Well it definitely is woody at the bottom, and I'm sure that they are beechnuts to the right of the picture, which looks like rusty iron, and I bet you took the picture while out mushroom picking!!!

The odd angle is indeed chain links. Part of the chain that was attached to the former Connell chain ferry in Argyle.

Type of capstan? Timber was inserted into a slot then men turned it to moor a ship.

Couple of years ago, stayed in a B & B at Connel behind the Lobster Pot restruant overlooking the Falls of Lora. Beautiful .

It is indeed a capstan. Formerly used for pulling the herring boats up the shore at Sarclet in caithness. Here's the full picture. Note that the capstan post is buried under a landslip:
