  1. Only name I really recognise is Richard Priestly, but I left in 63, his dad ran Priestly's garden nursery on Westdale lane and had a market stall in the old Central market. He was a mate of a good friend of mine Phil Lovejoy, who live on Digby Ave at the time. The nersery was finally sold to become old peoples units, I know the family did not want to sell but were made an offer they could not refuse including some more land somewhere but cannot remember where for the life of me ! maybe down on the Fosse A46 ? Phil and I actually bought a very old Morris van they had had from new, we got it
  2. Hi Jan Sorry should have explained the pm system. Maybe when Pete comes back get him to send me a PM on here as he will remember my good lady and I, I'm sure. We nearly ended up in Wales instead of oz, my favorite spot was Anglesey as I used to scuba dive there a lot and then progressed to windsurfing again around Anglesey mainly Rhosneiger (spellng), and Trearddur Bay. I was going to buy a B&B but my wife changed her mind in the end, such is life though and cannot complain how ours has panned out.
  3. Hi Jan Lowton Trying my hardest to remember how I knew Pete at the time, don't know if I worked with him or met him at college ? think he was our regular babysitter every Friday night when we live on Perlethorpe Ave off Wesdale lane. Bing a bit diplomatic here, was you his girlfriend at the time ? or maybe a later one. At least you got him in the end :-) If he is a sparky I met him at work. Whereabouts in Wales are you ? maybe pm me if necessary.
  4. Used to know a young bloke called Pete Lowton, in Carlton, him and his girlfriend at the time used to babysit for my wife and I in the 70's.
  5. I was born in Lenton Abbey, moved to Mapperley when I was 5, lived there till I got married, wife comes from Doncaster, but lived in Gedling when we met, we have lived in Hyson green a short while then Gedling/Carlton till we emigrated in 89. Have 5 kids, 4 daughters all in oz in W Australia, number one son came to oz when he left the navy but his ex didnt want to leave mummy so they went back to Sussex to live, then divorced so he moved back to Nottm where he still lives. We have 4 grandkids in UK, one great grandson. In oz we have 7 grankids all in WA. We currently travel full time in oz
  6. Welcome and thanks for posting the photo Purseglove. Do you have anymore or further memories of Gedling school ? And come on, tell us which one is you in the photo :-)
  7. Lovely to look at but horrible to be in ! Remember many years ago having to climb a telegraph pole in a blizzard to replace some overhead cables that had come down in a storm, took me and another bloke about 2 hours between us ! Frozen fingers and stiff as a board when we came down, at least we had a lpg heater in the back of the van to thaw us out. Struggling today with 34C and a bit humid, mind the aircon helps. :-)
  8. Nottingham Ice stadium shop, having my skates sharpened, we were regulars so knew the guy in the shop who did the sharpening and he did my mates and mine while we waited. He had a black and white tv at the back of the shop and he came to the front and said "my god Kennedy's been shot" we thought he was winding us up so he showed us the news flash on the tv. We went back upstairs on to the ice telling people but I dont think most beleieved us ! I was 15 at the time.
  9. Ferry Boat at Hazelford ferry, had some lovely evenings there after a couple of hours fishing. Belle vue and Porchester pubs on Wodborough road Mapperley, my brothers old locals and I used to always find him there when on one of my unanounced return trips back to the uk. The look on his face when I would walk over and stick a pint in front of him, after not seeing him for 2-3 years was a picture. My dad used to be in the Porchester darts team too so many memories there.
  10. I think it would be basic economics, if wood was readily available and cheap it was used. Here in W Australia from Perth up to Wanneroo around 40 odd klms (25 miles) one of the first main roads was constructed of Jarrah timber blocks ! why, because the surrounding forests were full of old growth Jarrah tree's some around 80-100 meters tall and over 2.4 meters diameter ! In our Kings park in Perth there is a trunk of one on an old wooden wheeled cart that is maybe 40 meters x 2.4 still on show, and that had been cut in half to facilitate moving around !
  11. Remember my great aunt had a large piece of bomb shrapnel that landed in her yard after a bombing, she lived on Caunton avenue and there was some military places just off coppice road as I used to go and play there with Stu Morris when I was probably 6 or 7. I was born in 48 so really missed it all thank god.
