  1. My Grandad's shed is in the middle photograph ! It's the third one from the left with the white painted window frame..... incredible ! Thanks for posting those pics Cliff Ton...
  2. #7 Meltonstilton, does this mean she was "assaulted"..... (sorry) Smiffy
  3. #16 The allotments ! My Grandad had a plot down there too, but this was during the 1950's. We would walk to it from his house which was right outside the No 40 terminus. Crossing over the h'penny bridge, looking through the wired side supports down at the river below. Next came an iron fence with the pond far behind, and like you PeverilPeril, then turning left along Coronation Drive(?) Next through a narrow bridge under the GC railway line and down the long path to his allotment on the right. Somewhere I have an old photograph of his little wooden garden shed which stood on his plot. He
  4. Was this also nicknamed the "Ponderosa" or am I getting that mixed up with somewhere else? Smiffy
  5. First holiday in a caravan as a youngster. The smell of the caravan gas lights mingled with the aroma of egg and bacon cooking. Odd one this...... the smell of a brand new comic from the camp shop.
  6. Thanks everyone, he will be amazed when I ring him at the weekend. Smiffy
  7. My Brother rang me last night and our conversation turned to this Forum. He asked me if I could find out if anyone had ever heard of a pub in the "Medders" called the Belvoir Castle. Anyone heard of it or know the name of the street it was on? Smiffy
  8. When did Redifusion come into being? I think my Mother worked there for a while, she once told us that she had to take (or make?) some sort of call from my Dad, who was serving in the Army overseas. The story goes that once the call was connected she had to leave her desk and go into some sort of switchboard type office at the Redifusion offices. The switchboard operator, who was connecting the call, must have said "Roger" to her opposite number abroad. My Mother, not used to telephones etc, quickly interrupted her to explain that my Dad's name was "Reg" not "Roger" ! After that everyone
  9. I think it will outlast all of us on here. My Grandfather first took me to see it when I was six. He told me all about the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. He also told me that his own Grandfather had taken him to see it when he was the same age as I was then. It stirred my imagination and afterwards I read as much as possible about their exploits in Sherwood Forest. His Grandfather had also told him to make sure to take his own Grandchildren in the future. He said the same thing to me......... Unfortunately I do not have any (yet) so I hope it does hang around for a lot longer.
  10. Most of time we went by train too, the car was an old Morris 10 and only used if we went for a week or more. I preferred the train to be honest as the car always made me feel queasy. Like you say the smell of the smoke was terrific (it should be bottled). My Dad would only allow us to lean out if we wore our swimming goggles. Not quite the last thing we did when leaving, but another very enjoyable feature was the trip to the "Linga Longa" Fish & Chip shop... think that was further up the coast though? Smiffy
  11. You can just imagine the tension in the ESA control room when they initially lost contact after landing. After the first "bounced landing" the Mission Controller asked for a signal to be sent by one of the back room engineers to try and re-establish contact..... "Rosetta are you better, are you well, well, well" Apparently someone said his name was a Mr A. Price..... Smiffy
  12. I wonder if we will ever get something similar landing here on earth from other civilisations in the years to come? Maybe they will pick up some of our threads on Nottstalgia and think "that's an interesting place" let's visit Nottingham ! Can you imagine the members map being updated to show the outer reaches of the universe. Smiffy
  13. Throwing a stone into the sea was also a ritual in our family, but I suppose mine was writing your name in the sand knowing that hours later (when tucked up in bed around midnight) the sea would erase it. Another game was sticking your hand as far back into the corner of the car rear window, so as to be the last one to leave the seaside town. Smiffy
  14. Whatever you think about Europe - Congratulations to everyone at the European Space Agency. Rosetta will leave no stone unturned. Smiffy
  15. #167 Mainly because a lot of people are members of both organisations and this provides a level of shared knowledge and consistency. Smiffy
  16. The ghost walked right through the door and saw his wife sat at the kitchen table. Hello dear, he said, what's wrong with you, you look as if you've seen a human..... Smiffy
  17. When I first started work I used to a 50 mile round trip by cycle. As you say batteries were a drain on your pocket and often the lighting system would suffer in poor weather. A strip of emery cloth was part of the saddle bag kit to clean the contacts from time to time. I unvested in a dynamo but the resultant wear on tyres did not improve things. Also when slowed up by steep hills this reduced the light to a dull yellow flicker. Saw a cyclist the other evening with "indicators" on top of his jacket ! Smiffy
  18. Dogs or Hoovers? He also sometimes helps with the washing..... ran off with the peg bag the other day. The worst case was when my wife was going out for the day and she asked me to bring the washing in if it looked like rain. 4 hours later I noticed a spot or two on the window pane so went outside to get it in. The dog followed me so, knowing his usual trick of running off with the peg bag, I hung it out of reach on the line. After several unsuccessful attempts to do a "Jaws" leap to get it, he gave up. The postman arrived with the mail so I walked over to the gate to save him coming up
  19. Interesting map, which one of those was the old GC line? Smiffy
  20. Didn't someone try it on aching joints once and found out it worked? Smiffy
  21. Same problem, we had to be quick and get the windfall up every day before the dog hoovers them up ! We find that pine cones (we have hundreds) are great on the log burner, it makes a change from spraying them silver ! Smiffy PS:- Explanation - the dog does actually use a hoover, but hold on a minute, perhaps with a bit of training..........?
