Cliff Ton 10,470
I'm sure this shop also specialised in selling stamps, albums etc. for collectors; displays of stamps from around the world featured in one of the shop's windows. I remember the stamp shop. Went in there a few times when I were a lad.
jackson 301
Thanks for the photograph Cliff Ton, I can see now that there were 2 shops; sweets and stamps figured strongly in my memory - regarding the lower area of Wollaton Street. PS: can still experience the smell of the light, sweet aroma of 'Peart's Bakeries' as I passed by its open door.
poohbear 1,360
The sweet shop I remember buying my fudge at was where the chippy is here.It was only a small shop and probably the one incorporated into the main building. This picture is 1980...I'm going back to the late fifties. jackson 301
Poohbear, being a fan of fudge myself, what was so special about Watmough's? PS: can't remember a sweet shop being here.
poohbear 1,360
Nothing special about Watmoughs...the lollipop man as he was known in the trade. They had about three shops in Nottingham in the fifties. They made boiled sweets but nothing outstanding.Unlike other local manufacturers they had retail shops. The fudge I bought was Meltis....one of the best at the time. The Thorntons of their day. katyjay 5,091
Wasn't there Meltis Fruits as well? Kind of jelly outside, runny centre? I hate soft centres in chocolates, fruits, even the Fry's bars [mint or fruit]. So would never eat the Meltis fruits, but I think they were a 'nice' present to give someone. tazraz7 5
Watmoughs sweet factory was on Paddock street between Woolworths on Lister gate and Maid Marion way i was a driver for them in in 1966 , they also had a shop on Parliament st and one at the side of the Theatre Royal i remember that one because an arsehole of a traffic warden gave me a ticket when i was unloading there one day, it was my first driving job an everything went well till i blew the engine up on a Thames Trader van when returning back from Northamptonshire the cylinder head gasket had gone and i filled up an whole lot of empty lollipop jars with water to get home with and old man Watmough sacked me for it, they moved to Abbey Bridge when the Broadmarsh centre was planned and the factory was demolished ps i also broke down in leeds on one trip and had my girlfriend with me at the time so we had to spend the night together and thats when my son was made lol, while we was in leeds we visited the picture house there to see THE FAMILY WAY with Haley Mills and Hywell Bennet and the Rolling Stones were singing lets spend the night together on the juke box in a pub there, great days the 1960s
Trevor S 2,003
Poohbear...re #28. Unless I am having a senior moment, that chippy, just up from the Gaumont (Hippodrome) was there in the late 50s at least. The owner was a fellow called Chris and he and my father used to go fishing together - used to get fish and chips from there every time we (parents and I) went to the pictures or was in town late for one reason or another. Distinctly remember being in there with Dad one night when 2 drunks started arguing and wiping the vinegar and other things off the counter. Chris got a pan of boiling fat and came around the counter and threatened to throw it on them if they didn't get out. The drunks took off and he even followed them out on the street. As you look at the photo (#28), the far door was the entry to the chippy and the line of sight through that door would be looking at the counter of which the fryers were behind against the wall. Knew the place well as we always seemed to be there BUT, I could be wrong.
poohbear 1,360
Who knows what has been altered over the years... Just before the chippie or just past the chippy ...who knows now. I don't remember the chippy personally probably because I never used it but that sweet shop and the stamp shop down the road are fixed in my memory. A quarter of fudge and gazing longingly at the stamps in that shop tend to get remembered. I'm sure we're both right....just maybe a few years apart.
DAVIDW 1,684
We always knew the chippie as the Hippodrome Snackery . There was more here towards the bottom of the page and pictures of the shops facing : http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=294&hl=hippodrome%20snakery&page=
poohbear 1,360
I think that was nearer the Gaumont and the stamp shop. The shops I refer to are nearly at the junction of the walkway that ran down the side of the Co-op
Chulla 4,946
Picking up this old thread. Wasn't it the chippy just before you got to the Hippodrome/Gaumont that had a couple of small mirrors on the outside wall - one convex, the other concave, that distorted your image? Memories of the No.1 bus; I have one that is not very nice. Going back to Crane school after going home for dinner, I was just past the terminus when a bus just arriving up the hill ran over a dog. The front wheel made the dog yelp, the back wheel split it open from end to end and all its insides fell out. Not a pretty sight.
