purplecaz 0
Does anyone have any pictures of the old BHS on Listergate? My grandma worked there in the 40-50s, Thanks Carolyn
Cliff Ton 10,479
Carolyn, go to this site and in the "Search" box put Lister Gate http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/index.php You'll get quite a few from various angles along the road

Bubblewrap 3,815
Thanks, I can't quite figure out which shop was BHS, was it near the woolworths? Opposite side of the road.
Cliff Ton 10,479
Good point! It's not obvious unless you know where to look in the first place, or are old enough to remember it. Here's a few clues, so you can identify the others yourself.
poohbear 1,360
I thought it was same side.... Edit...And the same minute you proved me correct Cliff ton.....Timing!!
Cliff Ton 10,479
Great minds etc etc.....! The main store on the opposite side of the road to all of that lot was C & A.
mick2me 3,033
Welcome Purplecaz. What is that van in the bottom picture? It has a wheel on the back, measuring wheel? GPO van?
Cliff Ton 10,479
I've tweaked it....it's Nottingham City Transport
Paulus 541
Welcome Purplecaz. What is that van in the bottom picture? It has a wheel on the back, measuring wheel? GPO van? Nottingham City Transport vehicle Mick, no idea what it would have been doing, perhaps something to do with tram lines?
Bubblewrap 3,815
Opposite side of the road. Who am I confusing BHS with then? What was on the opposite side of Lister Gate to Woolies/BHS ?
purplecaz 0
Wonderful, thanks for your help, i'd seen the pictures but I couldn't quite read the shop fronts - I can have a better look now :-)

Bubblewrap 3,815
Nottingham City Transport vehicle Mick, no idea what it would have been doing, perhaps something to do with tram lines? Could it have been measuring the mileage of a new bus route?
mick2me 3,033
Or length of cable required to install trolleybus wires?
purplecaz 0
Would this building still exist? It would be next to the current M&S homeware store I presume.
Cliff Ton 10,479
Difficult to show because Streetview don't go down Lister Gate. This is the closest you can get http://binged.it/YX80yM On the right of the image there's an old building with two triangular pediments; BHS is/was the one to the left of that. And this is what it looks like today - New Look, a fashion store
MELTONSTILTON 452
Looking at the Bing aerial images, one thing does surprise me, it is the amount of trees in Nottingham
Cliff Ton 10,479
I can see what you mean..........but I don't think I've ever really noticed them! Maybe just take them for granted. Certainly don't feel like you're walking through leafy green area when you're on those streets.
purplecaz 0
Thanks, the trees certainly block the view - I had assumed the building was long gone so I'm glad to see it is still there :-)
alisoncc 379
Very interested in this photo. Used to catch a 43 Trolley bus on a regular basis. Between Canal Street and Listergate on the left of Carrington Street was a boarded up area then known as the "Arms Houses". I think this photo shows the top end of it. Recollect sitting on an Uncle's shoulders watching an army parade up Carrington Street standing in front of the boarded up area. I believe the parade was that of the Sherwood Foresters returning from WWII - mid-late forties. I was ever so little then. There was also a short-cut that went between, what later became Woolworth's, and Castlegate known as "bombed buildings". Weren't supposed to take the short-cut as there were cellars underneath some of the buildings that hadn't collapsed in the bombing. But if we were running late for Sunday school??? Still got a scar on my knee from broken glass after falling over traversing the "bombed buildings".
alisoncc 379
I think that should be "Alms" Houses not Arms. Most of these forums normally allow you to edit your contributions, but there seems to be a time limit on doing so here. C'est la vie.

I think what you are referring to was the Able Collins Alms Houses. Take a look at this thread for a few photos. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10206&hl=collins+alms
