Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Now that the chemotherapy has ended I am virtually back where I was before; being normal and not really aware of my cancer condition except for little things that

Right then Miducks. Today my Cardioligist has given me the news I didn't dare hope for. All of my tests results are good and I start reducing a lot of the Heart Meds over the next two weeks. Starting

My last report (page 31, post 770) had my PSA number down to 10.7. It had shot up to 61 before the horse pills (Enzalutamide) arrested its upward trend. Today I went for a routine visit to oncology at

i know bilboro lad but its a starting point to get people checked my first one rose slightly i reacted to second which was a larger rise diog nosis goes on other things regular checks are recomended even if first is all clear

Although what Bilbro-Lad is saying is mostly true - the PSA tests "can" be misleading, they can also be very useful in diagnosing prostate cancer at an early stage. I agree, that if you are "of an age", then it probably will not make much difference, but if you are in your 40's or 50's, it can become the cause of your demise - and it is NOT pleasant!

As such, the PSA tests should not be used as a "stand-alone" indicator or diagnostic, just another tool in the physicians bag.

I have narrowly dodged the cancer bullet once - colon cancer 11 years ago resulted in the loss of 8" of my large intestine. I do not intend going through that kind of surgery again, so I will accept the PSA testing. However, that does bring up another subject - Colonoscopies: Get one when you turn 50, or earlier if you have family history of colon cancer.

That depends on where it is located and how severe the cancer is if it is contained within the prostate and is a mild cancer thatmay be left because you would dye of old age before the cancer killed you but has in my brothers case his was very aggressive and on the verge of breaking out of the prostrate and had he not had a psa he would not have survived mine was more aggressive than first thought to not get checked is not a good idea you only get one chance in life there will be all sorts of tests before adiognosis is made you are given the resullts and the options appropriate to your diognosis it will be your choice ultimately but you are always better off checked it helps with finding other problems like if it has escaped out of the prostate please not mess about get tested.

TO LEAVE THINGS IS NEVER THE ANSWER I REPEAT A VERY LARGE PERCENTAGE OF MEN HAVE SOMEKIND OF PROSTATE PROBLEMS MAKE YOUR DECISIONSWHEN YOU GET RESULTS DO NOT MAKE THEM DECISIONS BEFOREGETTING TESTED AND IT IS NOT TRUE THAT IT IS NOT NECCASRY IF YOU ARE 60 OR OVER LIFE IS PRECIOS AND NO DOCTOR /SURGEON WILL OPERATE IF NOT NEEDED.

I had been suffering with cirrhosis for two years along with severe headaches. In February this year I suffered an Epileptic fit at home and had a stroke in the ambulance on the way to hospital followed by a second stroke in intensive care. At this point I think they started to take me serious regarding the headaches as it turns out when they gave me an MRI Scan they discovered I had a tumor called a Glyoma / Astrocytoma

My point is that as A Charlesworth says no matter how small or insignificant you may consider your symptoms are, be they lumps, skin lesions or pains in isolated areas for goodness sake get them looked at

Sorry to go on but its something you have to consider

One way to check your prostrate, is a physical examination, no pain, just a little bit of discomfort, for a couple of minutes.

I was diagnosed with renal cancer in 2004, 4 weeks later I had my left kidney removed, it was enveloped by a large tumor, the cancer went into remission. In 2009 5 small nodules were discovered, 2 on the bottom right lung and 3 on the right of my diaphragm, I was closely monitored for six months, one of the nodules grew large enough to do a biopsy,it turned out positive as renal cancer.

Then came two bouts of chemotherapy, and radiation treatment, and finally, surgery to remove the nodules, it was successful, no cancer.

Halfway through my treatment, my Urologist discovered I had a double hernia, that is going to be fixed next Thursday.

The reason I wrote this post is,I never knew anything was wrong with me, there was no pain or any sign that I had a huge tumor growing around my left kidney,I was doing all the normal every day things. So my humble advice to the male members who are getting to be old farts, get yersen checked out,I thought I was a healthy young man of 55.

Hey you men, get yourself checked out!

Some if you may cynical about the PSA blood test but for my husband it has been a lifesaver. He'd had a PSA about 4 years ago and the reading was OK. Then about 18 months ago our GP offered him another one and the reading had gone up quite dramatically. He was sent off to see a consultant and then have a biopsy. We'd rather not think about that though because he was the one in a hundred who ended up with septicaemia from the procedure!! There were 3 days that he can't remember at all following that episode.

Then followed 7.5 weeks of radiotherapy, every day, and 18 months of hormone therapy. All seems to be OK now and today he celebrated his 70th birthday!!

I must tell you that when he was first diagnosed last year he rang his brother in Canada to tell him. He had also had a PSA a few years ago which had been OK but he thought it best to get checked out again. The outcome was that he has also undergone radiotherapy this year. So that's two brothers who have never had any toilet problems, you know what I mean ....... needing a wee a few times in the night........, being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, thanks to the NHS blood test.

I'm now worried about my 2 sons who are in their 30's but the specialists say that at their age they are OK but when they get to their 50's they should get checked.

I'd been having minor problems with my bladder for years, the problems came on slowly and didn't cause much trouble. Early 2011 I watched a documentary by Bob Monkhouse regarding his terminal prostate cancer, as a result of this I went to the doctors. On hearing my symptoms he took blood for the PSA test and gave me a rectal examination. He gave me a strong hint that I had a tumour, and booked me a biopsy.

The biopsy was positive, and after an MRI scan I went to Aberdeen for a radical prostatectomy. The op took 5 1/2 hours because the tumour was on the verge of breaking out of the prostate capsule.

The point is, that if I had delayed a few weeks more, I would have had advanced prostate cancer with all the problems that entails. As it is I have to have PSA tests every 3 months and 6 monthly trips to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

On my trips to Aberdeen I always meet men who did not get tested in time, and think that there but for that Bob Monkhouse documentary go I.

Although the PSA test is not always reliable, it is still a good idea to have one every year, there is nothing to lose, and everything to gain. So come on guys get tested

Most men that have an ache or a pain, usually just ignore the pain and hope it will go away.It seems that most of the male members are in their mid 60's.That is a critical age for things to happen..

If you have an ache or pain that is prolonged,or keeps returning, I implore you to go get it checked out, if not for yourself, then do it for your family.

We have spent years taking care of growing families, now it's time to take care of our selves.I wish you all the best of health.

I went for the so called health MOT, gave a blood & stool sample, all OK except cholesterol a bit high, thought I'd be put on statins or something, but no. She said "as you've never smoked, got a physical job so exercise regularly, BMI normal, not heavy drinker, blood pressure OK, all you need to do is cut back on saturated fat." I asked about PSA test but she said "you don't need one."