  12. Thinking back I must have been mistaken, something inthe back of my brain says maybe she was the daughter of the chippy at the bottom of Westdale at the time ? I think that was called Fearn's at the time ? I do know she was a lovely looking girl and one of the first in our class to "mature" so the boys used to drool over her ! My dad knew Dougie Fearn very well from when he was on Carlton Hill at the old house/yard, my dad was a builder so used to go there often for his gear, new and second hand timber etc.
  13. Carni Can you post that other photo of a class at Gedling, that Bazza had ?
  14. Maybe my mistake, her name was Andrea Fearn, so maybe same family but not Doug. I knew Malc Fearn too. I also remember going on a cross country run, which I detested as I could never run to save my life, and as we were in the last few runners going up Arnold lane an old dear pulled alongside and offered us a lift in her car ! We jumped in and she dropped us off on digby avenue after passing all the others ! we of course were then first back at the school, and due to someone dobbing us in got a detention for it and another circuit of the course ! Arnlod lane Mapperley tops, Hazel grove, Digby
  15. Ha Ha ! memories again, I attended Gedling from 59-63, was in A stream (1A1,2A2,3A3,4A4) our teachers were the french teacher Mrs Lemunier (spelling) and Mr Greenwood, I hated him, but the bugger moved up with us from the second year so never left his class. Yes Mr Godfrey was History, a great shot with a blackboard rubber ! Mrs Davenport - handicrafts, Scotty metalwork, Mr Daft - woodwork. Mr Purseglove was the headmaster and Maud was the second in command when I was there, then I think another teacher took the reins, Mr Spencer he was a sadistic barsteward I do know, he gave another mate
  16. Gino Washington an his Ram Jam band played at the Beachcomber several times, and before at the Brit or rowing clubs, great performers and live ! no back up tapes or other rubbish used nowadays to "enhance" an act.
  17. "The Good Soldiers" David Finkel. True account of the Iraqi war, journalist, David Finkel was "embedded" with a platoon of US Rangers on their 15 month tour of the war. Very gripping account and tells a real "Pulls no punches" account of how it really was ! Can't put it down !
  18. Remember the building well as my dad was taken there in 1973 when he died, think it was the Co-op by then. It is one of those things that become etched into your memory, like where you were when president Kennedy got assasinated.
  19. Can anyone remember a big military tattoo type thing on Wollaton park, would have been early 50's ? I remember the noise and searchlights, and my brother got into trouble for bringing home live blank ammunition they had "found" on the park. We lived at Lenton Abbey estate at the time but left there when I was 5 in '53.
  20. RGR What a lovely image of the typical English pub ! could just visualise myself going in there for a nice ploughmans lunch and a pint of bitter ! Will have to have a look next year when I intend another visit.
  21. Bloody hell I nearly spat my lunch all over the keyboard !
  22. My wife is terrible with out of date foods, she regularly empties the cupboards to check and throws it all out ! It annoys the hell out of me, as I hate waste of any kind, food or otherwise. I cannot get through to her that some things such as dried goods, does not go off quickly. Obviously I'm not talking meat and chicken etc. As for being too clean, one of my daughters is a clean freak ! she is constantly cleaning work tops, hands, kids faces you name it ! She uses those anti bacterial hand cleaners and even wipes the supermarket trolley handles before she will touch them ! Her two kid
  23. Don't know if it was at school or college but remember seeing a film about the building of the big suspension bridge, either the Fourth road bridge or the Humber one. We saw it a couple of times from memory, maybe when a teacher was off sick or whatever, still very interesting for me anyway. Only saw on a doco on tv the other day, that it is now becoming badly corroded in the main support wires and they were unsure of how long it had left before something major was required to repair or replace. I love watching these amazing feights of engineering, the big French bridge is another that come
  24. No problem Alison, just we do not do it ! If someone wants to get plastered its their problem not mine, I grew up with an alcoholic brother, uncle and gran so maybe I've been skewed a bit. As for over eating, I'm on a health kick to lose a few kilo's, but I do lve my food. :-)
  25. I think metal detector enthusiasts get a bad name for the mess they leave behind (not saying all of them) we often go into old mining areas that look like world war 2, craters everywhere or millions of small mole hills. My SIL was into it for a while and I spent more time filling in his holes than doing any detecting. Think its always the ones that dont do the right thing that spoil it for the good guys. Its like the rubbish droppers ! (a pet hate of mine)
