  3. Forgot to add I also went to the late night premiere of "Sons and Lovers"(was it at the Elite) another B/W film which gives you loads of atmosphere.....Loved Mary Ure such a tragic end as was Rachel Roberts now I think about it....
  4. I have a home cinema with a 10ft screen so every few months on goes the film and I'am back again carrying the tools and walking the streets,one of my childhood friends had an uncle who was an extra on the film the one in the gab raincoat walking around the castle.....

Funny you should say that because I remember when there was a railway carriage in front of the "old station " on London Rd which was a cafe we use to go in on the way to buy "coke"(can I say that) if i remember right it was 2/9p a quarter.The tea in the cafe was shocking kept on a hot plate and so stewed and the "rock cakes" not much better anyone else remember it?
  6. If you look at that picture where the horses head is you can see Summers St on the near corner which you cannot see was the Snackery fish and chip shop,there was also a murder on Summers St in the 50/60s I remember...

  8. Just checked and the entrance was between the Barclays bank(on the corner) and the Primrose Cafe which is the start of the tudor front buildings...

Trust me gentleman that was the Queens cinema,I will always remember going there in 1954/5 to see Doris Day in Calamity Jane because I did not go to bed that night as we had to catch a train around 2.00am to Derby and then down to Harwich to catch the "Black Knight" to the Hook of Holland for 2 weeks in Hamburg.Somethings you remember all your life,onthe ship back it was so rough women and children were all found bunks and a couple of cars which were hooked down on the deck were lost overboard. Quite right,wavy dark hair if I remember,well he worked with the "one arm man' and took over from him him when he retired.As a boy in there I remember him saying to the men "anything for the weekend sir" think you know what I mean......And don't forget across the street was Hilda's fish and chips fabulous when she had "new potato's" fried in cooking butter which she used all the time,she also travelled from Beeston everyday and later on her husband Joe helped in the shop(MY MOUTH IS WATERING)....

  12. O' NO all the shops have gone! The Snackery fish n chips and the cafe my mum worked at in the 50s before the owner moved to the Snackery, still "The Queens" still there (cinema)but for how long.Sorry going for a little cry..

My first job was with the EMGB(hence the gasman) June 1959 and the pay was 3pound 6shillings and 1 penny but if you worked 5 miles from Woodboro Rd you also got 2shillings and 9 pence dinner money each day and age did not come into it. By the way re the one armed window cleaner well my hairdresser only had one arm(lost in WWI) I'am sure he would have been spoken about on this forum just on Kirkewhite St corner of Arkwright St.....
  14. Went to bed at half-time,normally starts here at 10pm not 12.15am,first one on T.V. for me was Blackpool v Bolton think that was a bit better than last nights....
  15. I remember most of the remedies in this topic and had nearly all of them but I fondly remember most going down the terrace to the "off licence" for "indian brandy' in a small jug..

I remember the air raid shelters at "The Fountain" so they were still there into the 50s we used to walk up from the medders to play in them and then go upstairs in "Woolies" to have a wash, remember they had those glass bowls with green soap you tilted to release funny how you remember the little things..

Train trips are great,did above ones in 2005.Stayed at the "Villa Barbara" C'an Picafort half board only 2 star but room looking out across the bay 210 pounds each for 14 days incl flights East midlands.That what I do plan holidays on the cheap that way we go around the world every year thanks to the net.   23. I was at People"s College from 1959 doing my gasfitting course for EMGB so yes its the one at bottom of Maid Marian Way.Think name was written on a yellow neon sign in copperplate but I could be wrong.
