  1. Skegness (Nottingham by the sea) I think most of us don't like it because we spent most of our childhood there. Used to always stay on Stow's Manor Farm caravan site. From slop buckets, gas mantels to real pluming and electric lights. Dad won at bingo and sent me of to the hairdresser's to have a perm (first ever perm) what a site I looked, use to go to Derbyshire holiday camp to swim in there out side pool cost 6d, Linger longer chippy (why is it called that) well you get your chips open with salt/vinegar in news paper, and start eating when you get to the caravan site their is the rubbish b

  5. Just went though this old topic please Blondie the ladies play excellent bowls, better that some men, and it is not an old mans game, have you never seen potters on television plus we have an under 25 England team. The 25s team is made up of young men and women. In winter most of us play inside eg Alfreton, Norfolk, Northumberland, Durham and many more places. Then in summer we play out doors either flat green or crown green it's a game of skill and team work. So please don't knock it till you've tried it. Any one interested in playing get along to your nearest green and have a go, mos
  6. Did not want to start a new topic so I thought this one would suit what I'm going to say. WHAT A LOAD OF BOWLS. The bowling season will be starting in April (no not April 1st) any one who lives near Heanor and is interested please get in touch. Just a little about the game as there is more to bowls than the mere playing of the game, There are rules to be followed by bowlers when on the green, be polite to the other team, even though they do get on your nerves, never send a bowl with the wrong bias, as you have to buy all members a drink afterwards, don't call the captain as you
  7. This is a bit late for mother's day but years ago, my friend and I caught a bus to bottom of Wilford Road and went over the half/penny bridge. After about 10mins walk we came across some house's, now one garden was full of daffs, being mother's day my friend and I thought that nobody would miss a few daffs.. Mums loved those Daffs, but to this day I still feel guilty. So if you reading this who owned the house I'm sorry for pinching your Daffs, but you did make my mum happy.
  8. I must admit when cleaning my son's bedroom and finding the mag's of the top shelf, I could not help but sit down and read them. Very Interesting!!!
  9. At Tai Chi the other day the subject came up about sex lesson's at school. As most of the group have had children and now grandchildren it gave us some thing to get our teeth in to. First how do you explain to a child of five where he came from, Answer you get a mixing bowl and put in some love with an egg place in the oven for 5 mins and hey presto you have a baby boy, when I was 23 I had two boys (normal way) but a friend of mine who had just got married ask me to tell her were babies came from (This was not a joke she did not have a clue) When my eldest was 10 or some were round that age I
  10. Was in Notts the other day and noticed that one of our pubs not closing down was the Turf Tavern it seems that it's had a transformation and is now called The Hop Merchant. Try saying that when you've had a few.
  11. Loved looking at all the photo's I think if members looked back at a topic that, I started, it proves that there's nothing to touch our old photos. Topic Photos September 6th 2015.
  12. The hair was from Pompadour Mount st Basford If you brought it with the bottle it cost 2/6 if you had it refilled up it cost 2/- it was called lacquer because it contained sellac now days not used in hair sprays, the best thing about lacquer was that your hair once sprayed would not dare move out of it's style
  13. What do you think about the HS1/HS2 High Speed Railway? do we really need it? The UK and France built Concord what a waste of money that was, will the high speed rail go the same way? I know we have to have progress but is this the answer, this high speed rail should have been built years ago, would it not be better if we improved the rail stock that we have by electrifying them. The government want us to use public transport so why don't they make rail travel cheaper. We had the M1 built in the 60's look at it now "yes" it is used a lot but if we had a better transport system then I'm sure mo
  14. Benjamin 1945 Pick your self up and start all over again, if you can't beat um join um.
  15. Just found a new book written by a journalist it's witty, bracing account of being diagnosed with Parkinson's aged 43. Its called OLD AGE A Beginner's Guide. by Michael Kinsley Will read the book and give feedback you never know it might give us maturity people hope? well maybe. Please Compo don't call us "older folk" we are the mature 60s generation like Walt Disney's say's no matter how old you get there's a child in all of us waiting to get out.
  16. When I was knee high to a grass hopper, I was walking with my brother bottom of Carlton Road? near the park, the wind was howling though the railings and making a very weird screeching sound, "what that noise I ask" Oh!! it's just the ghost he's coming to take you away. Never have I walked past those railings again. Brothers can be cruel sometimes.
  17. crankypig all the joys of having a dog with out having to take it out for a walk.
  18. I think Clifton Colliery must have a jinx on it. My granddad worked there many years ago, his claim to fame was that he had an heart attack on the Guild Hall Steps and did not recover. Now I hear that it is going to be a hotel, I bet their are a few ghost inside the Guild Hall that no body has seen yet.
  19. Doe's Valentines day not work both ways? should not us ladies buy the men a present? mind you did not get master any thing, we are just content with Love!!
  20. Very interesting video when the film was made in the 60s my father/and 3 uncles worked at Raleigh also 2 cousins and my sister in law. My sister did the twilight shift at the time Raleigh worked 3 shifts morning afternoon evenings plus twilight. What other jobs were their in the 60s Player's Plessey, Boots, Pits, and many more, in fact you could leave a job on a Friday night and start a new job Monday morning. But I'm sure most members can remember the job's of the 60s.

Praise I've given to our NHS now not so sure. I had a phone call from Kings Mill telling me to book in for a colonoscopy, at the time I was out and master took the call, he passed on two telephone numbers for me to call to book. One before 5 00pm and the other number for after 5 00, well as it was only 4 30 tried several times first number, no reply tried 2nd number nurse answered, app booked nurse then ask if, as I had being given on my last visit a PX for Moviprep and would I pick it up from the chemist. Took 10mins telling her that no PX had been given, nurse promised she would send detail
  24. As far as I can remember the hospital was like a wooden hut as on the map, maybe the school was built around it.
