early 60s?, it does not show the current Wollaton Vale extending past the intersection with Bramcote Lane. In 62, it definitely was a made, bitumen road which came to a dead end just past Alfreston Drive. The housing west of Bramcote Lane across to the canal is just about right; as is the housing on the eastern side of BL. Regarding the PTP picture I posted earlie
  10. House rooflines are from a different angle but same style with single chimney in centre. Taken from a hill. But where are The Ploughs????
  11. Interesting discussion re Bramcote Lane and the surrounds. We lived in Mapledene Crescent, Wollaton for a couple of years after leaving ROT in 62. What I can tell you is that the land on the south east side of Bramcote Lane from Woodbank Drive south was all wasteland with low scrub covered hills. I know this well as we acquired an old motorbike and used to ride it around the wasteland and up and down the hills (more like high mounds). Used to hide the motorbike when we were not using it but sadly, it expired half way up a hll one day and never moved again. This area was just being leve
  12. Lets up the tempo with an often overlooked rocker - Gene Vincent: and then listen to this one; The man had range and was good!
  13. Johnny Cash definitely earned the title 'Singer of Songs':
  14. Give the person some wood..................so he can build a bridge AND GET OVER IT!
  15. Hear, hear! Right on target Michael. The only issue I have with some singers is that they should retire gracefully and accept their voices are not what they used to be. On this point, I fully agree with Cliff ton (post # 8) and his statement would embrace a whole host of singers that we grew up with. I enjoyed Meatloaf, particularly 'Bat out of Hell' but; nowadays his voice has gone. The AFL out here hired him to sing at the Grand Final a couple of years ago and he was pathetic! Forgotten words and out of tune with a backing group that saved him and covered his mumbled words. Little to no ap
  16. That 1st photo looks as though he has had a good smack to the side of the face and make-up is covering the bruising OR he has had a minor stroke judging by how the side of his face has drooped.
  17. And some use other means to stay looking young (????)
  18. PTP shows the old police station/court house in Church Street, Bingham. Your police station in 75 would not have been a traffic operations group HQ would it? Just a thought that will no doubt be shot down in flames. Bingham back in my time was nothing but a market town with nothing going for it!
  19. Mustn't forget the Ostermilk No 2 with the little plastic measuring spoon inside. The powder tasted good but the milk, when mixed, was yuck! Cow and Gate products as mentioned by Jackson, as well as Dinnafords Gripe Water when it all became a bit too rich.
  20. Minarets at each corner and prayer mats on the sidelines.....
  21. For what it is worth and I have not followed soccer for some years. the Oracle is saying that the new Reds coach could be Neil Warnock (ex QPR) or even Rodion Gačanin – Head Coach or Abdulaziz Hamad– Assistant Coach from the Al Qaidisya Soccer Club. As a side issue, serious discussions over here of putting prayer rooms in the sports stadiums for the faithful to use during matches.

Another link to the past is gone but not forgotten. Enjoyed his antics and he and Hattie were a TV must see back then. A pity they don't make them like that any more. R.I.P.
