  1. It’s unlikely anyone from Bulwell would be at Mellish. Although located in the City, Mellish was a County grammar school. Someone from Bulwell would go to a City grammar school like High Pavement.
  2. ‘Nowt so queer as folk’ so they say!
  3. The guy at the Ropewalk was probably Pendlebury. He was the head honcho there when he was not working at his private practice on Park Terrace.
  4. And that's before you start on your 'meals on wheels' round.
  5. My dentist, Malcolm Pendlebury, on seeing my wisdom teeth for the first time said 'nasty things, wisdom teeth, better out than in' and proceeded to hook them out with a winkle pin type device. That was when I was about 22 and he was fresh out of dental college. He did my work for many years until he died. My mouth is a tribute to his technology. Caps. bridges, gold inserts. He was a great one for technology. He was also my first flying instructor. My mouth will be very valuable to my executors when I die! He had a splendid funeral in St. Marys Church with a reception at the Council House. He c
  6. I knew Bulwell Common well. It was on the Mellish cross country course. Up Kersall Drive, down St. Albans, over the common, down Hucknall Rd. to the bridge, along the footpath parallel to the railway, under the bridge, along Bestwood Rd. up St. Albans, down Piccadilly, along Jesmond Rd. Kersall Drive and back home. The longer senior course entailed going under that Hucknall Rd. Bridge, round the then farmland, back under the bridge and onto the common as before. Done that so many times. We also used the tennis courts by the clubhouse in the sixth from.
  7. Can’t see you coming down Beacon Hill Road on that somehow!
  8. I’ve not had any alcohol since 1st. January. To be honest I don’t miss it one bit and I’ve lost some weight. I’ve had my fair share over the years but at least I’ve proved I don’t have an addiction!
  9. Welcome back Rog. You’ve been missed. I always practice defensive driving these days. I want a quiet, hassle free life with no excitement whatsoever.
  10. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. Too pig headed to listen to anyone else these days.
  11. I doubt they can teach me anything about driving.
  12. I don't want to appear self righteous but I don't do any of those things. I'm a bit of a petrolhead and enjoy driving. I believe when you're behind the wheel you should give maximum attention to what's around you. I recently took a theory test test online and passed 100%. I've only recently given up doing track days at Cadwell Park as it was getting more difficult to get in and out of my Lotus. There's an enormous cill to climb over! I treat driving as an art and give it my full attention at all times. I keep thinking about doing the advanced motoring test but I think I would end up disagreein
  13. Suggested passing distance is 1.5 metres which I always observe. No point in trying to antagonise them. It’s always deemed to be the motorist’s fault if there is an accident.
  14. These are the sort of cyclists I complain about. Not the solitary ones riding to the shops or going about their business. It's those who ride in packs with total disregard for others. Obviously in a pack they have safety in numbers and feel free to dish out abuse to other road users. I have to pay for a licence to drive, exhibit number plates and must carry insurance. I'm identifiable, they're not. That can't be fair on todays congested roads
  15. Not ignorant about cyclists at all. I quite understand why they wear their strange apparel. I just don’t like the way they ride round the lanes in packs, disregarding the Highway Code and showing discourtesy to other road users. This is a fairly recent phenomenon. It would be better if they rode round dedicated stadiums and kept off the roads. Time trials on the pubic highway should definitely be outlawed.
  16. Leathers I can see the safety reason for. Lycra is a form of display.
  17. I've done the Great Notts Bike Ride 50 mile run many times. Not for a few years mind you. Back in those days very few people wore clown suits to ride a bike. I think there is some subversive sexual reason for cycle clothing.
  18. That seems to be typical of cyclists. Bradley Wiggins syndrome! Why do people want to get dressed up like a trapeze artist to ride a bicycle?
  19. Lots of cyclists around here especially at weekends. Completely arrogant. No regard for other road users at all.
  20. I seldom use my Harrison lathe and all the other workshop kit I acquired over the years. My son was, at one time, interested in agricultural engineering and spent a lot of time in the workshop turning and welding. He ultimately became a lawyer but you should see his own home workshop now. I drool over it - always good to have other interests away from the job!
  21. The only comment from the examiner after I passed my test was that I drove a little too slowly. Nobody can say that now!
  22. Absolutely stuffed full of safety aids, mainly to protect the occupants, but the abs braking systems have made an enormous difference to stopping distances. I think the biggest problem is that driving standards have not kept pace with car development and drivers seem to exhibit less competence and certainly less tollerance.
  23. I fully realise that but I always drive at The National Speed Limit whenever it's safe to do so. I don't want to be the one holding other people up and causing unnecessary dangerous overtaking manoeuvres. If anyone overtakes me when I'm doing the NSL then that's up to them.
  24. Thanks Pianoman, that's the place. Probably not that far from P.P's. Well worth a visit. The guy was very knowledgeable. Must be over 15 years since I last visited. I did have a suitable single phase motor in stock - I can't remember why, so It only cost me a few bits from R.S. Components to do the conversion. I remember I turned off the main road where someone had a large collection of Trabant cars in a field. I don't know if they're still there. Edit: just checked. The planners made him move them. That was around 2008.
