Well,I got back in to the forum today after being locked out AGAIN from the 13th of this month.
Mick, after much investigation and searching my troubleshooter came back with the same result as last time. There is a fault with the server of Nottstalgia.
I know you said all was ok that end but a bit more investigation would be appreciated.

I remember a short time ago when I was on another forum with the same format that we had a similar problem. This was fixed when the forum changed to a different server.

I am reasonably knowedgeable on these things Baz. Can you explain what you mean by being "locked out". Can you access the forum for instance but not login? Or what?

I run a Linux webserver in my lounge which supports a low-traffic forum not dissimilar to this one. So might be able to help.

Hi Alison.

I can not access the forum at all sometimes.

At other times I might be on the forum but it just freezes me out.

The last time was 13th September and I could not sign out but I noticed when I got back access today that I was actually signed out.

Gremlins ???? :-)

As mentioned a few weeks ago , I went about a week without being able to access Nottstalgia . No other site was affected .

Something somewhere didn't like my IP address (which is a number assigned by your own internet provider to your computer) .

Answer was to switch off the router at the mains . When you switch on again you are assigned a new IP number .

Worked straight away .

Normally my router is never switched off .

I have noticed that it's impossible for me to put on pictures and You tube videos like I used to, all we (I) get now is just a link to the source.

Beefsteak , I now find that to make Youtube videos embed on the page I have to press the "share" button below the video and copy and paste the link they give you . The link is usually highlighted in blue when it first pops up .

Don't have any problems with still pictures as long as I use the "image" box from the reply menu box to post them . (middle of the bottom line for others , looks like a TV screen . )

Have to make sure that the link to the image ends in .jpg

I've posted thousands of images and videos over the years via photo bucket and more recently Flickr with no problems , now all I get is a line of code, the image does appear , but the viewer has to click on them instead of them just appearing as they should.

EG

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/beefsteak44/9531306181/" title="Red Bull Mitchell by Beefsteak44, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7432/9531306181_9e7486ed66_o.jpg" width="3314" height="2212" alt="Red Bull Mitchell"></a>

If I try the little square I get a message saying I don't have permission to use that image extension on this community !!

Same with Youtube.

I need more information about the server fault.

There is one possibility that your IP address is on our ban list for some reason?

I dont have time today as am very busy but I will look at our IP ban list and compare yours.

Did you try accessing via a proxy server?

Beef,

Flickr have changed the way you embed photos .Going to your first flickr link

http://www.flickr.com/photos/beefsteak44/9531306181/

right click on the image .

A choice of sizes should come up eg medium500 etc .

Click on the size you want , when that image pops up , right click and select the "copy image url"

Paste that link into the Nottstalgia image box in the reply .

Just been locked out for a couple of hours. I was able to access the forum via a Proxy which shows it wasn't down. Indications here were that the site wasn't responding to queries from my IP address. Couldn't log in via the Proxy - javascript disabled, but could read messages. The site does need a contact form for non-members to contact the mods, as I was briefly. Could access other UK based sites so it wasn't the link that was down.

The youtube link you posted still isn't the right one .

This is the one from the address bar at the top of the page and it doesn't embed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8-GC_vkAKw

If you press the "share" icon below the video , the link is

http://youtu.be/ (and then the suffix number ) same as the above link .

note the full stop in the middle and the lack of the www bit . I don't understand what the difference is but that is the only way it works for me .

Meanwhile back on the Nottstalgia difficulties, this isn't a problem I've ever experienced so I can't really offer any help or explanations.

When you say "locked out" are you just not able to log in? Until you accessed it via the Proxy, can you get the site or see it at all? So you effectively become a "Guest" for a while.

The site does need a contact form for non-members to contact the mods, as I was briefly.

I believe there is at least one forum (although I'm not sure which one) where a Guest can post messages, which might be your emergency get-out route.

As the problem seems to affect only a few people occasionally, the blocked IP address seems a good bet for an explanation.

When attempting to access nottstalgia.com my browser indicated it had timed out with no response. If the host is running Linux and Apache, then the .htaccess file in the home directory is blocking my access by IP number. This is most probably what is happening. I have a number of utilities on my Linux server that block IP's based on the number of attempted logons. Fail2ban is one such. If it is not set up correctly then it can ban a whole range of IP addresses rather than a single one.

Fail2ban operates by monitoring log files (e.g. /var/log/pwdfail, /var/log/auth.log, etc.) for selected entries and running scripts based on them. Most commonly this is used to block selected IP addresses that may belong to hosts that are trying to breach the system's security. It can ban any host IP that makes too many login attempts or performs any other unwanted action within a time frame defined by the administrator.

The nottstalgia webserver was ignoring my wget queries, and my browser was timimg out with no access. Which is exactly what happens when the .htaccess file in the home directory has my IP address or a range of addresses that include mine using the allow/deny operative.

PS I could access the site via proxy. So it wasn't down nor was the link down

ERM Cliff, sarcasm ain't your best virtue, because my inability to post photos on here when I can still post the old way on other sites IS to be considered a Nottstalgia problem!

Just a suggestion, for contact use the FB Nottstalgia page, most of the mods and Mick are on it and they get notification of posts when they log in.http://www.facebook.com/Nottstalgia
