  1. Gorse Hill garage used to sell Howard rotovators. My uncle bought one for his smallholding. I still have it in working condition at the back of my garage. Chick Wheelhouse also had it. I remember having a test drive in a Lotus there. Its now some sort of minimart with a car wash.
  2. I was saddened to here of the demise of chick wheelhouse I worked for him in 1975 one of the best You never knew what you were working on next from rollers to American motors The pitch was a absolute gold mine I still recall Pete his salesman playing endless tapes of the drifters Saturday night at the movies I came to him from one of the coop retail garages and chick said he thought they would wipe out the motor trade in Nottingham He couldn't believe it when I told him about the numptys who used to run it I can still hear his most used phrase when you found any problems on one of his motor
  3. No, I worked with Ben junior at Hubbart Durose and Pain, Chartered Accountants. He's back in the UK now and lives in the Home Counties. I also knew Chick Wheelhouse quite well from when I used to stop for fuel on Mapperley Plains, then at Gorse Hill, where he had Lotus, on Lortas Road at Basford, where there was a large underground storage area and at his final place on Nuthall Road. I saw him a few years ago but now he's no longer with us.
  4. Ben senior used to gather his shooting party at the garage I think a young Chick Wheelhouse was one of them - resplendent in plus4s and Labradors, on his return he used to hang his hares and pheasants in the stores. Young Ben I liked, nice to know where he went. His sister was nice too Penny? Did you work at the garage?
  5. Chick Wheelhouse died last year...he retired from the car trade a few years ago when Hlafords made an offer that he and his osn couldn`t refuse..
  6. wheelhouse moved to Nuthall rd but I don't think he did any good there the site is now Halfords
  7. Yes, that's weird, after getting my Sytners and Wheelhouse mixed up at Mapperely, wasn't there a Wheelhouse on that Nuthall Rd site at some time?
  8. # 373 I'm glad you said that Wheelhouse was near the Tree Tops Rob because that's what I thought, but was also wondering if I was getting mixed up with Speeds, the Volvo dealer.
  9. can you remember gorse hill garage now a mini market it was run by two brothers who constantly argued and somewhere in between there and wheelhouse the maggot farm The chap who ran it had an old ex wd Hillman pick up and it was alive all over the floor and everywhere they refused to look at it because of the stench years ago I had a similar experience with a Bedford doormobile they sometimes sheared the steering column gear lever off usual procedure was to clamp a pair of mole grips on the column and drive it back I jumped in to be met with an horrendous stink you could not get a breath
  10. #373 Thanks Rob, I think I may have been confusing Wheelhouse with Goulders Lancia.
  11. I remember Wheelhouse being on Mapperley Plains near the Tree Tops pub, opposite Gedling Miners Welfare. That is now "executive housing" after changing hands a few times as a car sales plot. Sytner were closer to town, between the reservoir and Woodthorpe Drive, and backing onto the old brickyard. Gouldings moved in there after Sytner moved to Huntingdon Street. The building is currently World of Mowers, but there were plans recently to turn it into a fast-food drive-in
  12. I seem to remember Wheelhouse was on the same site as the Sytner showroom, which one was first?
  13. point taken giga but not being blessed with your god given wisdom I mistakenly assumed that Rolls Royce would have been more than capable of fitting an adequate braking system it was not until one reached around 30mph that the horrendous weight overcame the heath robinson contraption intended to help stop the car As to the road I think it was called Wembley rd or avenue where I did most of the tests as it was quiet and not wishing to be picking motorists out of the boot The road was level then ascended at the end I also recall wheelhouse buying a Rolls Royce Corniche convertible in the 70
  14. when I worked for chick Wheelhouse on plains road I had to do an MOT on an old Rolls Royce it had rod operated brakes All we had then was the old throw meter to test the brakes I set off and turned left into Arnold road I started to apply the brakes only to find little if any retardation by now I had both feet on the brake pedal and was gaining speed rapidly heading down to Arnold with thoughts of carnage going through my head out of the corner of my eye I saw a road on my right going slightly uphill I began winding furiously at the wheel expecting a roll over all I could see was the silv
  15. I would love to see a picture of Wheelhouse garage on Mapperly plains all housing now as is Speeds garage they were the Volvo agents another really old one was Ristes on forest road They were Rolls and Bently I think they are still trading on gamble street Meeowed
  16. when we worked at Hollbrookes ray do you recall that enormous Alfa Romeo that he got hold off it had two spare wheels on the back it was like sitting on top of a double decker bus When he came up from town it sounded like a spitfire coming it took half the garage up at night when we fetched it in I was watching some vintage car rally on tv some years ago Talk about a small world up comes the bloke I worked for in oz driving the identical car On e bay the other day was a cotal gearbox like the one you did on that Delahaye they wanted $3000 just for the box when we were at Blue Star I saw
  17. can you recall the boyfriend of Peggy he used to collect all the scrap batteries and exhausts at Blue Star she once put a hole in his head with a stiletto heel he was irish and a real bruiser he had all of his facial features but as Eric Morecambe would say not necessarily in the correct order when I was at Wheelhouse he came in he didn't recognise me but I remembered him I took him out in a Buick convertible and he said Wheelhouse isn't the only bloke with money he pulled out a wad of notes and said there is £10000 there in another pocket he another £10000 I said strewth what do you do
  18. thanks for you kind response I think I did work with pat when the Coop moved to abbey bridge and I believe he worked for Wheelhouse shortly before me a good mechanic but the Coop involvement in the motor trade was coming to an inevitable end it really was chaos Perhaps he remembers hurtling round the workshop on a go kart it was just normal then the reception manager came upstairs to the workshop seeing the place covered in dense smoke and this go kart roaring round He just shrugged his shoulders turned around and went back down in total despair meeowed
  19. When I worked at the Coop Ray I got caught by ken hicks with a girl I was seeing while on road test he said your gone this time so I said fair enough and I was glad he didn't give me a rollicking in front of her Oh he said I wasn't bothered who you had got in the car He said do you know who the car belonged to only the chairman of the Coop and he has been going mental in the showroom demanding to know where his car was for the last hour I went to wheelhouse he offered me to start the following week on the Friday I was due to leave the area manager came down a man called Bates needless
  20. hi everyone I worked in 1955 at Holbrookes garage on Wollaton street next door was a blacksmith who used to make new leafs for road springs he was called Frank really grumpy chap I recall then at Blue star garage at the junction of Alferton road and Radford boulervard famous for its battery sales then the coop at chapel bar on the end of coop house and then to Wheelhouse on mapperly plains best job I ever had driving cars that Clarkson would die for Blue star garages were numerous in the fifties they had adverts on Tv am an old man now and if I lift the bonnet on my car now I don't recognise
