Tongue in cheek comes to mind here

    Rog

Unfortunately, ‘tongue in cheek’ and ‘banter‘ sometimes (but not always) can hide real prejudice.
Someone can say something hurtful or  even objectionable then, when challenged, innocently say ‘But it’s only banter’ or ‘ I was speaking with ‘tongue in cheek’

Also, Obesity and tattoos are totally different things.
I think the most important consideration is a person’s  character and their attitude and consideration towards other people.

The lady in your pharmacy, Rog, did seem uncaring and rude though.

But,  (dare I say) she may be suffering from big problems in her life that no-one else  knows about?  This isn’t an excuse - just a thought……

  2. Reading all the posts about problems with GP surgeries, I feel very fortunate

here in a fen village as I just send them a message on ‘Askmygp’ stating any health isssues we may have, and they phone up the same days to

assess whether we need a face to face appt or not.

The nurses at the surgery do annual blood tests (and BP) for us and the doctors follow up any abnormalities.

We really are very fortunate ….

  3. @mary1947  I’m surprised that you can’t get your ears syringed for free at the GP surgery.  It must just be a local decision as we can get ours done at no cost - the nurse does standard syringing and if there is a problem eg previous perforated eardrum, then you get an appt at an NHS clinic to have it suctioned out.

@Jill Sparrow. I have never had nits neither have our children - just luck I suppose….

  4. Paul and I went to see one of the whales (there were 3 according to the ‘whale thread’  that CT posted - Hercules, Goliath and Jonah). It was in Leicester and I think we had at least one of our children with us so it must have been in the late 60s/early 70s.

  5. Col, Perhaps it would have been better to forget about the swimming until your body had got used to the new meds?

But I know  you like pushing yourself a bit!!!  Hope the symptoms/side effects will settle down now.

Poor  Grace - has she got a full (bent) arm plaster cast on with an arm sling?

  6. I understand woke as being alert to injustice in whatever form it takes, and wanting to put it right.  This may be attempted by our actions or words, but woke is actually internal - something you FEEL.

I realise this is an oversimplification ….

  7.  Col, that was an interesting read.  I never knew that it was Prigozhin who, as head of the ‘Internet Research Agency’ worked hard to get Trump elected in 2016!  Or maybe that’s not accurate - with all the conflicting statements we can read,, it’s getting more and more like in the book ‘1984’.
I expect we’ll soon be told we are at war with the US and friends with Russia!!!! (and that this has always been so)

  8. 1966.

Cost of our 3 bedroom end of terrace with lovely big garden £2800

    Mortgage rate 4% (I think)

I think it was only the husband’s salary that was taken into consideration in those days, certainly in our case.

I feel it was when a second person’s salary was also considered that people could afford to borrow more, causing house prices to increase quite a bit.  Perhaps building companies and estate agents thought

‘If people can afford to borrow that much then we can raise the prices of the houses’

Or am I oversimplifying this?  It was just a thought ….
