  2. Mansfield Shoe Co. as we know it-began on Dallas street in 1900. Royce & Gascoine...the originators of the company saw a huge market in ladies shoes as well as boots. By 1908 Mansfield had 4 factories and producing over a million pairs a year and distributed worldwide, markets changed and in 1935 became the founder of the Norvic Company. Things improved decade by decade..providing hard but steady employment for Mansfield folk, and then became the Mansfield Shoe Group...with sites in Bristol,Doncaster and Ayrshire and sold 50.000 pairs a week. The fortunes changed

  6. Towns and areas never did recover from the closure of those industries Oz. Whilst yuppies thrived down south...Tebbett encouraged bike riding. Enterprise Allowance Schemes did'nt cut the mustard and places like Kirkby, Sutton,Mansfield became mental male graveyards..blokes in the bookies or tending allotments 'til the giro dropped. I worked for Monks,Metal Box, Mandora . The bus station is nice though.
  7. I love the place..went to College there.. Syd Booths records in the Four Seasons. The Wakefields had an Army and Navy surplus room upstairs..fantastic jackets...way before Sting adorned them! All the food outlets have big cleanliness posters on the door. And posters everywhere of trouble causers /with a freephone number to ring the Police to remove said undesirables from the town. Stephen Ford would have been proud of me- used to sneak in the bus sheds most lunchtimes on Chesterfield Rd.South.
  8. Peverils post was interesting...wonder if he was a sabotouer? Sometimes on a job i mix sawdust with woodglue to conceal screws..mostly exterior and high. Crushed brick dust and gobbo - gives a tidy finish- bit of white spirit in gloss..called 'speed'- gloss and undercoat mix...a friday house they were known as.
  9. Correct Mary...it was what we called a 'Bat 'Round'..took it in turns to drive. The driver would be on soft drinks all night. 5 in my Alpha..and off to the Staff of Life as well. Never drink & drove...
  10. I have to agree Mercury..when over in the spring...a visit is on the cards. Since living in town as a kid-those lovely smells coming from Indian and Jamaican kitchens...of course the mums were only too glad to give you a bowl of something. Thinking back..those ladies were probaly lonely..miles from home and not getting many smiles from neighbours.
  11. The caption below does all these things. Things you don't see... The 1970's... Companies Gone... Where did you Work... And girl power..the anniversary of Votes for Women ( some.) Also today- Happy Mothers Day.
  12. Shame that Mary..used to start at the Yew and end up in The Badger Box.

  15. Yes Peveril it was opened in August 1959. By coincidence the land of Bilborough or Billa was originally owned by William 'Peveral'.
  16. Certainly recall humming this. He had a hit previously with ex RAF mates "Good News Week". I don't remember hearing that as a child. These type of songs..stuck with me from when i was very young "Doggy in the window" would be another. Songs like "Paper Roses" and "knock 3 Times" were kid memories. Anyway a fine song which hopefully brings back a time and place memory.
  17. Living almost opposite Marshalls yard was brilliant the yard man knew i came in for a nose...and often scrounged a lift of a trunker. They did a night run to old Swan i think in Liverpool..imagine that today..mind you i was picked up outside the lido in case the gateman was watching. I was right up the top of the A66 one time..a red unit and a 40 ft stopped..a lift to my doorstep. Great memories of Moorbridge.
  18. And tut' wine bar - which was called ... The wine Bar. A haunt for a certain feline ex bus driver!
  19. This was an offy that was cut into rock. The elderly owner insisted on only selling us Rawlings minerals. Had gas lamps as well! More evidence of raised dwellings on this road( to take in the incline ) up to Forest Rd.
  20. Thats right phil..near the top the car dealer with bi-folding doors and petrol pumps at one time. Nearby was a 3 storey 19th century mill type building.
  21. Yew Tree.Half moon.Bedstead? Then nearer to moorbridge forest hotel.Apollo. The oak in Hucknall was dire. The Red Lion also.
  22. Watching my mother with the 'forbidden' gas poker..and thinking where is Cambodia? This particular song would come out the radio. Not heard it for a long time.
  23. Spent some happy days at moorbridge.. Tadpoleing when young and chasing a gorgeous gypsy girl called Shelagh. When she found out i was fairground stock..all was good. Stroll up to the swingers ( forest hotel ) For lemonade and crisps. Often the camp elders would flog homemade pegs or the like. As a youth i pumped petrol at the shell garage at Moorbridge..spent most of my pay on 8 track cassettes.
