  1. YouTube gives us wonderful access to music and video, much of which we remember from long ago. If you haven't yet used YouTube, then have a go. It is very easy to find a piece of music or video, but it would be nice to be able to retain it on your computer. You can. Actually, what you retain is the URL address link that takes you into YouTube and plays the piece. I am told that computer savvy people can actually download and retain the pieces. It is likely that some members have their own preference as to how they retain the URL link, but this is how I do it. I have Windows 7 and use Internet
  2. Not quite things that you do not see anymore, but something that seems to be getting less common. I was in Sainsbury's Arnold this morning - it was busy. As Mrs Chulla was pushing the trolley around and occasionally dropping something in it, I mooched around. I noticed that most women were wearing trousers/jeans and the like, and I thought that years ago, when I was young, a woman wearing slacks or trousers was not a common sight. I then walked around the store from one end to the other, looking down all of the isles, and counted the number of females that were wearing a skirt or a frock. Bel
  3. Ayupmeducks. I am aware of the law in the US where if you are behind a school bus that has its red light flashing, you have to stop, and I hear what you say about stopping for a school bus on the opposite side of the road. What I do not understand is; do you have to stop for a school bus on the opposite side of the road if there is a centre reservation (median) down the centre of the road? Also, is this law a federal law or does it differ for different states? PS below. Thanks Ayupmeduck for swift response.
  4. Policemen on point duty. Cartons and jar labels with the price printed on. Conductors on the trams (they are gone now). Metal advertising signs. Product names stuck on shop windows in individual letters (Cadbury, for example) Ex-army servicemen wearing/using khaki items for work. Built-up shoes for people with a short leg. RUNNING IN PLEASE PASS notice in car rear windows. Sun blinds pulled down over shop windows. Hassle-free passage through airports. Curtains drawn at house when someone had died. Piece of black cloth stitched on to sleeve of bereaved men. Spectacle lens of frosted
  5. The Merlin Flying Club has relocated to Tatenhill airfield in Staffordshire. Rolls-Royce remains, but reduced in size, and the rest of the old hangars and buildings from WW1 are still owned by a haulage company.
  6. They might not make them there anymore, Loppylugs. The bat I have says that it was made for the U S Army, so is probably a wartime one. It was found in the first house that we occupied after getting married.
  7. I've not been to Athens, Georgia, Loppylugs, but my baseball bat has. I know, I know, it's nothing to do with musical instruments!
  8. Ey-up Catfan, what about this, then? Isn't it what we have been telling 'em for ages?
  9. A few points about the topics above. P1B XA856 had its ventral fuel tank drop off the aircraft as it was coming into land on 3.3.61. The tank landed in the front garden of a house without causing any injuries. Apart from this aircraft awaiting a new tank, none of Hucknall's Lightnings ever flew without one fitted. Javelin XA562 landed at Hucknall on 28.2.62 with one undercarriage leg not lowered. It landed safely before veering off the runway. Very little damage done. Hunter WT574, and other Hucknall Hunters, was engaged on investigating the problem of engine surge when the guns were fired.
  10. Agreed carni, is a lovely hymn. Here is a lovely rendition,
  11. #61. Story of my life - a woman with a headache!
  12. In 1943 a film unit visited most of the Rolls-Royce factories and filmed footage to be later used in a documentary film. Many still photographs were taken at the same time, and the photo, and the one below, were two of them. The control cabins were in the side walls with a large glass viewing window positioned just ahead of the engine's propeller. I have a photo some where of the control desk, but cannot find it. There were no windows in the test cells. The ends were open to the sky. Air came down the front opening and passed through louvres that turned the air 90 degrees to feed the propel
  13. Firbeck. The four buildings at the Balloon Woods test-site each had two test cells. The dividing wall had the control cabin with windows looking out into the cells. The picture below was taken in one of the cells and shows that a normal-size propeller was used for testing. I went in one of the cells a few years ago and looked out of the window of one of the control cabins. On the cell floor you can see where the girders of the test-stand structure had bee cut off at ground level. Also, at either end of the cells were louvres to direct air into and out of the cells. Where these had chattere
  14. I bet the police just love tattoos - far better for identification that DNA.
  15. Good point, Bubblewrap. Memory tells me that at the time the maps went on sale, they were said to be 1920s. The maps do not give a date but maybe the Evening Post mentioned it. Steven. The stations are shown as Midland Railway Station - G N Railway (Low Level) and L & N W R Station. Above them is London Road (High Level) Station.
  16. As mentioned in the posting of the Bell's map of Nottingham; here is a close-up of the central area showing the Victoria Station still being referred to by its old name. This is the only map of Nottingham I have seen with the old station name on it. Bearing in mind that it had the original name for a very short period, is this map unique, or were there others?
  17. Nottingham Falcons - what sport do they play - what league are they in? Have they won any games yet!!
  18. carnie, what are trying to do now? If you want to make the images larger in size, then look at my posting #1 in Posting Images - instructions 9 to 13.
  19. #1. Where is that snake trying to wriggle into? Actually, expanding the image and looking closely, I think it might be some kind of stocking, or transfers that is covering her body. There is an extended edging around the outer lines.
  20. Yes, making one image with four pictures on, and then putting it into Photobucket will work fine. Not sure, but think they might have to be jpegs.
  21. carni. Space is not a premium because your images are not stored on the Nottstalgia website, they are stored in Photobucket's enormous storage facility. I have 63 images in my Photobucket library, all of which are size 700 or more. It tells me that I have used only 1% of my allotment. Although you see them when you look at your messages, it is the open link to Photobucket that is putting them there. Now, if you scan your image and add it to your message via means other than Photobucket or the other similar programmes, then the image cannot be larger that 50Kb, or so I understand. CT will know
  22. In the Drag and Drop space in Photobucket there is a little wheel in the top right corner. Click on this to give all your pics the same size - choose the size from the list - I use the 800 x size, and it stays that size until you alter it. As for placing them side-by-side, even I don't know how to do that. Can't see a reason to do that - it means that the images will have to be small, as per your pub photo. I would keep them all shown one after the other at a big size.
  23. Balloon Woods. Up until World War Two, Rolls-Royce always repaired its aero-engines at its Derby Factory. With the outbreak of the war and the great expansion of production and development facilities, there was not enough room at Derby for expansion - the factory was surrounded by houses. A new site was required for engine repairs and a number of factories in Nottingham were taken over. The main factory was Hollins Mill on Garden Street, Radford (also known as Radford Mill). There were satellite factories at the top of Nottingham Road, New Basford, where now is the Genogli (sp) college, and on
  24. I totally agree, Andy. It would be interesting to put a stop-watch on, say, Rooney, and see how long he has the ball at his feet. I very much doubt that in the ninety minutes it would exceed one minute. He might score, or he might pass it to someone who does score, but usually nothing happens while he has it. And for this he is paid over £200,000 for that minute, if there is only one match that week. Of course, he might not play the ninety minutes. 95% income tax should be levied on such limited-talent, useless-at-anything-else, egotistic nobodies. As usual, the problem really lies with t
  25. To get two programmes on the screen together, do this. Go into Photobucket, click on Library, click on the image you want to use in your message, click on the IMG box. Now. look at the top right corner of the screen and you will see two superimposed squares next to the X in the red box. Click on this and the screen will shrink. Then, go into Explorer - or whichever is your search engine - and click on Nottstalgia (or type it in if you do not have it saved as an address). When it comes on screen it will fill the screen. As before, click on the little square top right, and it will shrink like t
